Sorry, I can't let that pass - that is absolutely not true. Just because a computer has some design, there's an automatic (and lazy) assumption that it's, at best, only as good as any other computer, that's it's just bought by posers. You know, the kinda people that buy Bang & Olufsen Sure, there used to be a bit of a badge thing with Apple stuff and there were people who just stupidly bought one to look cool, but it's not even like the Apple logo has the same cache that it used to either. I mean, iPods aren't exactly rare and exclusive. But Macs still sell, for the same reason that BMW cars still sell, they're made well and they work well. Now I'm not saying that Macs are better than PCs (although I feel that's true for me, but I'd defend to the end your right to use whatever you want), they're just more expensive computers that justify the price tag with higher build quality and a fantastic OS. I'm sure a $2000 Windows laptop is as kick ass as a $2000 Macbook Pro, but in totally different ways, and to totally different users.

Possibly. However, are we to believe that Chris Curry never got angry or made a stupid decision? And, while I'm sure their basic facts are right, some of the scenes were a bit much - one in particular springs to mind; Clive is sitting in his dining room with his wife eating dinner, but he's sitting there like the freaking Emperor, in this dark hall in a high backed oak chair, brooding in some self imposed solitude. They might as well have flashed the word 'BADDIE' on the screen I'm no Sinclair apologist, but I know a biased dramatisation when I see it.

So, what consoles do you currently have hooked up?
liveinabin replied to Rev. Rob's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Right now, just the PS3, although the Xbox (original, modded) is also sitting under the TV, but it's not hooked up. Not playing a lot of old games lately, well, not playing a lot of anything that isn't Fallout. -
Need help with a Macintosh SE
liveinabin replied to Poopopyo's topic in Classic Computing Discussion
My solution was to buy two zip drives from ebay, one USB, one serial. Downloaded zip drivers for the SE HERE, copied them to a 3.5"" floppy (although you'll have to tape over a hole on the disc to fool the SE into thinking it's a single sided - Google around for that). Installed them and plugged in the Zip drive. Plugged the USB zip into my modern Mac (although a PC would be just as good) and searched around the net for stuff. There's absolutely tons out there. -
I'm picking up the GOTY edition this week. I've finished the regular game, bought Broken Steel and finished that too but the other four DLC packs are a bit pricey - buying the GOTY disc from Amazon is actually still cheaper. Even though I've finished the main game and found everything, I'm still enjoying wandering the wasteland sticking it to the bad guys. Oh yeah, you absolutely NEED the Broken Steel add-on. It's basically the proper end to the story - worth buying for the Tesla Cannon alone.

Jurassic: The Hunter just announced: releases in 3 weeks
liveinabin replied to vdub_bobby's topic in Modern Gaming Discussion
It's got a ':' in the title. It's going to have to be especially good now to get over that. -
LocoRoco is one of, if not THE, best games on the PSP. The blurb isn't helpful because it's a pretty difficult game to write about. Just play it. Come to think of it, there are demos on the PSN store. Personally, I liked LocoRoco 1 more than 2 - 1 just seemed a bit more focussed.

iPhone games...I'm actually impressed
liveinabin replied to Lord Helmet's topic in Modern Gaming Discussion
Blimey, Namco are releasing Ace Combat XI (sequel to the PSP game) on iPhone. Looks pretty hot. (wishes) Ridge Racer can't be far behind. -
I find the whole matter dull. I use Macs myself but have to use PCs at work (a school) and I, being the computer geek, do tech support for all the teachers. Windows makes me so damn angry, it's such a fight to get anything done. Still, I'll defend everyone elses right to use it to the end. It's an OS and computers are a good thing, whatever they're running. Just don't expect me to buy a Dell anytime soon

Exactly. I've been wanting the ability to gift games for ages. The Wii has had it for a long time. I've often wanted to send a pal a game and hook up together in it online. This can't come to UK soon enough.

The GOTY edition of Oblivon is, happily, the one selected for the budget Platinum release (in PAL territories at least). I liked Oblivion but didn't really get to care for any of the characters. For me, Fallout 3 just blew it away (and every other game ever for that matter). I was very disappointed with Folklore - a nice idea but with a repetitive dreary game at it's core. If it's launch games you want, may I recommend Ridge Racer 7. Big arcade fun!

IL-2 Sturmovik is really really good. I love the wide variety of controls and difficulty - you can play on a dual shock on arcade mode (complete with HUDs) or push it all the way up to simulator, where you need one of those sticks and all you see is what the pilot would see - Simulator mode is a proper flight sim with no concessions to consoledom. The atmosphere is good too. There's loads of historical video and text in there to put you in the moment, the arching story is believable and Jeremy Soule's Dambusting music sets the scene really well. I fought the Battle of Britain yesterday, seeing the white cliffs of Dover through the cloud as I dropped the last Heinkel was a real moment. Ah, dear old blighty! As for my next purchase, I'm buying Fallout 3: Game of the Year edition for PS3. I've got the regular game and a bit of DLC but the new packs are too expensive on their own - cheaper to buy the GOTY version. Silly really.

I can't be bothered with online gaming. I played a but of PSO on the Dreamcast but that was still when it was a novelty, and the co-operative nature of the game made it a good social tool. That aside, though, when I play a game, I'm wanting to escape into it's world for a few minutes - like a good book - and other people just break that illusion.

I'm more than fine with having all my games as downloads, but Sony's prices are ridiculous. The games on the UK store are at least RRP. I'm no fan of UMDs but you can pick up new boxed games on Amazon for loads less that you could download them from Sony. Also, the 'Minis' on the PSN store seem to be iPhone ports but more expensive. Hardware wise, it's the perfect handheld but I think Sony have really messed up every other aspect of it. They should have held on to this superior form factor for the PSP2 because, as it stands, I don't see what's to gain for the gamer. It does literally nothing that the older cheaper PSP can't do.

Surely if you give someone else your login to 'share' games, it also gives carte blanche access to your bank details in the store. Not clever.

Tales of Monkey Island episode 1 - free today it seems!
liveinabin replied to liveinabin's topic in Modern Gaming Discussion
You don't have to buy squat. Although there's an overarching storyline, each episode is a complete, self contained adventure in itself. -
What games SMELL the best?
liveinabin replied to the.golden.ax's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Saturn games. More specifically, Euro Saturn games. Maybe it was something about the sheer amount of black plastic, but it smells of awesome. -
Oh bless. This is just internet filler. I always wanted Namco to release a machine. Back in the day when arcades were still relevant, a Namco machine would have been a real contender.

It's the same with every system, you don't get the big RPGs until later on. They just take so much longer to make than other games. PS3s been out 2 years and we're just beginning to see them appear which seems about right. Admittedly the PS2 got Final Fantasy X after just a year, but I would imagine that development time for a PS3 RPG is a good deal more than for the PS2 (and X wasn't that technically amazing anyway).

The reason for the Roboking is (as far as I understand):- The King of all the Cosmos has had an accident and is in a coma. His post has been temporarily filled by the Roboking. The game is split between classic levels (which you're going through to try and revive the memory of the King and wake him) and the new ones (which are under the Robokings jurisdiction). Barking mad but then it IS Katamari. Nice to have a demo, although the two stages on offer weren't the best.

The 40Gb model is a little quieter and runs cooler than the original 60Gb machine. You can also get one for the same price as a slim, without foregoing any of the nice fit and finish. You'll probably get a couple of decent games thrown in free too. I agree with the general 'have a separate PS2' consensus. A slim PS2 takes up exactly no space and they run everything with the added bonus that you can (with a disc and some plug-in widgety bits of plastic) play import games on it too.
