Good times with xenomorphs once again this week! I've been wanting to play Aliens: Infestation on the Nintendo DS for half past forever, but physical copies were always far too expensive so I finally decided to give it a go on the Retroid Pocket 3+. I totally understand why physical copies go for so much now, since it was made by the WayForward team who made Shantae and the amount of care and attention to detail they put into all their games certainly shows here. I enjoyed Aliens: Infestation so much that I played through it all the way from beginning to end, and found it easy and unobtrusive to just switch between the two screens for inventory management and checking the map using the Retroid Pocket 3+'s L2 and R2 buttons.

This game is on my backlog list as well.  I played it briefly on a DS multi-cart (that now does not function), and I would like to get a DS multi-cart working some day.  Maybe I should get on that.

How did the emulator deal with the dual screen on that handheld?

Lot's more Minecraft.  Like, too much and across platforms.  Sheesh, they sure make it easy to waste your actual life on this virtual world.

We are trying to achieve the "Max Trader Villiage."  To do this you have to

    1) Find a village <- not as easy as it sounds

    2) Figure out how to give the villagers all the unique professions

    3) Keep them alive

    4) Level up their professions by trading with them

I built a guild hall and a giant 10-story tower for the "Librarian" profession that we are calling "The Citadel" (working name thanks George RR Martin).

Some Dreamcast racing this week.  I am really just not experienced with the genre at all from like 1998 forward, so I had never played any "Rush" game.  I had fun with San Francisco Rush 2049 and enjoyed the different game modes very much.  Lots of fun little secrets to find on the map etc.  I would have played Tokyo Extreme Racer 2, but the GD-ROM emu that I have was crashing.  It could be the SD card that I am using tho play this specific game, but I got into it enough to see that it is very similar to the original Tokyo Highway Challenge with some nice improvements.  Would like to play it more.

A big week as I had a lot of time off at home to play.  My wife and I are playing Minecraft all the wrong ways and trying to make progress as quickly as possible while still really being pretty uneducated about the game.  Still we are really getting our value out of that GamePass subscription this month as we can play together effortlessly on Xbox or PC.  I'm also still playing New Vegas, but it took a back seat to co-op in Minecraft for most of the weekend.

And now I've spent more than two hours trying to figure out what $250 in gift cards could get me, with the limitation that I must only buy from (online) stores accepting the gift cards. Surely I could spend real money instead but it would leave me with having to spend the gift cards on something else.

It looks like I could get an AMD Ryzer 5 4600G setup with a A520 based motherboard and 32 GB for that money, perhaps add a little extra. I'm hoping I can reuse my current chassis, PSU (though only 300W), HDD, DVD etc. Perhaps adding a SSD would help with performance. No monster, but on average 16000 pts on PassMark which is nearly 7 times my current score and it seems adequate gaming graphics if I ever wanted to take that route. But I haven't bought anything yet...

    Buy it!

  6. Baby PacMan is so good, and the original game is so unique that I've thought for a while that @PacManPlus should scrub the PacMan out of it and release it on Steam for sale.  Anyone who has ever wanted to revisit the format would instantly recognize it, but it really could be cleaned up pretty easily to avoid a direct comparison to the original.

I started playing Fallout New Vegas last week and got much deeper in this week.  I actually started a new game on the so-called "hardcore" mode which doesn't change difficulty but forces you to eat, drink, and sleep.  I like managing that stuff better though - feels more like playing Wasteland or an older RPG.

  8. An end of an era, but I can see at least one explanation. The legal aspect of selling some of those games was always a little questionable (I think), and as the "retro" game market has gathered steam and become more profitable, the risks have likely increased.  My personal preference has always been original IP anyway.  Except for Baby Pac-Man.  That game is an incredible gift to the community.

Started playing this game this week on the 3DS.. it's definitely a good challenge! Almost beat the first level but died three times.

How do you get more lives though?

I beat levels 1 and 2.  There was an extra life on level 1 in the upper left corner of the screen where you start.  Once I played it a few times, I got it down to where I could clear level 1 (on normal) without dying.  I then beat level 2 on that same game, but then quickly got a game over on level 3.  Once you beat the boss and advance to the next level, the game let's you continue from there the next time you start (if you want).  It seems to require that strategy of repeating the level until you master it type of game loop.

I adjusted to using the "hover" ability heavily.  Once you are hovering with the jet pack, you can fly in any direction and you never run out of fuel.  That realization made things easier.

If you enjoy pick up and play games as I do, there’s the Sega Ages 2500 series of games that provide re-imaginings of various classic Sega arcade games with varying levels of quality.

Never heard of this one.  I will have to check it out.  I have gone through the process of Memory Card boot and installing a HD, so I should be able to get to this collection that way.

  11. So many of the great games (God of War, Ratchet and Clank, Lego Star Wars) can be found on successor systems.  It is sort of a shame in a way, but you can play A LOT of the great games from the PS2 library on a handful of other systems.  However, there are a few games where the license has prevented that from happening.  The original Guitar Hero games were only on PS2 and are still a treat to play today.  Although many of the songs from those versions were ported forward.  IMO the best James Bond games of all time were on PS2 in Everything or Nothing and From Russia with love.  You can also only find the ESPN NFL 2k Series on PS2 (and orig XBox).  I'll probably think of a few more.
