Issue with Atari Jaguar CD (disc with a question mark)
SparkTR replied to Talitor's topic in Atari Jaguar
It could also be the quality of the replacement disc drive, I went through about 3 of them before I found one that worked well. I also recapped the CD unit which seemed to help relaibility. If all else fails, get the upcoming Phode ODE, which will replace the optical drive with an SD card to launch games. -
Perfect! Thanks!

Intellivision Amico’s trademark changed to ‘abandoned’
SparkTR replied to rietveld's topic in Modern Gaming Discussion
The issue with console projects like these is that good games, regardless if they're retro inspired or not, cost significant money to develop these days. And especially for retro inspired products, the market for them is on Steam/PSN/XBL/Switch. A new console will never attract marketshare comparable to these behemoths and thus never attract the development talent. And the truth is why should it? The current gen aforementioned platforms cover literally all the use cases a gamer could want these days, even lapsed older gamers nostalgic about the good old days will find them a million times more intuitive to use than whatever cheap experience these scam boxes will churn out. -
Intellivision Amico’s trademark changed to ‘abandoned’

As I understand it, they targeted out of touch older people who hadn't played a videogame console since the Atari days, and thus didn't understand the modern gaming landscape. To us it looked that an android box that had weak off the shelf hardware. To them it looked like a family friendly system that was free from scandalous games like GTA and brought back the simplicity and innocence of the 80s (despite retro inspired indie games being a thing, but out of touch people wouldn't know this). -

Not sure if old news, but Earthworm Jim 4 has been cancelled. https://www.thegamer.com/earthworm-jim-4-cancelled/ -
Rich posted on the patreon that the surgery was a success and he will be recovering while he waits for biopsy results in 6 weeks. He also intends to continue working on the emulator during that time. As an aside, please consider subscribing to the patreon as I assume the medical fee's are not cheap.

I would love to get my hands on one. I assume they'll be up for sale again soon.

Sorry I have no pics. I bought this kit from Console5 and replaced all the electrolytic capacitors on the circuit board (they look like this) with the ones supplied in the kit. There's roughly 8 of them I think. It's a fairly easy job, just heat up the solder attaching the legs of the capacitors to the board, suck it out using a solder sucker and then carefully pull out the capacitor. Replace it with the new one, and be sure to keep the polarity (positive and negative) the same.

The rubber mounts can be found on Aliexpress, but I can't find the link. Also consider recapping the CD unit, I went through around 4 CD drives before realizing the issue was the caps. The CD unit will never work if the caps are bad.

Astrocade S-VIDEO Adapter available again
SparkTR replied to 128Kgames's topic in Bally Arcade/Astrocade
Hi, any update with the reliability of this mod? -
The issue was 100% the caps. My unit has been working 100% fine with even the flimsiest looking CD mechanism from Ebay. If anyone has a troublesome CD unit that periodically stops reading discs even after a laser change, it's likely the caps.

One service states that 2D sidescrolling games will have a slight stutter on 60hz modified Jag consoles, particularly if you use it through an upscaler/linedoubler. That is typical of 50hz > 60hz console versions if you don't install a dual frequency oscillator. unfortunately nobody has programmed a DFO for the Jag yet. I have one installed is my PS1 and Saturn, very easy mod to do.

So I'm picking this up again, three months later! I'm thinking my issue lies with the capacitors and possibly the Bios chip. I'm going to replace both of those. Does anyone have experience with bad caps on the Jag CD? Could they be causing disc read errors? I also noticed the Bios chip on my Jag CD is socketed. I thought they came soldered direct to the board?

An update to my Jag CD situation. Turns out I was having multiple issues. The OSSC wasn't playing nice with my RGB Scart cable, causing desyncs that I wrongly associated with the disc drive. My old power supply was insufficient, leading to wavy lines on screen and likely other issues. My old CD burner was producing coasters, I bought a nice $150 Blu-ray burner than can go down to x4 speeds and almost every disc works now. So basically, make sure you buy good quality products in general, because a cheapo burner, power supply and scart cable can be the difference between a working Jag CD and an expensive doorstop. I'll see how it fares tomorrow.

Still interested. Can't hurt to have this AND a GD!
-
Yeah the JagGD will be the future of Jaguar CD games, thank god. This project is more of a matter of ego for me right now haha. I've fixed all sorts of consoles including finicky CD ones like the CD32, but this has me stumped.

Sweet, I'll give your recommendations a shot. I'm already using Taiyo Yuden CDRs and a $50 LG burner. I've also tried at least 6 different laser mechanisms now haha, with one more on the way. A few didn't work at all, one I had to adjust the pot and a couple worked but would start to fail trying to use it a day or so later even though nothing had changed. Potential point of failure I've identified are the JST-PHR-6 and cables are super brittle from all the soldering they've been through, so I'm making new ones. I noticed the Jag CD power supply is a Norcom 1.0A which doesn't look official, so I'm buying a new one. And I'm getting a decent Blu Ray burner, I've read blue ray burners produce more consistent CDR burns.
