Intellivision HSC Season 18 - Game 5 - Ice Trek
wongojack replied to Rickster8's topic in Intellivision High Score Club
Thanks for getting this going. I'm not a big fan of this one, but I probably will kick in a score. -
Arcade Choplifter 5 Crystal Castles 9 Defender 27 Eyes 12 King and Balloon 5 Mushihimesama 4 Punch Out 6 Speed Buggy 8 Spy Hunter 17 Stun Runner 12 Super Dodge Ball 7 Time Traveller 4 DOS Tex Murphy: Mean Streets 75 I made my way to the latest location of the Free Play arcade chain here in Dallas. We are truly blessed with an embarrassment of arcade goodness here. Most arcade time above is from that visit, and I also played the below "modern" pinball machines while I was there. Free Play Dallas... (freeplayinc.com) Tex Murphy: Mean Streets was buried in my Steam library, and it fit my current pattern of playing games under 120mb. Mean Streets (as I knew it) is a game I played bitd. I remember a friend coming over and we installed it on the hard drive, so I could play after they left. Although, they must have left me the manual too because it is all very familiar. Anyway, I never really got deep into the game back then, so it is kind of nice to rediscover it now. PC Dead Man's Draw 35 PS4 Shovel Knight 107 XOne Bugsnax 54 Coffee Talk 25 Infernax 110 A little aimless wandering on various games this week. Infernax is now no longer available on GamePass, so I finally started playing Shovel Knight. First impression is that it is incredible. I'm excited to continue later. DOS Master of Orion 93 I'm continuing a cycle where I'm playing games <120mb from my Steam library, so I gave the DOS version of Master of Orion a shot. I have played this game before, but I've spent much more time in its cousin "Master of Magic." Anyway, it was nice to play a 4x game that really didn't require much of a tutorial. I didn't finish my introductory game, but I could have. Great series.

PC Dead Man's Draw 74 Floating Point 28 Hargrave 28 Monsters' Den: The Book of Dread 110 XOne Infernax 243 It Takes Two 101 Vampire Survivors 35 What to say here? I kept playing games that are smaller than ~120mb in my Steam library. Meanwhile, Infernax is a retro-styled platformer borrowing heavily from Castlevania. It is set to cycle out of GamePass soon, but I'm not sure I can finish in time.

Alcazar Appreciation Thread (with game tips)
wongojack replied to wongojack's topic in ColecoVision / Adam
@mufla No need for apologies. We like old threads here at AtariAge. I wish I knew the answer to your question about the Adam and MSX version. It would be fun to discover a different version of this game. I know there is a C64 version too. -
PC Gunmetal Arcadia Zero 31 Kung Fu Er San 16 Mini Ghost 41 Skool Daze Reskooled 20 Super House of Dead Ninjas 36 Tiltagon 5 Venture Kid 20 Way of the Pixelated Fist, The 37 XOne Vampire Survivors 26 I'm going through and playing games in my Steam library that are 120mb or less, so you see the results of that above. Favorites from the past week would be Super House of Dead Ninjas and Mini Ghost. SHDN is rogue-ish game where you descend floors and do ninja-y stuff, dying almost constantly. It's really good. Mini Ghost apparently is based on a metroid-like series originally on the MSX. The "mini" version is just that - small, but it was a really fun little game to explore and discover abilities etc.

Intellivision HSC Season 18 - Game 1 - River Raid
wongojack replied to Rickster8's topic in Intellivision High Score Club
I upped my score a little. It is hard to get used to the inertia of moving left to right in this version. It definitely seems different than other versions. -
I think that to destroy the gray ship, you have to slow down, but then speed up to get it in closer. I hit it in two different games and it turned to yellow. I guess it could have just been launching it's weapon, but I swear it actually turned yellow. Anyway, I think the trick is to vary speed to get it in range. There is definitely a way to kill it because the manual says you get a whopping 5000 points for destroying one.

I always thought the love scenes were weird too - even bitd when I didn't really know any better. The sequel has the advantage of having a coherent plot, but it borrows soooo heavily from the first movie that it is almost a re-make. Good thing they had access to the original soundtrack because it is used A LOT. I also kind of miss the second-hand embarrasment of the original love story because the love story in this movie could be dropped completely. It is so boring that you are just waiting for those scenes to be over. I won't mention my biggest comparison point between the two movies because it would spoil it, but I would just go into thinking more - "great flick" as opposed to "greatest sequel of all time."

DOS Commander Keen Complete Pack 20 I played this on Steam through DOS Box. I'm not sure when I got this, but I do have a few DOS Box games in my Steam library which is kinda dumb since those games are usually easy enough to find for free, and I'm familiar enough with DOS Box that I could just configure it myself. But hey-ho here we go, and I chose to fire this one up on the weekend. Technically, I played the first game in the Invasion of the Vorticons trilogy, but I believe the complete pack was its own retail release. I don't really know this series, and while I was playing DOS games in 1990, I don't know if this would have gotten my attention. I was really impressed with my brief time with it though and would like to spend more time in the future.

Catacombs of the Undercity is a storybook adventure. It plays like reading a choose your own adventure book where you do dice rolls to decide the outcomes of events. It is fun for a bit, and my wife and I like to play these occasionally (this is the 3rd one we've played) where I read them out loud while she's doing something else. It's kind of a fun thing to do together, but they really boil down to getting dice rolls, so even in my most patient and "follow the rules" mood, I eventually want to just retry a fight or a roll to see a better outcome. Good for what it is, and we did finish the story this weekend. I give it a 3/5

PC Annalynn 23 Black Jewel 11 Catacombs of the Undercity 205 Pong Quest 48 Tiltagon 9 Train Bandit 9 Zero Reflex 19 XOne Floppy Knights 60 I wrapped up Pong Quest early in the week and posted about it and Life is Strange here: https://forums.atariage.com/topic/346329-modern-games-beaten-in-2023/?do=findComment&comment=5195259. Short version: Pong Quest 2/5; Life is Strange 3/5. Honestly, I could be convinced to give Pong Quest a 1. It was more of a demo idea taken too far than an actual game IMO. What would you want to be able to buy from Atari…
wongojack replied to Giles N's topic in Atari General
I would love for Atari to make something I actually want to buy. I think mine would be: A 100% new 2600 portable, plays carts, has joystick ports and video out. So the thing could be a portable or a console and will play all my carts. I DO want it to play 7800 games too but would take only 2600. Heck - any quality made new version of the 2600 that plays all the carts would be incredible.- 304 replies

How come a lot getting into retro games skip Atari?
wongojack replied to totallyterrificpants's topic in Atari 2600
This thread got mentioned on another forum recently, so I went back to re-read. I think this post all the way on the front page pretty much nails it. Bold added for emphasis.
