    Vectrex lightpen with buttons

    Hi Guys!

     

    After some time, after I learned some other useful things like how to design the PCB's in KiCad and how to make vector images in InkScape for laser cutting, I have made the Vectre Lightpen with buttons 2.0. 🙂

    The basic concept is the same (it is derived from old "version C") but since now I can use PCB's instead prototyping boards and laser cut acrylic sheets instead drilling into the generic project box, the assembling is a bit easier and faster.

     

    The changes/improvements comparing to the old design are:

    1. Most of the electronic component were moved from the pen into the connection box (the box where all the cables meet) so it allowed me to use the thinner cable (since less wires are needed) for the pen itself so it is more flexible and feels better when moving the pen around while drawing

    2. Plastic joystick connector instead the metal one: metal connectors are often "shaving" the edges of the plastic connector when not inserted straight, and black connector looks more compatible with the vintage console

    3. The connection box is made by laser cut acrylic sheet. Because I have used simple assembling with just bottom and top sheet, the inside of the box is exposed which some people might not like, but on the other hand the black acrylic is much more shiny and I could also laser engrave my logo into it. 🙂 The PCB in the box is black so it fits nicely visually.

     

    I have used metal spacers and bolts to add some weight to the box so that it sits more nicely on the table.

     

    I have to make slight changes in the PCB and box design based on the experience with assembling the first batch, after that I will publish on github all the files I have used to build it if somebody would like to build his own (you will still have to find the pen shell to fit into). For those who do not feel skilled to build their own I will sell a few either completely assembled, or probably also some cheaper partially assembled. Unlike with the old pen I will not anymore issue the certificate of authenticity or out serial numbers on it.

     

    I will as with the old version make also few red coloured version of the lightpen.

    Hubtrex pedal (and whatever other) switch passthrough "hub"

    Hi guys!

    Let me share with you my latest build. It is inspired by MiniVex Pedal controller but I have decided to take a bit different route so I do not just mechanically copy someones work and design.

    So when looking for a suitable pedal that I could use for it I have found out that many keyboard sustain pedals (sustain pedals can be either normally opened or normally closed but most of them have switch which allows selection between the two) and switch pedals for tattoo equipment are using 6.3 jack connectors, so I have decided to put 8 jack connectors for 4 fire buttons and all 4 directions so that one can use whatever pedal(s) (or any other switch, if prefered one can install switch on the forehead and activate it by banging against the wall 😅) and how many he likes to control either fire or direction with the feet (or any other part of the body as mentioned above). It has a passthrough for the joystick. I have named it "Hubtrex" because it reminds me of a network hub although is not quite a hub, but haven't got anything more clever into my mind.

    I have bought 2 low profile switches from tattoo equipment shop to test it with and it works. But I haven't played much yet, its more fun for me to build things than play games. 🙂

    It would be IMHO quite nice for the games like Hyperchase to controll break and acceleration with the feet... What do you think which game could benefit by using this device? 🙂

    For sale is a Nintendo SNES super Famicom controller modded for Vectrex.

    Cleaned, but some scratches present due to the previous usage.

    Button X  - blue     Fire 3

    For use only on Vectrex, will not work on other systems!
    This is a digital controller, which means that few games that require analog joystick (like Hyperchase) will not work properly.

    Was thinking about that but I have found this box just few fays ago and I do not have a propper sticker printed for the lid, I do not have I time to order it since auction is ending soon. I do not want to ruin it with some lazy diy bubble jet print.

    But I can provide some extra stickers used for the pen since I have a bunch I will not use, so you can stick it on the box if you think it is suitable.

    Hi. For sale is a refurbished genuine Vectrex controller.

    Fully working. New centering springs and new rubber legs (transparent) installed and cleaned. Cable and connector in good condition.

    Unfortunately somebody was trying to repair it unprofessionally before by trying to pry it with the screwdriver and have made a scratches and dents in the gap between two halves, I have tried as much as I could to sand these dents out. Also the front right corner was snapped but have glued it, so it is firm now and will not snap further. The bottom contains lots of fine scratches due to the usage without rubber legs. The price is 85€ with the postage to anywhere included.

    Well the cables are the same. The C has controller port built in into the box where cables split, so you can plug your controller into it and use simultaneously the pen and controller (for selecting an option from the multicart menu, or just to have both plugged all the time without need to switch them).

    By the way, I am sending everything from the EU, so no customs, taxes or any other fees for EU citizens.
