Picked up Fallout: New Vegas on Friday. I've clocked 32 hours so far (this is not usual for me but I'm loving it).
Glad I altered my preorder from the PS3 version. My Fallout 3 on PS3 used to crash every hour or so. Not a single crash so far on New Vegas. Guess it's always wise to buy it for the host system.

Right. 4 hours in and I'm quite enjoying it for the most part. While it hasn't crashed yet, I have had many instances where VATS has let me down, doing little or no damage at close range to very weak enemies.
Also, I really hate the new level of complexity with regards to ammo.
There are way too many variables now and I just don't care. I went straight for energy weapons, nice and simple.

I really hate it that you can't revisit whole sections of the alien spacecraft. I mean, I payed for that! Where's the harm?

Just got released in the UK. Got my copy and just had time to go home and install it on the 360 before I had to leave again. 9pm can't come fast enough.

Apparently, magazines give you a much higher (+10) stat boost for a short time. There are times in Fallout 3 when that would have been really useful (hacking computers, swaying a conversation etc.).

Went in to Gamestation (in UK) where my preorder is. Asked to swap order for a 360 version when it's released here on Friday.
Apparently, they don't know their allocation and I'll have to check on the day. Nothings easy.

Oh my word. The PS3 game locks up almost every time I play, at least once per session, requiring a full off-at-the-mains restart.

Excellent. I'll switch my preorder tomorrow. The fan noise is a fair trade off for a more reliable game played with a better controller.
The visuals in the two console versions of Fallout 3 were identical, weren't they?

Nintendogs was awesome.
I often wonder whether Nintendos repeated use of underpowered hardware is what leads to the lack of serious support. It's certainly biting them on the ass this time. Or maybe it's just their attitude.
Not that they're doing badly, of course, but it seems that Nintendo systems are just for Nintendo games.

Okay:) that's one vote for the 360 version. May I ask, did your playthrough of the 360 game include any of the DLC? I've heard that's where the problems start.

Hmmm. It seems that Vegas DLC is going to be exclusive to 360 for a while. I've preordered the PS3 version , partly as I had Fallout 3 on PS3 but mainly because I think the 360s fan noise might get distracting.
Mind, the PS3 version of Fallout 3 is a total crashfest. Is the 360 version any better? I'm wondering if it might well be as the PS3 game was essentially a 360 port.

The new 360 seems to have gone for the custom integrated GPU and CPU design (rather like the iPad does). Gotta admit, smart move - that's really going to make the system run cool. Also, apparently, the new chip is running intentionally slow to match existing 360 processing. Underclocking in a console! I'd be astonished if we get anything like the fail rate of the old ones. Wish MS had been quicker about fixing it though. I bought an Elite 2 months before the new one hit. Doh

I use that lunch box every day, and the bobblehead sits right by the TV. By comparison, the new game collectors edition seems a bit lacklustre. I have no need for poker chips, a comic or a deck of cards.

Anchorage is the only one I didn't try (as it adds little to the game). Broken Steel is the one you need first. It removes the 'end' of the game, replaces it with a proper big fight, raises the level cap and populates the world with some new enemies. Best piece of DLC ever.
My 250 hours are made up of lots 2-3 hour blocks patrolling the world and picking fights with bad guys. It's quite fun to just fire up the console and be an absolute bad-ass for an hour or two every so often:)
That said, there are so many little details and plot points in the Fallout world that, with the DLC installed, it'd be easy to enjoy a good 150+ hours without being as aimless as I am.

Well it depends what you mean by contemporary. Modern warfare and Angry Birds are both modern games and theyre very very different.
Sure, there's a whole load of dull samey, plodding stuff at the big-budget end of the market. But that's because of the high risk of releasing anything that costs so much to make, it's always going to play safe. It's the same as music and films.
However, lately, games have definitely improved with the rekindling of interest in other, more unusual game types. Nintendo are perhaps to thank for kickstarting this, but it's independents on platforms like iPhone where it's really kicking off.
Looking at the sheer variety of A grade games there, it's clear that we've never had it so good.
Gaming is just much bigger now, you've just got to find your niche.

I've just passed 250 hours play time on my Fallout 3 save. I think it's time to dress him in his best suit and find him a comfy chair in his home in Megaton. That's an overdue retirement

I didn't bother with the Collectors edition (it's £70 in UK - do the conversion on that for a shock) but I'm busy getting all my real world tasks done before 22nd, it'll be too late after that
God, I hope it doesn't suck.

Well have a go at the third game, LocoRoco Midnight Carnival. It's download only from the PSN store. I think it may be a slightly smaller game than the others and it's also a slight step up in difficulty. That said, you're clearly more than capable. Well done for getting all the MuiMui, by the way. I bet that involved some colorful language

This won't work. The idea is to remove the bad, now discounted games so as not to taint the brand for the newer, hopefully better titles. Thing is, the stores will still be flooded with even cheaper used copies.

I absolutely agree with the pros and cons stated here.
I have both (got a PS3 first, recently a 360 - both old versions) and I must admit that, though it's noisier, though it has less storage and is technically the inferior, the Xbox 360 somehow FEELS better. It's purely an emotional standpoint but I find the PS3 user interface quite a cold, sterile thing. It's extremely Sony.
In comparison, there's something wonderfully funky about the 360 UI. It's colourful, friendly and there's something much more American about it (like it was rivetted together in Detroit).
Given that the new 360 has solved the noise problem and, one would assume given it's much reduced chip set and heat output, the famous reliability issues, I'd have to recommend it.
PS3 is still good though. It's a very good Blu-ray player and there's some great games on PSN.
Hmmm, OK. If you need the Blu-ray player, get the PS3. Otherwise, get the 360. Then, in a year or so when they're all cheaper, get the other one:)

I'm not a fan of dark enclosed game spaces either. However, while Fallout does have some tense moments, the armaments on offer, as well as the diminishing difficulty as you level up, make you feel more of a hero than a victim.
It's the feral ghouls that get me. The sound of them as they hunt you freaks me out. Still, as soon as they do charge at me, there's always the satisfying pause when you go into VATS (and breathe again) before spraying it's ugly head all over the wall with a headshot.
As for the other foes, I've found it prudent to always be looking for higher places to stand. Stick yourself on a good sized rock or up a flight of stairs, and you can pick off Radscorpions, Deathclaws, even super mutant behemoths with added ease.
Oh yeah, remember, in those dark buildings, only use your light when you need it. It gives you away. I recommend creeping about, laying mines in doorways and then firing a shot through said doorway to attract the bad guy on the other side. Step back and watch the limbs fly:)

Is it me or is it harder in this game to be a gun toting badass? I remember vividly that, in Fallout 3, by level 18 or so, I could handle pretty much anything. I'm level 16 in Vegas but I'm still very very weak. One shot kills are rare, successful headshots equally so.
I'm playing on easy (more interested in the moral choices than fighting). Is there something I'm doing wrong? My Special stats are all around 6 and my main stats are hovering around the 50 mark.
