  1. Not jumping ship* I have this question:

What other forums are good for Atari news and conversation?  :)

    * (but realizing I shouldn't put all my eggs in one basket... )

VideoGameSage:  Forums - Video Game Sage

It was created by people who migrated over after NintendoAge was purchased and shut down.  There is a large group of regular posters over there and while the interest typically skews a bit more towards Nintendo and Japanese systems, the users have a lot in common.  There isn't near as much in the way of development and programming discussion though.

  2. Concluded my first swap deal on Atariage. I couldn't be happier with the results.

Swapping/trading is fun!  Much more fun than buying and selling IMO.  I once met an Atariage member while on a business trip.  I flew his c64 boxes up to him and came back with a stack of carts!

  3. Atari sold 400,000 consoles in 1979.

I've always heard that they basically sold all of 'em from the first wave.  Then there was a bit of a lull.

Good thing Space Invaders eventually came along or that could have been the end of the story.

  4. I know it's almost ten years old now...but Double Dragon Neon is just one of the best brawlers ever made.  It's funny, has great enemies, stages, combat... Clearly a labor of love and full of humor and great action.  And with a killer ending, just terrific.  Oh, and how many brawlers are 3 plus hours long to beat?? Class of its own in that way.

    1. wongojack

      wongojack

All of that is probably true, but I actually found myself thinking that it seemed to bring the Double Dragon gameplay slightly forward while adding in an almost toxic preservation of the worst elements of 80s culture.  Turned it up to "Neon" with runaway sexist stereotypes and problems solved with violence.  I mean, it IS a videogame, so I wasn't expecting anything else, but it just sorta hit me across the face in a weird way, and I didn't want to play it anymore.

Still, I have it on my list to play later.  Maybe my timing was wrong or something.

  5. I got so fed up with Safeway's delivery. Their earliest time they could come was Saturday. So I tried Kroger's. Their earliest time was today. WTF?

In my area, DoorDash will go to the grocery store and deliver on their "normal" delivery timelines.

  6. Heading to Dallas for work (NADA trade show) Thurs-Sun.  Anyone have any recs for barcades or used game shops?

Tagging @Rick Dangerous as this status update may be hard to find.  Since you are downtown (ish) the 6th floor museum really is kind of a neat thing to visit.  We also have the George Bush presidential library if you are into that sorta thing.  Hope you enjoy your time in Dallas.

Ok, uptown.  Most of the stores are going to be in the burbs.  Your best bet for a quick hit at a barcade is Cidercade https://www.cidercade.com.  They offer a big selection of classic games and it is a professionally run place where you could take someone else who isn't into retro-games and they'd have a good time.  They have food trucks and sell . . . Cider.  It is their own brand of Cider.  It is good, but they don't really offer any other drinks, so be prepared.

Also kinda close by - I've never been, but the Two Bit Circus would be even more friendly to travelling co-workers who don't care about Donkey Kong, but it might leave you wanting more.  Dallas - Two Bit Circus

      Farther away

The closest store could be FX Game Exchange in Plano Home | FX Games (fxvideogameexchange.com).  It is NOT close, and they've downsized since the pandemic, but if you go up there, you can also visit Madness Games and Comics which is fun to browse through for board games and comics.

On the way up to Plano, you could also stop by Free Play Richardson Free Play Richardson....  Absolutely worth it.

      Even Farther

National Video Game Museum NVM - National Videogame Museum (nvmusa.org).  Your co-workers probably would dig this, but plan to spend multiple hours walking through the exhibits and playing in the arcade.  You can also JUST visit the arcade if you want.  They use the old quarter-per-play system.

There's at least 6 different mom n pop shops (retrobution, FX, RGR) if that's your thing, and yes we have Game Over locations.  For arcades, Free Play Arcade is amazing.  They are dedicated to 100% original arcade hardware, and there are multiple locations.  Plus, we have Cidercade, Quarter lounge, NVGM and even others.  There's also all the places that have thrown arcade games in the mix next to axe throwing or whatever.  On top of that there's the modern arcade stuff like PinStack, Main Event, Dave and Busters.  Those at least have a few of the new Stern pinball tables these days . . . Two bit Circus, I can't even keep up.

  12. The insurance company wants to fix my miata. It's 17yrs old and on a rebuilt title. Weird they're not totaling it again, but money is broken.

I see, so of course the car is rebuilt, and the title reflects that.  You didn't do anything to the title to rebuild the document.  That's what messed me up.

  14. So I did a crossword puzzle. The clue was "At sixes and sevens." The answer was "all over the map." What does that mean? I know what all over the map means, but not in context to the clue.

I first heard this expression in the lyrics of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical - Evita.  "Don't Cry for me Argentina"

  15. Hard drives have so much storage these days. Previously I would partition my drives, in case one part of the disk became corrupted somehow. But over the years that never happened to me - when I've had drives that have failed it's always been the motor giving out. Aside from backing things up on different drives, is there anything you do with individual drives to try to prevent disastrous loss of a huge amount of data?

    1. wongojack

      wongojack

I agree with you that partitions don't really help with drive corruption.  I mean sometimes some sectors go bad, but it is usually all or nothing for a consumer.  I usually just manually copy important files to a different drive every so often, and I prefer that method to wholesale backup.  I think of a HW failure as a chance to re-install the OS anyway, but I'm a weirdo like that, and I have easy access to Windows images.

I do like to partition my drives so that if I want to reinstall the OS, I can have an untouched partition that just stays the same between installs, but that is less and less important as most files (at least for business) are also in the cloud.

  16. I’ve read All Quiet on the Western Front from beginning to end the past 3 days. Certainly a depressing piece of literature. I’m genuinely curious how this could possibly have been adapted into a good movie.

    1. wongojack

      wongojack

Congrats.  I've never read it.  It is often regarded as the finest piece of anti-war literature ever written.  I think they must have been working on the recent Netflix movie before the war in Ukraine and Germany's new increased spending on defense, but I find that the release of the film is particularly well timed.

  17. Got a Commodore64 Mini finally.  What are the "must play" games on here, not overly familiar with the library.  TY.

    1. wongojack

      wongojack

Impossible Mission is on there.  If you've never played it then give it a shot.  Who Dares Wins is a nice Commando clone, and if you update then you get Galencia which is a nice Galaga-like homebrew.  Someone will probably recommend the Epyx mult-event games.  Try the C64 version of World Games.  It has unique songs for each of the events that take advantage of the C64 specs nicely.

  18. Today, 5 chimpanzees escaped from the zoo. One returned voluntarily (it is -16 C outside), the other four were shot. At least three of them died. 😞 The zoo claimed they didn't have enough tranquilizer to sedate the apes so their only solution was to kill the chimps as soon as possible.

    1. wongojack

      wongojack

Well before too long (100? 200 years?), we will have destroyed most of their habitat anyway.  When that time comes the zoo will be the only place they can live.

@jd_1138 French = pomme frites (fried potatoes).  And the French typically credit Belgium for their origin

  22. It is a bit ironic when a bank offers a savings account with a whopping 0.55% interest rate on your money, stating it is one of the highest rates for a traditional savings account covered by federal deposit laws.

    1. wongojack

      wongojack

We have gotten this BS in the USA for years now.  With our federal "prime" rate almost at 3.25%, the point of a savings account has been lost.  With years of this now (really since 2008), I'm afraid that it has likely punished less-complex investors quite hard.  All it took was the highest inflation rates in decades to get them to raise it by 0.5%.  At least that is what everyone expects to happen later this month, but it will still be about half what it was in '07.

LOL - I'm sure they've got their own porn sites by now.  THAT is an industry that Russia is capable of replacing.

Installer packages for Windows have been overly complicated for years.  I have some stories . . .  I'm interested in the scenario you ran into.  Are you installing from the Xbox app?  Is this something classic?
