  1. I too had the same exact problem. My boot was already off the CX40 joystick when I received my Atari 2600 from a friend. You can use a butter knife to push the ring up (if it's up) and to hold it up so you can get the sides of the boot under the ring. It's kind of hard to explain, but I'll give you the directions Best-Electronics gave me when I contacted them via e-mail. This may or may not help you, and this is word for word their instructions, not mine. I'd use a butter knife instead of a sharp knife so you don't poke/rip the boot. I did contact them again and thanked them for their time in helping me. Take a sharp knife tip and wedge it under the round Joystick ring that looks like part of the CX40 Molded top assembly. Another way is to take off the CX40 top case and look for the CX40 boot ring locking tabs that come thru the inside of the CX40 top case, at 12 Noon and 6 PM locations. Push on or more of those locking tabs and the thin CX40 boot Ring will pop off the CX40 top surface just a little. If you need photos, please let me know.
  2. Working on cleaning the 1978 Atari 2600 that was given to me, and finding out I need new parts inside the CX40 joystick, including a new PCB board.

Excuse me for swearing in the church, but is a CX-40 worth repairing from a game playing perspective?

@carlsson - I enjoy replacing things that are broken, including joysticks or anything that has to do with gaming, it's almost like a hobby for me. It's something I don't have to do, but I enjoy doing it. Thanks for the comment.

  3. I've always liked games by Konami, especially their handheld electronic games from back in the day, games like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Top Gun, Blades of Steel, and my favorite, Double Dribble. Fun times on long car rides.
  4. I hope the Ataribox succeeds, because I think it'll help the whole retro gaming wave that's currently going on. I don't think it'll be as popular as the NES classic mini or the SNES classic mini, both by Nintendo, but It'll be nice to see it do well... I hope, especially if they promote it right. Hopefully it'll be capable of playing all original Atari 2600 games. From what I've read, it'll play 100+ games. I wonder if they'll have something like Xbox Live, where you can purchase video games via Internet connection. That would be nice. I currently have an Atari 2600 (1978), original model, so I'll be sticking with that, because it works for me, but it'll be good to see the younger generation become interested in the Ataribox, or anyone else for that matter. I'm probably in the minority, but I do like the design of the Ataribox (wood grain), especially its size. It looks like it has a modern look with a touch of Atari retro as well. I also like how it lights up in the front.
  5. Update: (11/8/17) - I decided to stick with the gold plated F-connector, coax- male to RCA Female and my Atari 2600 works great with a clear picture, with no lines or interference. I didn't need the RF interference Filter. RF cable from the Atari 2600 to the TV works great and so does the power plug. I’m a new member and have a few questions about the better connection (without soldering) for the Atari 2600 (original model with wood grain) model CX-2600 from 1978. I have a 2012 Samsung HD TV w/ 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratio. Which is the better connection (picture, sound etc) the RF interference Filter (w/ gold plated F-connector, coax- male to RCA Female) or the Commodore 64 & 128 RF cable high performance shielded/grounded? Can this even go with the Atari 2600? The thickness of the RF cable/cord might be too large for the inside of the Atari 2600 (where the original RF cable/cord goes in) or it might not go with the system at all. Is there any grounded shielded cable/cord that I can use for the Atari 2600, better than the RF Interference Filter? I could just use the gold plated F-connector (coax) male to RCA Female and hook it via coaxial. I have read conflicting stories that the RF interference filter makes things better and sometimes there’s no difference. I also have a good working RF cable/cord. I’m new to all this, so my apologies if I’ve worded something incorrectly. Thank you. PS photos enclosed for better explanation.

@save2600 - Ha! Thanks. The Atari 2600 was given to me in great condition, just upgrading some parts due to normal wear.
