  1. I can't say much about it right now, but there might be a surprise for you in a month or so 916407[/snapback] OK, looks like I can say a bit more. I just received a port of Stella for the PSP, and while I can't test it, the author says it works fine. So unless anything major pops up, it looks like Stella 2.0 will have a PSP port 917037[/snapback] ACK! I started a new topic just about this. Sorry. However, I have tested this and it works great. Still needs work on the d-pad controls, but analog works great. V-Sync needs fixing and speed throttling needs work, too. Overall, 80% of games are very very playable.
  2. Check out this post over at PSPUPDATES.COM: Stella PSP V0.1 Released! At last, PSP VCS Emulation! This was long anticipated in the PSP homebrew and emulation circles. This has got to be one of the coolest ways to carry your VCS with you in your pocket. The emulator, plus 563 roms (not sure that I have all of them) took only 4MB on my memory stick. Note that the emulator is still in it's earliest stages, but it is already very playable!
  3. Been around to my favorite forums with this: Is anybody else out here getting into emulation on the Pocket PC. I have an HP iPAQ 5450 running Pocket PC 2002 with the following emulators: PicoDrive - Sega Genesis Pocket VCS - Atari 2600 PocketNESter - Nintendo Entertainment System (Famicom) CE/GG - Sega Master System and GameGear Pocket Commodore 64 - Commodore 64 (duh) MAME CE3 - Various arcade games including TEMPEST! PocketSNES9X - Super Nintendo Entertainment System (Super Famicom) PocketEngine - PC Engine/Turbografx-16 PocketClive - Sinclair Spectrum Neko Project ][ - PC-9801 These are the emulators that have given me the best performance. Many don't run well with sound emulation on (even from this list) or require massive frameskips that make gameplay difficult at best (Pocket SNES9x has never given me good performance). Typically 8-bit emulation works best. Pocket Commodore 64 is near flawless (very minor things that it handles poorly, but it does handle them). PocketNESter is awesome too, but can sometimes go into some kind of a graphics glitch that can cause you to need to hard reset your PPC. PocketClive is perfect. CE/GG works near 100% (Out Run has some graphics issues and the small screen makes it awkward at times). Pocket VCS is near perfect as well and my favorite way to play any kinds of games on the PPC. MAME CE3 works okay, but it does do a perfect (no sound though) emulation of Tempest. Pocket Engine requires no sound and a frameskip of 1/4 to run well, but it does okay for Final Soldier (my favorite) and Super Space Invaders, though unfortunately it doesn't allow key configuration changes and that makes Space Harrier very cumbersome to play (a bummer). PicoDrive is good but does not even give you an option for sound emulation; it's very fast for a 16-bit system emulator but the small screen and lack of 100% compatibility with many games leaves much to be desired (can't play Gunstar Heroes on it). Does anyone else emulate on one of these devices? What are your recommendations?

Jeff Minter is truly one of the greatest coders ever to come upon the scene and I am very happy to have been able to pay honor to him directly with this hack!
  5. I am a mondo fan of Jeff Minter! His games on the Commodore 64 are classic, not to mention what I believe to be his crowning achievement on the Atari Jaguar - TEMPEST 2000!!!! I took my graphic cues from the C64 classic YaK game, ANCIPITAL, and I did my very own re-work of Berzerk (yes, I know, do we really need another Berzerk clone?) featuring the Ancipital in the place of the player and mutant llamas in the place of the robots. Otto has been replaced with the YaK himself (a yak head at least, that is). You are the Ancipital, fresh from your adventures on the Commodore 64. Mutant llamas from the edge of time have come to your galaxy seeking to cause general llama mayhem and mischief and perhaps to graze a field or two. Armed only with your standard issue basic laser thingy that is given to all Ancipitals in need of using some such basic laser thingy or other you must fight off the llamas in arena after arena of battle. Beware of the all-powerful codemaster YaK who will attempt take you out with his deadly YaK death touch! The fate of all Ancipitalkind is in your hands! hehehe... ...couldn't resist a bit of Minter-esque humor. Anyways, here's a screeny and the bin: yak.zip
  6. I haven't gotten a chance to play this one yet, but I tend to agree that the theme might have made more sense had the Borg ship and the Federation ship been reversed. I have been experimenting with converting the Yar into a Federation ship myself. Maybe I'll work out a Macross hack of this instead. Still, it looks like great work and I'm looking forward to playing.

  8. Still working on my little hack of Defender. I have drawn up a box cover for it, and I am working on a cartridge label for it before moving on to a manual. I am just wondering if there are any templates out there for the various artwork. I already got all the fonts and I used the original Defender box art as a rough guide, but a proper template would be a great tool, particularly for future designs. Anyways, if anyone knows of where I might get some templates if they exist, please reply. Thank you all again for the help. BTW, here is the cover art for Macross: Zentran Attack!

  10. BLUE Valkyrie Max Verision? ROTFL!!! OMG!!! I changed the color of the ship from blue to white because most Valkyries are white in MACROSS! TOO FUNNY! I could have left the game colors alone and still had an accurate depiction of a MACROSS Valkyrie! Hahaha! Thanks for the great remarks, I'm glad to see a fellow Macross fan here.
  11. As promised, and with much gratitude to Nukey, here is my hack of the original Defender! I am an old school anime fan, and particularly of MACROSS (some of you might remember it under it's US title: ROBOTECH), so I decided that I would make a hack based on MACROSS. The hack is essentially a graphics hack: -Changed player ship into a Valkryie/Veritech in Gerwalk/Guardian mode. -Changed player ship exhaust to match style of Valkyrie/Veritech exhaust. -Changed player explosion from starpoints to semi-circular clouds to resemble the explosions in the anime. -Changed player shots from two-line solid shots to one-line pulses to resemble the machine gun style shots in the anime. -Changed landers, mutants, spikeballs, and swarmers into Zentraedi battlepods and Zentraedi officers battlepods. -Changed mine laying craft into Zentran (Zentraedi male) soldiers in powersuits. -Changed icons of bombs to resemble the missiles fired by the Valkyrie/Veritech. -Changed the copyright notice to ©2004 Big West (Big West being the copyright holder on all things MACROSS worldwide). -Changed various colors to better approximate the anime colors of the player and enemies (not sure that it helped the look of the playfield much, though). I used Hack-O-Matic 2, DiStella, DASM, Edit, and Glenn Saunder's HTML TIA color chart over on MiniDIG. I really enjoyed doing this hack. I learned quite a bit and am happy to have been able to use more than just Hack-O-Matic 2 (though it helped me immensely). Hacking the color was great fun and makes me kind of proud. I'd really appreciate any feedback you can give me as well as any suggestions for further mods to the game.   12. Okay, just an aside: Is there some kind of a table of color values somewhere or is it an arbitrary thing of trial and error with those values? I know I'm probably looking at this thing too simplistically and that this is probably a bigger job than I might be figuring, but I'm willing to work at it. Thanks again.
  13. I have been working on a hack of the original Defender game. It's not going to be much, just a basic graphics hack. I have worked out all of the graphics using Hack-O-Matic 2 (does that make me some kind of a lamer?), but I'd like to do more than just change the graphic shapes. I figure that I need to find out where the color registers for the various on-screen objects are and what values correspond to which colors. Specifically, I want to be able to change the color of the player ship and of each of the enemy ships, and possibly the color of the explosions. Further on, I would like to change the playfield graphics, specifically the radar view. But this is not something I want to tackle now. I understand a little 6502 assembly and how to use an assembler/disassembler, but I'm not very proficient though I think I could handle figuring out a color register or two. Finally, if anyone has a commented disassembly of this game, I'd much appreciate a copy or a link as The Dig seems to be defunct. Thanks to everyone in advance, I promise to share my hack when I get it to the point where I want it (or as close as I can fumble it).
