Super Metroid, for the first time. Fun game, but a little disappointingly easy. Finished in 9:20, with 80% collection.

And I'm stripping off the header with a text editor to create the binary; does that work?
If you're just removing/altering bytes, use a hex editor; my favorite is XVI (for Windows).
Also, the music is totally rad. Brings back fond memories! *sniffle*

Actually, I was able to hack the Invision form. It doesn't like it if you put a number that's not in the drop down, though.
These will work:
http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?a...;max_results=10
http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?a...;max_results=20
http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?a...;max_results=30
and these will break (in a rather amusing way, in my opinion):
http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?a...p;max_results=1
http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?a...p;max_results=5
Apparently it just checks for $_REQUEST instead of $_POST (I don't commend that practice, for just this reason, although this is fairly harmless). Of course, you'll have to bookmark these links, as clicking on the "Blogs" link will still just take you to the index with a default of 20.

This might help:
if you need help with the MIDI file format. It's something I wrote a while ago when I was under the influence of my hex editing obsession.

Very awesome.

Possibly The Secret of Monkey Island for PC. My brother, sister and I used to team up on those old Lucasarts adventure games!
I had almost the same experience, except I don't have any sisters. It was probably either Monkey Island or The Legend of Zelda for NES. I didn't really start beating games until I was in college and had a lot more time on my hands to actually finish games. The first game that I actually remember beating was Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure for Genesis, when I broke my collarbone in 6th grade.

That is an interesting wiki. I still think it's weak.
-
I consider the act of saving pieces until you're ready for them weak, regardless of context. Takes away from the randomness of the game, and that's what Tetris is all about (well, besides skill and reflex and puzzle solving and foresight and hand-eye coordination and...).
Certainly an impressive video, though.
-
That's kind of a weak version Tetris; he's "saving" the long pieces until he's ready. Pretty cool, though. You can actually do-it-yourself and watch other's do-it-themselves on this version of flash tetris here. If you can last more than a minute on the death, mirrored, flipped mode, I'm impressed.

The scores at TG are really weak; I was kinda surprised.
I was too, until I realized that you can only use five lives total, meaning you can only die five times. Still, if you're good at the game, you really shouldn't have any trouble beating every level with just five lives.

Hmmm... Clearly, I need to invest in some PS RPGs, as I have not tasted the sweetness of its honey. Or something. I didn't realize they were so plentiful. Thanks for the lists!
-
What are other RPGs on the PlayStation besides the Final Fantasies? I can't think of any; I seem to recall that there were a lot of PS RPGs released in Japan that weren't released in the US. edit: Chrono Cross is one, I guess.
Anyway, I would have to say SNES. It definitely had a more dynamic library than any of the other platforms, with games like Final Fantasy V, The 7th Saga, Terranigma, Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, etc. The other platforms just don't have that kind of variety.

I was wondering if you would join us this week.
Heh. I was pretty sure I could blow all of you out of the water, but that wouldn't be very nice.
Actually, I was just curious how long the record-holder had to play to get that score. I was going to play for a couple hours to see if I could beat it, but eh; Contra the 3rd-4th-5th-10th time through just gets more and more boring. Particularly when you're doing it in one sitting. And I got really pissed every time I lost my Spread. -
I don't normally like playing games for high scores, but Contra is fun, so I did. I don't have a screenshot, because I couldn't steal my roommate's camera because I couldn't find it (selfish piece of crap). But the final score was
1,539,700
I got bored after the second time through, and I had about 15 or so guys in reserve. I guess the TG record-holder played through about 10 times to get a score of 6 million. I played for about 40 minutes, so the world record probably took 4-5 hours. That's a lot of Contra.

Not sure what exactly you're looking for, but this tool translates a MIDI file into an editable text file and back:
I've used it before, and it works fairly well, if you can figure it out. What are you trying to do? Because the MIDI file format is pretty simple, and it wouldn't be that hard to write your own MIDI parser (I wrote one in PHP to generate the MIDI files for my little musical experiment). Here's a good place to find the MIDI specs, if you're so inclined.

Does the American version of this game have the same awesome music as the Japanese version? Because I think this game has some of the best NES music of all time.
The answer is a resounding "no." The Japanese music is the bomb:

You know, Pitfall! (the original) is a minigame in Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure, so theoretically, all of those votes could be transferred with no harm done.
Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure holds special nostalgic sentiment for me: it was one of my first Genesis games, and I beat it when I stayed home from school for a week with a broken collarbone. I also played it quite a bit recently...

Here's a video of some dude beating Gradius (.wmv):
http://vortiginous.com/vids/shiner-gradius-directors-cut.zip
The final score was 671,500. He missed 16 enemies. It even has some vaguely humorous nerd humor in it.
"It's somethin' to shoot for, Carl."

Of course, I cast another vote for Top Gun

According to this guy, you're the only one who's ever cast a vote for Top Gun.

Heh. I haven't played this game in a while. I'm not really a big fan of playing Tetris for a high score; I'm all about survival and longevity. That said, this game bores me after 10 consecutive minutes.

There's a video of the 800k game on archive. It's pretty awesome:
http://www.archive.org/details/TETRIS_NES_800K
He starts on level 18 (hold A when you select your level) and ends with 224 lines on level 28.
-
He's also responsible for the weirdest game of all time: A Boy and His Frickin' Blob (not Atari 2600, though).

I'm impressed that Rocket Knight Adventures is up there. I didn't think anyone knew about that game. I don't know if it deserves to be on a top 10 list (unless it's a list of top 10 games featuring a rocket-powered possum), but it is fairly fantastic.

Best NES Series. Ever.

I was severely disappointed by the lack of Zelda (that would've been my vote), until I read the first post.
I vote for Mega Man. Super Mario Bros. 3 is probably one of the best games for any system, but the other two are nothing special, not to mention that SMB2 is just a sprite hack of Doki Doki Panic. Plus, that game is kind of creepy.
The Mega Man games were all the same, but they were all the same awesome. And no game had better sprites than Mega Man, or music, or boss names (Wood Man, Hard Man, Elec Man, Bomb Man, Fire Man, Snake Man, the list goes on). And of course, Mega Man's real name is Rockman, and his sister's name is Roll, so that makes them Rock and Roll.
You can't make this stuff up.
