Different FujiNet performance on different machines
jamm replied to SS's topic in #FujiNet SIO Network Adapter
Yeah, I wondered about your shielding situation. Personally, I do almost all my work on an 800, which is as much of tank as the 400. -
Different FujiNet performance on different machines
jamm replied to SS's topic in #FujiNet SIO Network Adapter
If you're talking about the Internet connection to TNFS servers, then that's going to come down to WiFi performance. There's both signal strength and, separately, interference. I'm going to assume the different Ataris you're testing with are in the same room, so signal strength should be roughly the same (tell us if they're in different locations). In that case, my guess would be there's different radio interference levels between the small difference in location of the different machines. It's also possible each Atari is generating different levels of interference, although that seems less likely. I would try this: if you're consistently having a difficult time with FN plugged in to one Atari compared to another, try switching the location of the two Ataris and see if the problem is still consistent with the machine FN is pluggeg into or with the physical location where the FN is at. -
#FujiNet - ATX Protection Edge Cases, Information needed
jamm replied to tschak909's topic in #FujiNet SIO Network Adapter
So, I traced down the error we were all seeing: E (29223) diskio_sdmmc: sdmmc_read_blocks failed (257) Error 257 is an out of memory error. Accessing the SD card requires creating DMA buffers that use base memory, and we were running out of this. (This is why it didn't affect TNFS loads: those buffers aren't used in that case.) I've made a change that should address that particular issue. The update should be in the next firmware build. Note that if the error is something other than 257, then it's a different issue. -

Setting aside new games for the moment: Since this new VCS is just a Linux PC, it should trivially easy to get existing Linux-compatible games to run on it. There are well over 6,000 of these currently on Steam alone. Developers could get themselves on this exciting new platform with very little effort. We should see a bunch of 'conversions' of existing games (especially smaller ones) advertised for the new VCS. Where are they?

fujinet #FujiNet Testing and Bug Reporting Thread
jamm replied to tschak909's topic in #FujiNet SIO Network Adapter
Can you provide details on the SD cards you're using? Capacity, speed rating? -

This thread made more sense when we didn't have a dedicated subform for FujiNet. Maybe we should start creating individual threads for new bug reports? -

@8bitguy1 Your log shows SD error messages every attempt. It's possible there's corruption on the SD card. Do you have another one to try? Or at least format this one and try again? Also note that you'll probably need to reboot FN if you pull the card out and insert it back in for any reason. Not sure how well the firmware handles that situation. -
#FujiNet - ATX Protection Edge Cases, Information needed
jamm replied to tschak909's topic in #FujiNet SIO Network Adapter
Thanks for the log @8bitguy1 I see in your log that there's an error reading off of SD: [08:49:00]DiskTypeATX::_load_atx_data starting read [08:49:00]E (103322) diskio_sdmmc: sdmmc_read_blocks failed (257) [08:49:00]failed reading sector list chunk bytes (120, 5) [08:49:00]WARNING: Number of tracks read = 29 [08:49:00]ATX load completed Since it worked for me, I didn't notice that there's a similar but somehow different error in my own log when I tried it: 18:31:08.905 > DiskTypeATX::_load_atx_data starting read 18:31:09.030 > E (29223) diskio_sdmmc: sdmmc_read_blocks failed (257) 18:31:09.030 > failed reading 2304 sector data chunk bytes (368, 5) 18:31:09.031 > WARNING: Number of tracks read = 27 18:31:09.033 > ATX load completed So that's something to dig into. Maybe we're getting a read error off of SD for some reason and ending up with potentially random data. Thanks again for collecting the details! -
#FujiNet - ATX Protection Edge Cases, Information needed
jamm replied to tschak909's topic in #FujiNet SIO Network Adapter
I was able to load both ATX images from either TNFS or SD without issue. At this point, I think we'd need a complete debug log from your FujiNet to try and determine what's going on in your case. FYI: I'm testing on an 800 with Incognito in XL mode with 64K RAM. -

There should be no difference. I'll test it out when I get a chance. -
I’m confident that if it weren’t encrypted and tied to Apple’s hardware, someone would’ve already created an Airdrop app for Android.

I tested both the 1983 and 1985 versions from the January 2020 "8Bit Preserved Software" archive and didn't have a problem. Please provide more details if you still can't get it working. -
Feature proposal for FUJINET to download firmware updates
jamm replied to gs80065xe's topic in #FujiNet SIO Network Adapter
@Kyle22 You're running one of the world's least secure and most malware-targeted 32-bit operating systems. You're not doing yourself any favors staying on it. If you're really concerned about security, go with one of the more secure Linux distributions. There you'll have current support and patches and also be able to run many legacy Win32 programs via WINE. No one is ignoring Windows XP out of spite. The tools to support it have been either deprecated or outright unsupported by Microsoft for years, so anyone wanting to support it would have to go though (oftentimes significant) extra effort to do so. We need to spend our very limited programming resources on FujiNet. -

retrotink 2x RetroTink 2X Pro: Fantastic!
jamm replied to tschak909's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
I have both and would just get the Mini unless you foresee other uses for it. -
retrotink 2x RetroTink 2X Pro: Fantastic!
jamm replied to tschak909's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
If you're TV has decent built-in analog-to-digital conversion and an SVideo input, then you may not really benefit from a RetroTink. It almost certainly introduces less lag than whatever your TV does (RT is basically lag-less) and probably handles certain video modes used in video games better, but neither of those may be very important for Atari 8-bit users. Those features are critical for some dedicated games consoles, though. It's not going to fix bad video output from your Atari. It's just going to do a better job of taking whatever your Atari puts out and displaying it on your TV than most any other solution under $300. -
retrotink 2x RetroTink 2X Pro: Fantastic!
jamm replied to tschak909's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
There's been pretty well universal praise for the RetroTink. Whatever's going on in these recent posts isn't endemic to the device (except that there's no native Mac firmware updater). On top of that, the creator seems to be a genuinely great guy. (But he *is* just one guy, and not part of some larger company.) Personally, I have no problem recommending the RT devices. -
retrotink 2x RetroTink 2X Pro: Fantastic!
jamm replied to tschak909's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
If you have the audio output from the Atari connected to the RetroTink, then the sounds should be getting channeled through the HDMI output to your TV. -
Yep - this is the only reason that makes sense. They're trying to buy time to get the software done. At least done enough where it doesn't immediately fall apart.

retrotink 2x RetroTink 2X Pro: Fantastic!
jamm replied to tschak909's topic in Atari 8-Bit Computers
FWIW I tried the Mini on the same set up I have the Pro installed on. No obvious differences, but I don't have the equipment to do a side-by-side comparison: I just tried one after the other. -
"I'm going to show you something very special... this is a low end Linux PC... amazing, right?" Nice that there's proof of at least one 3rd party dev receiving hardware, though. At this rate, they should have a few games ready for the holiday season in 2021.
