S-video terminal purchase for use with Bryan's UAV Rev. D
Amerika replied to Amerika's topic in Atari 7800
I just got the last piece I needed to install the UAV and so I did that today. I have a couple of questions though about the output. Here is an album with some pictures of my work: https://photos.app.goo.gl/LZnHmVqegD2utDpH9 What I ended up doing was placing the UAV where the RF modulator was as I had previously removed it. The circular hole for the RF cable worked perfectly for the s-video jack that I got from console5. I only had to file out a small amount on both sides to make the jack fit perfectly and the nut/washer goes on with plenty of room. And it looks like it was always meant to be there. Since I already had a composite mod installed that had supposedly perfect audio for any games that used the extra sound chip, I left the audio portion of it hooked up. So I'm using the composite and s-video from the UAV but the sound from the other mod chip. It seems to work just fine. However, I have a few questions about my video capture and the audio. Here is a video of my capture using s-video. I noticed that the lines that should be within the darker green is missing. Those missing details are there on my CRT but it's not there in my capture. I am using an internal Micomsoft card and I have no issues picking up a perfect capture with my other s-video consoles. So I am wondering if there is some kind of adjustment I might need to make. If you look at the last picture in my album, you can see what the game looks like on my TV to compare to how it looks in the video. Also, how is the audio balance? The guns sound a bit louder than the music and it sounds fine to me but I am not sure if that is how it's supposed to sound or not. I could still hook up the UAV's sound if the mix is off with my old mod. Thanks everyone! -

That is a really good idea! I am fairly happy with the composite that is in it right now but I can't help but think the colors are a bit off even after doing quite a bit of adjusting with the color pots for the 7800 and 2600 sides. I can do as you said and record my current composite mod to use for comparison later, remove it temporarily, hook up the UAV, record and then see what I like better. I did already remove the RF modulator and I am not using that space so I could use that area for the S-video hookup. I'll try that! I ended up ordering a couple of different types of s-video jacks to see which I like/works best. The timing worked out pretty well since I needed to order some SMD caps for a Genesis mod anyway. Thanks again for everyone's input and suggestions! -

Hrm, I did remove the RF box. I could use that area as well if I didn't want to touch the RCA jacks. Bryan did say that what I've done with the composite mod won't affect the s-video mod due to where it pulls the audio/video. Does anybody know if I could leave my current mod alone, install the s-video mod but only hook up the s-video portion of it and still have both RCA composite and S-video? That would be easier and the unit would be a bit more versatile. I'm just spitballing and if I opened it up to track things down I might find that is a bad idea...but I figured one of you might already have experience/expertise in that area beyond my own. -

This actually turned into an interesting topic and I do appreciate the responses! I already composite modded my 7800 and it works great but s-video would work with my capture chain better and of course it would look nicer as well. I didn't do a lot of research on where to place the plugs outside of just making my own measurements and considering aesthetics I was personally OK with. I plan on re-purposing the area where the Yellow jack is and placing the S-video jack there. Hell, now that I think about it, I could probably simply wire up on the video part of the s-video mod and leave the audio part of my old one alone (it has Pokey hooked up and mixed correctly). Or is that a bad idea? Anyway, this is where my jacks are placed. I'd have embedded the image with a spoiler tag but I apparently am not ranked high enough to post pictures as I kept getting an error saying I am not allowed. https://i.imgur.com/o0422oW.jpg -

Thank you very much. That is exactly what I was looking for and I didn't know the proper search term which was making it hard to find anything relevant. -
I know this is a dumb question but I am having a hell of a time finding the terminal I need to purchase for Bryan's s-video mod for my 7800. The only thing I can find is this guy. I'd much rather find one that is a bit smaller and lets me simply drill a hole for the jack, tighten it down and solder on the wires just like I did for the RCA jacks. Does anybody have a recommendation?

So, I found this video when searching Bryan's post so that I could read up on the UAV a bit and to see what is in the new revision. I believe it was a video made by Crossbow (excellent job explaining btw). It would appear that the colors being shown on the finished s-video mod actually match my own almost perfectly. So, I guess that is accurate? It's odd that other screenshots and videos I've seen have vastly different coloring. Even if that is the case, I would still be interested in the UAV as s-video would play much nicer with my capture chain. I could definitely hold out for the new revision since it seems like my setup is mostly fine now. What are the updates to the new revision? I failed to find out any info on it. I did this composite mod almost to the letter: http://vintagegamingandmore.com/installation-guide-7800/ Am I going to have any issues installing the UAV? As in, will I need to replace R3 and R5 that I cut out? Or the c10 cap I removed to pull my pokey audio (with a 6.8k resistor for hopefully proper mixing)? It's not a big deal if I need to but what I did might not be included in any UAV install instructions. Speaking of UAV install instructions, are there any handy I could read? The thread I linked didn't actually have much for instruction despite the name! Sorry for the ignorance and the questions. I've searched to answer my own questions but I keep coming up with either very little or conflicting info. I really appreciate you guys taking the time to assist me here. I've really been enjoying my 7800 (and 2600 games on it too). Way more than I ever thought I would despite growing up with an NES and only playing a 2600 a few times as a kid.

Oh, weird. On OBS it was dark but not that dark. I never checked what it looked like on YT before posting as I thought it would be similar to what I saw on OBS which is traditionally darker than what the video ends up looking like on YT. But, you're right, it's way too dark to see so my apologies. My TV is much brighter and looks totally fine. It's an CRT (32" WEGA 60hz). I looked up the UAT mod but I don't know where to buy the board/parts outside of contacting Bryan on this site. Which I did but I have not heard back (it was only a week ago). I would gladly rip out my composite mod and install the UAV if I can get my hands on a board.

I would most definitely be interested in this!

Hello! So I recently modded my Atari 7800 with composite out and everything seems to have gone well except for the colors. I've adjusted the pot and I just can't seem to dial in anything that looks correct compared to videos I've seen on Youtube or Google images. This is the mod I am using. Here is a video of some capture from my system. I adjust the pot during the demo playthrough to show everything. The video is darker than what my TV shows so don't worry about that. It's just the colors don't seem to match up with most everything I've seen. Does anybody have a good idea what might be causing this? Or is this just what is expected with a composite mod and some 7800's? Thanks! Michael

This is the mod that I used: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Atari-2600-7800-A-V-Composite-RCA-Audio-Video-Mod-Kit-NEW-amp-IMPROVED-KIT-1G-/311705759237?&_trksid=p2056016.l4276 Hopefully that was a good one to get. I couldn't find much that seemed accurate in regards to mods being good/bad so I sort of threw a dart. I also modded an 7800 with the same kit and it looks great besides a bit of vertical banding with some colors that I don't think I can get rid of (almost every video I've seen of a 7800 has something similar). I might make a post with video at some point in the future here for that topic though. I would definitely appreciate the sharing of any results that you get as I wouldn't mind trying a few things to bring this 2600 back to where it should be. It would hurt to throw it in a closet I thought about trying something basic like this little kit: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Atari-2600-CX2600A-4-SWITCH-TUNE-UP-PARTS-VOLTAGE-REGULATOR-1-Amp-CAPACITORS-/311645406414?_trksid=p5731.m3795 But I have a feeling that the issue isn't something basic.

Hello! I recently acquired an Atari 2600 4 switch "Woody" and I was told by the guy that the machine was stuck in Black & White mode. I didn't think much of this as I figured it would be an easy fix due to switch being stuck or faulty or the potentiometer being out of wack. Welp, I was wrong! The switch is just fine and it does swap between what appears to be black & white mode and color as the image does change and the potentiometer doesn't do anything while in B&W mode. And speaking of the pot, adjusting it will modify the image but color is never seen. The image always stays black and white. I then thought that it might just be the RF connection. I had already purchased an composite mod so I went ahead and installed it hoping that bypassing the RF connection would bring back color. Nope! The image is nice and clean but it's still only in black and white. I have also tried on multiple TV's (two CRT's and an LCD). I tried searching google and this forum and I never found anything definitive. Is this a known issue with a specific fix or does anybody happen to have an idea of how I can track down the problem? I am fairly good at soldering and I can use a multimeter.

Hrm, I swore I already replied to this but either it didn't go through or I forgot to submit! Anyway, a good use case for this would be speed runners wanting to copy over save states from an emulator they have been practicing on in order to re-run areas for practice or make splits on real hardware easier. Another use case for read only states is any game that doesn't have a level select. Save states could fix that particular issue and could be easily passed around the community to be used for those who want them. So read only save states could be quite handy for a number of people!
