Is the Bally Astrocade worth getting, or is it just a novelty?
128Kgames replied to AlecRob's topic in Bally Arcade/Astrocade
Well, I won't count as far back as my first Computer System model but suffice it to say I've been collecting it currently for 20+ years. I can understand the hesitantly but frankly I never had a problem finding a working system. eBay was always an option and consoles could be had for <$100, I think the cheapest I picked up was $47 (and it came with the uber rare steering wheel accessory). I have no ideas about game store stock as I've never shopped in any. If their stock was lacking or consisted of mangled inventory, I would have passed too. The problem now is people see what working consoles sell for and assume their's is worth just as much. The untested aka not working console has always been an issue with online sales. Allen has always been approachable, inexpensive and from what I understand has a pretty fast turnaround. He also sells the latest multicart. The library is limited which is unfortunate. While there are many games on tape, compared to the cartridges I always found them a novelty. -

Don't believe the hype ? Honestly, I've had Astrocades for 20+ years now and they're still going strong. Recently, Allen Schweitzer who's become the de-facto go to guy for repairs has said the majority of the systems he's repaired / brought back to life these past few years were not custom chip failures. So the majority of consoles that have issues or don't work are most likely repairable. -
Ah, yup, that would confuse the he'll outta me too!

Hmm, you sure you're not confusing it with the last part of step 13? That shows installing the two screws. Unless the manual has changed, here's my part 12:

Hydo Thunder does this help?

Yeah, step 12 is confusing: installing the plexi cover either takes 2 people, taping it in place, holding it in place while you install the control panel (as I did when I got my DL cab) or my suggestion after the fact - lay the bartop on its back. The reason being is the plexi is held in place by it being slightly tucked under the lip of the marquee, and the the base of the control panel when its installed. Too many people did not follow this part resulting in plexi that was not held in place and would just "fall" when the cab was moved. That part of the manual needs better diagrams or some language to explain what needs to be done (I understand the manual was done this way so basically it could be used in any country). Did you buy the tempered glass plexi replacement? Or were you just referring to an install guide? (sorry, I dont know who Mike is) The last part sounds like you have the issue with the screen brightness being turned down all the way, I know there is a way to "fix" this and it sounds like you already tried something. I'll see if I can find anything else on the fix.

Just remember the 30 minute return window start from point of purchase, not when you start playing. I think that's what some people had an issue with, especially people that had problem downloading and installing. I suggested to those people they should open a case with iiRcade as soon as they have a problem, so its documented.

Good for you man! Unfortunately I've already bought a lot of the titles they've been marking down but I go through the list anyway and see if I missed any gems or something looks cool.

I know its not Neo Geo directly, but I thought you'd dig this Anthony for the Mega Drive / Genesis:

The DL cab is nice, i upgraded to it during Kickstarter. Glad to see more people are getting interested in iiRcade, i got hooked from the beginning (well, once I saw the actual cabinet! The ones at CES were fugly, but we learned later they were sort of thrown together to get them to the show). I liked iiRcade so much I got my son one second hand, its the classic model but with 128 GB of storage (Kickstarter exclusive). The upcoming online play in 2022 for basically any 2 player game including the vintage arcade ROMS is going to take the iiRcade to a whole new level and set the bar for the 3/4 cab market. You should join the Facebook group if you haven't already, we're a good bunch of people, and the CEO Jong-Wook Shin is there all the time, as are a number of the iiRcade team.

Apologies, I should have read this from my computer instead of responding to my phones pop-up. Yes, they've been running a sale on the cabinets for a few weeks now, the price for the Classic can't be beat for $299. I personally like the design as it reminds me of the Neo Geo Gold cabs.

Seeing how people are contacting 1Up about the lack of speech, people would tend to disagree with you.
-
Not agreeing with his post entirely but yeah, I've picked up real cabs for <$500. It's only been within the past 10 years or so that prices for in demand cabs have started to skyrocket. CRT maintenance? Really? I have 10+ year old CRTs that work just fine. When they need fixing that's one thing. You think the 1Up cabs won't need maintenance? Those things have failed right out of the box! WiFi on the cabs is gimmicky at best, just ask the guys who tried to play the NBA Jam cabinets against other players...? But yeah, for $700 1Up should have done their homework with DoT.

Double Dragon comes pre-installed, II and III are available to buy, and there are a bunch of wrestling games including the new Retromania Wrestling (they make that cab too): https://www.iircade.com/collections/arcade-machine/products/double-dragon-iircade-edition?variant=32096701087833

License issue? Nah, don't buy it. Not unless it's documented that they sampled David Warner's voice. I haven't found anything saying that's the case. And Bill pointed out already but according to sources (KLOV for one) some uprights had speech also. Plus, speech boards can be added to upright cabs via modification.

I guess he painted his console black - looks like he painted over the gold trim too? Or is it just me? -
Congratulations Arcade1Up for f*cking up yet another cabinet! I hear they didn't use the ROM with speech for Discs of Tron... 3 years later and they still can't build their cabinets right...

Astrocade controllers not only stand the test of time (40+ years) but they are hands down the most ergonomic, most versatile design of any of that eras controllers. It may take a minute to get used to but the pistol grip and trigger fire button makes for some amazing play. The joystick is smooth as can be and the built in paddle was a brilliant idea. That (paddle) is the only part that can get sketchy over time, but a few drops of alcohol and some twisting usually do the trick. -
