Is the Bally Astrocade worth getting, or is it just a novelty?

I think their "fragility" is overrated. -

As Adam said, 1000% chance it doesn't work. I've been saying for almost 20 years untested=not working. -

Seems they're not so finicky as we thought - people used to think it was the custom chips that were burned out/fried/died, but Allen Schweitzer pointed out the majority of his repairs are not the custom chips being bad. So this is a good thing actually as it means a good deal of the systems with issues most likely can be repaired (Allen if you read this and I am incorrect on what you stated, please correct me ?). Owning a Home Library Computer and both White and "Standard" Bally Professional Arcade models from Montgomery Ward, I can say they are a great part of any collection (although I just display only the HLC and White BPA models myself). Of course no collection is complete without and actual Astrocade branded model in it. While I have taken a back seat to collecting for a while now, my holy grail is the Astrocade Kiosk. I'd pay good money for one of those in good condition. Oh, to be able to time travel when these were let go for $100 ... -
Intelligentvision Prototypes with Boxing and Gammon

I thought they were playing "strip" backgammon and the guy was losing... -
A Crossbow cab would be cool if you could get Chiller as well, but in this climate that's not gonna happen. Waaayyyy too many groups would complain, cancel, etc. it. It's not like back in the day it caused any controversy ???

The app just plain sucks, same exact issue with the "searching for your vcs" showing when launched. Users in the app store reporting the same.

Contact Allen Schweitzer here on AtariAge; he does Astrocade repairs, sells repro carts as well as the current release of the UltiMulti cart. ? -
Colecovision controller label source
128Kgames replied to overlord_manny's topic in ColecoVision / Adam
eColeco used to sell the OEM Coleco metallic discs, they're more substantial than just a sticker. Not sure if they still sell them but you can always reach out and ask: http://coleco.freeservers.com/ Don't let the sites look fool you, it's legit. -
Anthony I let them know this patch doesn't fix the sound on an Omega MVS, at least not on mine.

Interesting; I have two "Munchie" prototypes, the advertised title "Pac-Man" was to have been released under. I picked them up in a collection from a former Bally employee back in 2004. It would be interesting to know if the only difference between "Pac-Man," "Munchie," and "Muncher" was just the menu title, or if there is any actual difference in the builds. Here's the Astrovision catalog with "Munchie" from the Bally Alley web site: https://ballyalley.com/ads_and_catalogs/bally/BPA_Catalog_(With_9_Games).pdf You can see "Munchie" in action in the Astrovision "Astro Arcade" commercial at the 20 second mark: Interestingly, Astrovision had to change their name to "Astrocade" and the console as well - the system in the commercial actually has no cartridge bay cover label whatsoever.

First time modding an Astrocade (and its not mine!)

I wouldn't worry: the Bally Computer System models are the most common of this line, but a matching serial # shipping box is always nice. You could always reach out to Allen Schweitzer and see if he has a working spare motherboard, import and mod that one ?. -

Dude, you built a Composite mod based on a design from 1980?! Fantastic!!! -
So just we don't confuse people: same manufacturer - yes. Same board - no, hence why people are having issues with it. Pretty sure Ken is looking for schematics for the original "8bitDomain" board; I'm guessing he hasn't found the S-VIDEO board I traded to him years ago.
-
I've never seen one Ken. I'm assuming you mean the original S-VIDEO board from 8bitDomain, correct? You could always reach out to Mike Mallory and see if he has it.

With the RF shield completely removed (top/bottom) and all traces of the ancient "thermal paste" removed, I've never seen the need for heatsinks on anything, quite honestly. The whole problem with the RF shielding was that it was an afterthought - the case, motherboard etc. had already been designed without it, as is. So it was never meant to have one (RF) in its design. Plus no one ever revised it (much) during the Astrocade's lifetime. If you're looking for a Composite mod that doesn't require the modulator installed (at least I don't think it does) contact Ken Lill. -
People have done swaps with gen 1 cabs, including the monitor and bezel. Look on YouTube there are videos.

Sorry, I should have said look at the box, that's where I saw it needs a power supply.
-
Ah, OK I don't have a separate disk drive but yes it should have its own power pack. Here's a boxed drive on eBay for reference: https://www.ebay.com/itm/COLECO-ADAM-5-1-4-Disk-Drive-ColecoVision-COMPUTER-RARE-NOT-COMPLETE-CIB-RARE-/265235477619?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0

Disk drives as in floppy? Or do you mean the digital data pack drive in the Adam? Cause if you mean that the printer powers the Adam, there is no separate power supply.

Just don't play it on carpet, you'll be fine. The RF shield screwed things up as it was crammed in as an afterthought when Atari ratted them out to the FCC (or so I've heard...). I have one or two systems where I removed the RF shield completely and them seem to work fine with the existing vents. I dont advocate removing the shield necessarily anymore as I've actually had that cause problems where they didn't exist. -
Now Gorf is interesting as there was (still is?) an issue with the licensing due to "Galaxians" so I'd be interested in seeing if that actually makes the final cut.
-
What a stupid product, honestly. 1Up has seriously jumped the shark. Anyone with kids knows they'll play this (maybe) for 5 minutes, forget about it and move onto another toy. Somebody didn't do their homework...

Interesting, that's Adam’s video, will have to ask him if that was an actual cart and not a multi. Not sure but it might be possible to rename the titles on a multicart.
