  1. Thing is Adam I've never seen an Astrocade branded console without the Astrocade cartridge bay cover (nor would I want one).

Other labeled "Astrovision"  labeled machines we've seen with all sorts of tops (mostly Computer System) but never an Astrocade.

My guess is it was swapped, but there's always a first time!

The 4 Astrocade branded consoles I own all have Astrocade matching top / bottom labels.

I know that this isn't the eBay forum but someone on here might want to get this Astrocade.  It is a very low serial number.  The seller claims it is tested.  Price isn't bad if it does work.

I can't see any serial # in that photo on my phone, what number is it?  It's too bad it doesn't have the original cover.

I just posted a link to AA on the FB discussion page, as things are kind of messy over there and I love AA so much more than FB.  Hopefully some new peeps will migrate over.  I find myself checking FB to see the latest iiRcade news and simply, I don't wanna, I dislike FB for the most part :)

Latest "controversy", Ninja Clowns came out.  And the people who are interested in more modern style games like Dead Effect or Riptide GP Renegade have just about had it with the lack of more modern 3d type games, and have used this as an example of the kind of release they DO NOT WANT.  lol

And the people who are into old school weirdness love it.  I hear both sides - personally I prefer 2d old school stuff but do want some more top tier games...it's hard to have patience.  Especially if you bought the iiRcade a long time ago waiting for the big modern titles to arrive.

Personally, if they release Streets of Rage 4 and Golden Axe (or Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder), I will basically be forever happy.  As it is right now, I'm very happy playing stuff like Elevator Action (with the Sanwa controls and terrific monitor) and Breakers Revenge (an obscure but surprisingly addictive Street Fighter / Fatal Fury type).

I saw your FB post, it would be nice to see this thread finally get some attention (I hope!).  I know what you mean about the AA format - I dont think I'll ever get used to the way things are outside of these types of forums (I guess this is what it means to grow old? ?).

The cabinet has always had its three groups: old school arcade nuts (like me), the modern men and their "I want Xbox and Playstation titles!" (ha!) and then those inbetween who seem to enjoy both.  While I've been an advocate of the arcade only titles, I have embraced some of the newer games as above all else, I'm still a gamer at heart.

If it keeps the system alive and allows it to prosper, more power too it.  I do not think the flat out "this system is doomed if new games don't come out" philosphy is going to help anyone.

But it doesn't hurt to kick iiRcade in the pants every now and then and remind them without new games, we have nothing to play...

I've hesitated posting this for a little while because I wasn't sure it was entirely relevant to this forum, but I thought it might interest some of you.

Basically I've been working on a new homebrew ...but ...it's not for any home system.  See what happened was I bought an old Galaxian arcade board off eBay a while back and wouldn't you know it then I got the idea to write a homebrew for it. :)

The name of the game is 'Panda Jump' - it's a spinoff of a 2600 game I wrote a while back (Panky the Panda).  It's not the same type of game though - this one's a pure platformer, not an adventure game.

In this one, you play the role of an unnamed panda who faces the task of gathering his favorite bamboo to eat.  Unfortunately due to habitat loss, the only place this bamboo grows anymore is inside of active volcanoes (of course it makes perfect sense that bamboo would be growing inside of volcanoes and that you would be willing to risk your life to get it - this is video game logic we're talking about, after all. :) )

The goal is just to get to the bamboo at the top of each screen within the alloted timespan and not fall in the lava.  There's only nine screens, so it's a pretty short game, but it's not easy (especially the last 2 levels).

To play it in MAME, you will need to put the zip file in your roms folder (back up your existing 'galaxian.zip' if you have Galaxian).  Then you will need to run it from the command line like this:

    mame64 galaxian

When you run from the command line, it will complain about the checksums not matching, but it will actually start.  It will not run from the MAME GUI, though - the GUI won't run anything if the checksums don't match (as far as I know).

I think it's mostly complete, but I haven't really gotten any feedback yet, which is why I'm posting it here.

Also the number of lives is either 3 or 5 - it's controllable via the 'lives' DIP switch in the game settings (the setting indicates 2 or 3 in MAME but it's actually 3 or 5 in this game).

I did ask about that, and the guy said it wouldn't help (and it was $200 per year).  He said that is really for like, phone tech support, it's not coverage for breakage / parts if I understood him right.

I love when employees don't have a clue about their own products.  Not saying this would cover the Tron cab but here's an excerpt from that coverage (BTW its listed on the same page as the cab to "add to cart"):

So far I'm still loving my Tron machine.  However have seen a fair bit of talk online about the trigger suddenly ceasing to work, the flight stick actually cracking and snapping in half, and the spinner failing.

I've not had any of these issues, but just to be safe thought I'd look into an extended warranty from Best Buy where I got mine.  Couldn't find where to get it on their website so I phoned, and after waiting for an agent for a fairly long time finally got told that no, they are not offering any Geek Squad / extended warranties on Tron. :(

They offer it on the other Arcade 1up cabs, so I found this quite disturbing.  Mind you, not disturbing enough to want to return it, just wish it wasn't the case.

Hopefully the reports of breakage are small in number but loud in volume.

Still haven't put mine together as I was debating returning but I should really assemble and test it myself.  By any chance did you look into their "totaltech" plan?  It says up to 24 months of product protection on most purchases, wonder if this would be covered?

This kind of highly selective "reporting" just lends enormous weight to the argument that this person is just another of those select few who seem to have an axe to grind with, and wish to damage, the ColecoVision community.

Remember when playing games just used to be about having fun?  Ah, the good old days...

    Yeah... a few points:

    • Most importantly, who named this Courtney sound chip SEX2764?

Completely missed that!  Too funny.  As somebody who grew up with games, gadgets and some of the coolest toys (I miss my Micronauts) I'm fascinated by the whole homebrew community and all aspects of it.  "Piracy" when it hurts things is one thing, but I don't see this as the case here.  And this isn't something new, games have always "borrowed" aspects from other games in one way or another.  From my first Opcode title (Space Invaders), CollectorVision (Mr. Chin) and even beta testing for Team Pixelboy (Girls Garden) I've been hooked and wouldn't want to see anything affect them like it did a few years back.

That has the code in order to get RGB on the Astrocade. Already written out.

You only need a small part of their total code in order to get RGB since you won't be simulating the other ICs.

AFAIK you should only need to sniff the data being fed into/sent out of the DATA IC.

I will look into it the best I can but if someone more familiar with the code could relay what pins I would need to account for then that might speed up the process of board design.

If I can get Ken Lill @kenzre to join in he could probably shed some light on things, I know he's looked into video mods before.

There are probably a dozen ways to get S-Video out of the Bally.

I'm not so sure about that.  People have kicked around coming up with other ways to get video out of the Bally / Astrocade for years and to date 8bitDomain was the only one to do it successfully and get it to the masses.  Even old timers from the yahoo group haven't done anything video related currently (there was supposed to a Composite mod but that never took off).  Honestly S-VIDEO is dated now to begin with.  I'd like to see an RGB mod that we could use an existing RGB to HDMI cable with like the RAD2X cables.

Just in time for the holidays, something new to play.  This game was inspired by a game from 1980 called Space Zap with a touch of Star Castle thrown in to the mix and a hint of Asteroids to finish it off.   Like my Asteroids port it's meant to be vector-ish and I was going for an early 80's retro look and feel.  Left and right stick rotate your cannon around the base, the left button fires plasma bursts and the right button slows down the rotation for more accurate aiming.  The space station's shields auto-regenerate over time but in an emergency you can give them a boost with any key on the pad, other than pause.  The demo lets you play the first round of the game.

Very cool, watched the video on YouTube.  I used to play the heck out of Space Fortress aka Space Zap on my Astrocade back in the day, crazy game!
