  1. Well, I won't count as far back as my first Computer System model but suffice it to say I've been collecting it currently for 20+ years.

I can understand the hesitantly but frankly I never had a problem finding a working system.

eBay was always an option and consoles could be had for <$100, I think the cheapest I picked up was $47 (and it came with the uber rare steering wheel accessory).

I have no ideas about game store stock as I've never shopped in any.  If their stock was lacking or consisted of mangled inventory, I would have passed too.

The problem now is people see what working consoles sell for and assume their's is worth just as much.  The untested aka not working console has always been an issue with online sales.

Allen has always been approachable, inexpensive and from what I understand has a pretty fast turnaround.  He also sells the latest multicart.

The library is limited which is unfortunate.  While there are many games on tape, compared to the cartridges I always found them a novelty.

Lovely console, it's been ages since I've seen/played one, but I never took the plunge.  I was most interested probably a decade ago, and they were expensive then.  The biggest detraction for me were that working consoles could die somewhat randomly, even if you treated it with kid gloves.  They were also deemed non-repairable, which I assume remains the case if a chip goes.  I remember custom fans people installed to cool the system!

    Don't believe the hype ?

Honestly, I've had Astrocades for 20+ years now and they're still going strong.

Recently, Allen Schweitzer who's become the de-facto go to guy for repairs has said the majority of the systems he's repaired  / brought back to life these past few years were not custom chip failures.

So the majority of consoles that have issues or don't work are most likely repairable.

It appears that the manual has changed, which of course, they are allowed to do.  This one isn't a biggie since like I said it was just confusing and leads me to think that on some editions the screws come already in the side of the control panel.  Just not mine. :)

Ah, yup, that would confuse the he'll outta me too!

Well I guess I would call it a rough start.  Got my bartop (stand arriving tomorrow).  Got it together without too much trouble (Step 12 in the manual makes no sense and threw me, as do the instructions for the tempered glass that conflict with what Mike's YT How To indicates...but whatever).  But it powered up with a loud pop on the speakers, and no video other than a slightly greyer than black screen.  And after reading comments and suggestions online, I've tried everything without any luck.  Put it to sleep, woke it up, put it to sleep, turned it off, turned it on, same deal.  Powered it off, unplugged it, waited a few, powered it on, same deal, no sound, no video.  Emailed support, am sad.  Damned thing looks ABSOLUTELY AMAZING though, just...doesn't work.  Uggggggggh.  Hopefully support will take care of me, other than the weird "move the joystick 12 x to the right, then down 2x, then A, then hold it to the right" which sounds like some sort of firmware fubar and in any case doesn't work for mine.

Oh well, first world problems.  Wah, my brand new arcade machine won't power on, woe is me! :P

Yeah, step 12 is confusing: installing the plexi cover either takes 2 people, taping it in place, holding it in place while you install the control panel (as I did when I got my DL cab) or my suggestion after the fact - lay the bartop on its back.  The reason being is the plexi is held in place by it being slightly tucked under the lip of the marquee, and the the base of the control panel when its installed.  Too many people did not follow this part resulting in plexi that was not held in place and would just "fall" when the cab was moved.   That part of the manual needs better diagrams or some language to explain what needs to be done (I understand the manual was done this way so basically it could be used in any country).

Did you buy the tempered glass plexi replacement?  Or were you just referring to an install guide?  (sorry, I dont know who Mike is)

The last part sounds like you have the issue with the screen brightness being turned down all the way, I know there is a way to "fix" this and it sounds like you already tried something.  I'll see if I can find anything else on the fix.

  5. Just remember the 30 minute return window start from point of purchase, not when you start playing.  I think that's what some people had an issue with, especially people that had problem downloading and installing.  I suggested to those people they should open a case with iiRcade as soon as they have a problem, so its documented.

New sales on games are online, RetroMania Wrestling is $18 down from $30, WonderBoy is $9 down from $15, among others.  Even though I haven't been notified my iiRcade has shipped I bought them already (and no I don't care about the 30 minute return policy lulz).

Good for you man!  Unfortunately I've already bought a lot of the titles they've been marking down but I go through the list anyway and see if I missed any gems or something looks cool.

  7. The DL cab is nice, i upgraded to it during Kickstarter.  Glad to see more people are getting interested in iiRcade, i got hooked from the beginning (well, once I saw the actual cabinet!  The ones at CES were fugly, but we learned later they were sort of thrown together to get them to the show).  I liked iiRcade so much I got my son one second hand, its the classic model but with 128 GB of storage (Kickstarter exclusive).

The upcoming online play in 2022 for basically any 2 player game including the vintage arcade ROMS is going to take the iiRcade to a whole new level and set the bar for the 3/4 cab market.

You should join the Facebook group if you haven't already, we're a good bunch of people, and the CEO Jong-Wook Shin is there all the time, as are a number of the iiRcade team.

Looks like they've got those iiRcades on clearance... it could be worth it to pick one up and tilt down that speaker panel like it should be and put a proper marquee on it. Could look nice!

Apologies, I should have read this from my computer instead of responding to my phones pop-up.

Yes, they've been running a sale on the cabinets for a few weeks now, the price for the Classic can't be beat for $299.

I personally like the design as it reminds me of the Neo Geo Gold cabs.

Good luck getting a real cabinet for that price. And dealing with the maintenance of a CRT, and the huge weight and size difference.

    here's one for $2500 : https://www.ebay.com/itm/224646026610?hash=item344df25572:g:JesAAOSwcgphZvHA

Oh, and real cabinets have WIFI connectivity for online play? oh really, when did that happen.

    never.

Not agreeing with his post entirely but yeah, I've picked up real cabs for <$500.  It's only been within the past 10 years or so that prices for in demand cabs have started to skyrocket.

CRT maintenance?  Really?  I have 10+ year old CRTs that work just fine.  When they need fixing that's one thing.  You think the 1Up cabs won't need maintenance?  Those things have failed right out of the box!

WiFi on the cabs is gimmicky at best, just ask the guys who tried to play the NBA Jam cabinets against other players...?

But yeah, for $700 1Up should have done their homework with DoT.

I just had an idea for a cabinet, sorry if it's not an original thought:

Technos Japan licence, so the games would be

-Double Dragon (probably the design of the cabinet, it's their most popular game)

    -Double Dragon II

    -Double Dragon III

    -The Combatribes

    -WWF Superstars

    -WWF Wrestlefest

How about that? I think that is a blockbuster lineup, and in line with many of the other cabinets. It would only need to be 2-player with Joystick and 2 buttons each player.

Double Dragon comes pre-installed, II and III are available to buy, and there are a bunch of wrestling games including the new Retromania Wrestling (they make that cab too):

It was a licensing issue I think. Also, that was in the environmental cab version, and not the stand up version, since they were different.

License issue?  Nah, don't buy it.  Not unless it's documented that they sampled David Warner's voice.  I haven't found anything saying that's the case.  And Bill pointed out already but according to sources (KLOV for one) some uprights had speech also.  Plus, speech boards can be added to upright cabs via modification.

How fragile are the controllers? The Channel F controller is one of my favorite experiences in all of gaming and it sounds like the Astrocade controller is similarly great. I have no appetite for adding another expensive system to the roster, though, so I would want to use it with a MISTer eventually or an emulator for now.

Astrocade controllers not only stand the test of time (40+ years) but they are hands down the most ergonomic, most versatile design of any of that eras controllers.  It may take a minute to get used to but the pistol grip and trigger fire button makes for some amazing play.  The joystick is smooth as can be and the built in paddle was a brilliant idea.  That (paddle) is the only part that can get sketchy over time, but a few drops of alcohol and some twisting usually do the trick.

I’m a new Vectrex owner as of last week. One of my motivating factors in joining the community was seeing Vector Patrol on action on YouTube. Being both a lifelong fan of Moon Patrol and Vecterscope games (I still play a lot of Asteroids in the arcade) it was a no brained for me.

I was saddened to see Kristoff’s website is no longer running when I looked into buying Vector Patrol. Does anyone know how to reach him to inquire of it can still be purchased, along with the rest of his games?

I reached out to him on Facebook.
