    @x=usr(1536) Much appreciated!

I am fortunate to have a friend with a working Baby Pac coin-op, but we've both been curious about the 7800 conversion

I don't have that much access, but I have played the arcade game quite a bit (and recently).  Nothing can replace an original of course, but this homebrew is very good.  Go play it!

  3. Came to ask about subscriptions which I saw on the first page.  Then stayed for pages 2-8.

Before I came to AtariAge, I had the nostalgia, but I wasn't a real retro-gaming fan.  This community helped me grow through playing, collecting, repairing, and programming for retro games and systems.  The openness and willingness to share here was/is really something special, and I still visit AtariAge more than any other site on the internet - no seriously, this might as well be my homepage.

Things change I suppose.  Thinking about it - AtariAge was never going to stay the same.  I'm sad to see things change, but that's the way of things.  I'm happy for you, @Albert and very glad you still get to participate and make this community special.

  4. I was surprised at how much I liked Horizon Zero Dawn.  I thought that I even commented on it in this thread, but I did write something up here:  https://forums.atariage.com/topic/329714-modern-games-beaten-in-2022/?do=findComment&comment=5040997

I will say to @newtmonkey that you basically nailed it.  It is sort of a re-tread of other games, but somehow, it clicked with me and did things better.  I had no problems with the dialog and thought the story did enough to "get the job done."  Things do get more interesting once you get to the capital city.

Assassin's Creed II and Black Flag are both games I would give 5 out of 5.  Keep going with those for sure, but playing all those open world games together might remove some of their individual goodness.

  5. My wife and I installed and played last night via Game Pass on XBox.  We played for a few hours until you get to the first populated planet (I think it is called New Atlantis?  Constellation?)

Anyway, I haven't played any of the recent Bethesda games that have been focused on first person shooter gameplay (Anthem?  Prey?), and the design here seems to be heavily influenced by FPS games - kind of a disappointment.  I even had to lookup online if there was going to be "magic" in the game because I'm not really interested in playing a game where the main action revolves around collecting and shooting guns in first person.  It's just not my genre, and it was all guns last night - no powers.

We also somehow landed at the wrong place in the tutorial on a planet called Kreet and were wandering around wondering what went wrong.  We stumbled onto some enemies that we thought were part of the tutorial, but we figured out were meant to be dealt with much later in the game - made the emphasis on FPS play much more apparent than it would have otherwise because it kicked our a$$.  We switched to third person view and then got back on track with the tutorial where the enemies were much easier.  That's when we saw the old Bethesda come through - their games are REALLY about searching through furniture for semi-useless items.

Anyway, I'm sure I will play this, and it will be fun.  It certainly looked and sounded incredible, but my first playtime with it was kind of average in that I think the core genre seems to be a miss for me and a departure from what I was expecting based on old-school (mid-school?) Fallout and Elder Scrolls.

I'll also say that I am just not really interested in playing the parts of Bethesda games where you build your house or your settlement.  I usually skip those entirely, and it was a big turnoff for me in Fallout 4, so the parts of Starfield where you get to design a ship or a base are things I'm not looking forward to.  My wife loves that sh!+ though.

I wasn't on any part of the massive hype train for this game (I heard of it relatively late) but so far I am quite pleased with the game overall.  I've not run into any quest/core game bugs but I have had a few CTDs in the over 20 hours.

My special mission ship (won't say what, no spoilers) and my crappy base of mostly containers - but hey at least I built a parking spot for the ship 😄

You did great, asponge. There doesn't seem to be enough interest in the NES on this site for a high score club to endure long term which is a shame.

I very much enjoyed it while it lasted and hope that it starts back up again at some point.

Agree with this - thanks @asponge - the high score site is especially impressive.

You wouldn't win at all against someone who's good at, say, Street Fighter II or Mortal Kombat, by just bashing buttons, let alone win faster. You'd be lucky to even land a single hit, even if you played against him a thousand times in a row. I've seen other people say the same thing on other forums; it seems they've never played against anyone who wasn't a novice.

In 1991 when I was 16 I was working next to a drug store that had a small arcade in the back of the store, and they had a Street Fighter II: The World Warrior machine. I started playing it a lot, but only against the computer, because there was hardly ever anyone else there. After a couple of weeks I thought I was getting pretty good at it, because I could get to Vega, who was one of the four unplayable boss characters, though not without continuing quite a few times. Then one night some guy walked in there and started playing against me, and I couldn't do anything against him. He easily countered everything I tried. I played him probably 20 times in a row without even winning a single round. I learned quite a bit from that session though, and I started going to Space Port in Bangor after that where there were lots of good players, to learn even more. Current me, or even 17-year-old me, could do the exact same thing against 16-year-old me that he did.

Wow - dug up a thread about new collectors ignoring Atari to quote a post from 2015 about fighting game strategy.  Honest question - How did you even find yourself reading this post?

  9. XBox Series X/S

    Minecraft 830

    Out of Space 44

    Rain World Demo 40

More Minecraft - my wife died in lava with all her gear, so we are slowly replacing that stuff.  It happens to everyone in this game eventually . . . Classic Minecraft. Why am I still playing this?  We were hoping to kill the dragon before Starfield came out, but that seems unlikely now.

Also, I got inspired to play "Rain World" based on a video about games that leave a bad first impression.  I think it has been updated to give more clues to new players (maybe for the worse).

  11. I wanted to reply to this thread becuase I recently ordered and received Asteroids Attack from Ricardo at GameSelect.  It is a little hard to find out more information because it seems that the only online presence maintained for GameSelect is on Facebook.  You can get to their page going here:  http://www.gameselect.com.br. or just straight through FB:  Facebook

Ricardo also has several other posts here on AtariAge with information like these
    https://forums.atariage.com/topic/334340-space-pac-man-new-batari-basic-game/

    https://forums.atariage.com/topic/340097-game-select-hero-2-for-atari-2600/?do=findComment&comment=5114187

At first, I was a little bit perplexed at how to order, but it turns out that all you need to do is email Ricardo at GameSelect at atarigameselect@gmail.com

I emailed him and he immediately responded with information about how to order.  I ordered HERO 2 and Asteroids Attack and they arrived fully tracked and signature guaranteed within only a few days.

HERO 2 is an excellent and professionally done game with fully re-imagined levels very similar to the original.  I have personally played around with many different HERO clones and even tried my hand at re-coding the game and re-designing levels in windows.  This is an excellently done continuation of HERO that sits on the line between remake and full sequel.  I haven't played all the levels yet, but the manual says it has 20 levels (just like the original) and they are completely different and quite challenging.  The game REALLY seems to start at level 9 where there are multiple paths and an 'early' appearance of the chompers.

Asteroids Attack represents something that the 2600 doesn't see very often - a horizontally scrolling shooter.  I've really enjoyed Asteroids Attack a lot.  It doesn't have much to do with Asteroids, but if you are a fan of horizontal shooters and want to see the genre represented on the 2600 then this game is for you.  I haven't beaten the game (and may never will), but I like that there is the possibility of an ending, and while challenging, the difficulty ramps up very nicely.  There's even a way to skip the first few levels described in the manual if you think they are too easy.

I said this on the HERO 2 thread, and I'll say it here, the price + shipping may be a bit steep for some, but I don't think it is unreasonable for what you are getting - original game, original packaging and fully working 2600 cart.  If you are on the fence at all, I'd say just go through with it and email Ricardo.  Even if you end up regretting your purchase, you can probably find another Atari collector in your country who didn't email Ricardo and you can sell it to them later. ;)

  12. FYI - here is the entire text of the email Ricardo sent me after I inquired about purchasing from Game Select:

That was his FPGA project (hence why he'd of tried to license cores from Kevtris).

What I'm referring to was another project that happened long ago before the Atari Flashback 2 was even a thing, back in the early 2000's. He designed a 7800 replica and they were to be sold at retail along with original 2600 and 7800 games from O'Shea. I incorrectly stated that it was Atari SA. Rather, it was O'Shea that commissioned Legacy Engineering to do this to create a market for their millions of boxed Atari games but they ultimately changed their mind.

You aren't imagining that.  I remember that story too.  All those years ago and we still don't have something as good as that idea sounds.

Well since the FB2 architecture has never been used since, I'd say it is the same reason as always.  Guesses are

Cost - that chip/chipset too expensive

Ownership - it is possible ownership of that design is disputed

I am totally neutral here, but even if Albert was somehow trying to drive up sales by discontinuing products en mass, he's still offering a discount on products that have been on sale for several years at the same price.

So, if this is a conspiracy then I suppose the worst possible outcome is that Albert would continue to offer those same products at the reduced price?  But now he's convinced people to buy them in a rush?

It seems like the most likely outcome is that Albert stops offering those products exactly as he said he would (no reason to think otherwise) and members have been extended a never before seen discount on things they actually want to buy.
