Lets go through this, point by point, shall we?
1) Something revolutionary? What other consoles came close at the time other than the sms? How about things like the Rob Robot peripheral? I've never seen anything like it for another system....
2) The nes was one of the only systems to come through the crash. It enjoyed large amounts of popularity, even while the rest of the consoles fell back to earth. <-- I'd call that an interesting history.
3) Original and interesting games? I can think of quite a few. For me, while the concept of platform games was not new, Super Mario Brothers 3 blew away all competition at the time. I'd say that it was quite damn interesting. And extremely fun.
While it's a pain in the ass to get it to work half the time, it is in my mind a classic. The funny part is, when people say 'pre crash'/'post crash' determines what a console is. Really, that has no relevance anymore. Given that I was born in '83, I can't exactly remember the crash. As such, in defining a 'classic' system, one should simply ask 'is it still being sold/produced'? If it ain't being sold... it's a classic imho. (ie: dreamcast & ps1 are classics to my way of thinking, as is snes & mega drive)
