    Atarimusicology

Of course! Yup. The main difference between this and the first applet I showed you is that I didn't want to work hard enough to make the first one cool. Then when I started looking at the charts in greater depth, I realized that it could be much better (i.e. more useful) than it was. As it is, the new applet isn't real helpful to anyone who doesn't understand music, but I really only wrote it for myself, as an experiment. Thanks, although I don't know anything about 2600 programming. And honestly, it's not really meant for other people to use; it was more of a diversion for me (I didn't really make it very user friendly, so it's probably a little cryptic to anyone who's not me). That's kind of what I was trying to accomplish, but it's more of a general solution. This won't give you the key you should compose in, you have to figure that out for yourself (which is why it's not very user friendly). I suppose I could actually implement key-recognition, but only if someone really wanted me to. That bit about "sounding" out of tune is kind of what interested me in the music of the 2600 in the first place. The sporadic frequencies of the pitches force you to be creative. It's hard to visualize what may or may not sound good. That's what this applet helps do.
  2. You mean, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies?
  3. It's not Atari, and it's not me, but it is Mega Man.

    2600 Music Helps

That would be pretty dope, although from what I understand of the 2600's limitations, something like that would be a little dubious when it comes to playing in tune. Since the frequencies of each pitch all vary (i.e. very few of the notes are at perfect pitch), playing on a keyboard wouldn't necessarily be the best representation of what the 2600 could do. And you'd also need to be a pro at transposing. But yes, it would definitely be the bomb if it were possible. Nope. In fact, if anybody really cares, I put them all on my webspace so I could look at them easier every time you told me they sound bad. Here they are: http://www.wou.edu/~tmontg1/MetroidMusic/JPEGs/
  5. Source, although it was several months ago, and no doubt hideous: http://www.wou.edu/~tmontg1/atari/PlayFieldEditor/Source/ I had five classes: one for the main applet, one for the import window, one for the code window, one for the color window, and one for the help window. For real giggles, check out the giant, disgusting method I wrote for the import function. Whoever can decipher that madness gets a very big cookie. Aspect ratio... I know very little about programming (just enough from vdub_bobby so that I could write this thing), so I'm going to need more elaboration. Sorry.
  6. Kraid's Area was definitely one of my favorite video game tunes of all time. However, now that I've been learning/arranging all the Metroid tunes, there are some lesser known tunes that are quite excellent. For example, the escape and ending tunes are pretty awesome, especially the ending, after you beat the game. For the curious, here's some cheesy MIDIs: Cheesy Metroid MIDIs!
  7. I want to join the party! I wrote another crappy (maybe not?) little applet a while ago to accomplish this: Warning! Math major trying to do computer science! http://www.wou.edu/~tmontg1/atari/PlayFiel...ieldEditor.html
  8. Always nice to see some Crystalis love. For NES, I think Super Mario Bros. 2 and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link were a few games that were vastly underappreciated in their time (although it seems that Zelda 2 is catching on to be not the piece of crap everyone thought it was). Both games were just different than the originals, so they got slandered pretty hard. Both were very creative for their time. They're probably my favorite two for both series. Also, for SNES, Darius Twin and Killer Instinct don't seem to get the respect they deserve. Darius gets my vote just because you keep your freaking weapon upgrades even when you die, and that's a huge replay factor for me. I really don't hear anything about this game. Killer Instinct was the first fighting game I played that had combos that were more than a few hits. And there's so much more to this game after you master it (like figuring out how the 40-hit combos and stuff). Killer Instinct (although I believe it was pretty popular in the arcade) never got much attention (that I'm aware of) on the SNES.

    Fun for the whole family!

Hey! Just remember who is the M-4 master...
  10. I read somewhere that the probability of getting any particular piece is dependent on how many times you rotate it (previously). For example, you're more likely to get anything more often than a box because you never have to rotate a box. I don't know if it's true or not.
  11. If I leave, will you practice? And I've been playing Super Mario Bros. 3 like I'm worried that someone is going to steal one or both of my SMB3 cartridges and donate them to a Goodwill. So, NES for me, although my newly acquired Super Mario All-Stars has helped to keep my SNES warm, as well (thanks skunkworx).
  12. They don't care about me? I agree with everything you said except this. Most "hard-core" gamers, i.e. people who like playing video games more than modding their console, seem to be more interested in the Revolution than either XBOX 360 or PS3, since Nintendo has outspokenly stated that they are creating a console specifically for people who play video games. I don't see that failing anymore than the 360 has failed. Most people aren't going to buy just one next generation system, yourself included. And with all the hype that Twilight Princess has accumulated since being pushed back 6 months, I don't think Zelda and Link are going anywhere. I really don't understand why people think the Revolution is going to fail so hard. It's (supposedly going to be) cheaper, it's new, and it's (definitely) different. What's not to like?
  13. What about the time you maliciously attacked someone you don't know over the internet after he already apologized and explained himself? St. Peter probably won't commend you on a job well done.
  14. There seems to be an interesting definition of platformers going around. I normally wouldn't consider games like Flashback, Bubble Bobble, Kid Icarus, Zelda II, etc. to be platformers. Flashback's controls make jumping difficult, Bubble Bobble is a single room full of bubbles and fruit, and Zelda II has platforms, but it's definitely an adventure game more than a platformer. I always considered a platformer to be a game where you're suspended above an infinite cliff, and you jump on platforms, and avoid huge holes. Like Mario and Mega Man. Sometimes you have a mustache. Sometimes you're bare-chested (Contra).
  15. Who are these Mario fanboys? Everyone I've ever talked to thinks the same thing: that Mario is a little too visible. I think people keep buying games because they like video games, not because of any erotic feelings they might have for misshapen polygons.
  16. I'm not sure if you guys are aware of this, but this site is devoted to what you guys are doing. They've modified emulators (like adding rerecording support and frame advance, for example) for NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, and others to create "tool-assisted speedruns." Some of the coders there might be able to help (if you need any, I have no idea what you guys are talking about).
  17. I agree with this part (exept morale seems to be very low, I assume you meant morals). Somebody stole something and bragged about it, which, while not enough to condemn you to Hell as most of these posts seem to imply, is pretty immature. After the first post where someone said something like "you're a dick" was probably all that needed to be said. Enough bashing, I think he's got the point, if he hasn't committed suicide already since everyone hates him so much for stealing $3 worth of crap from a thrift store. This is a very ugly side of this community, in my opinion: there's really no need to belabor the fact that he's evil for 3 pages. I think he got the point.
  18. My top three: Super Mario Bros. 2 Mega Man Mega Man X
  19. Mario is Missing is well-known as being the one of the most unfun NES games you can buy.
  20. He does, however, have an arm-shaped hole in his body.
  21. Did you even read other people's posts in this thread? There's no need to be condescending. He was probably referring to the article and this post:
  22. 64squares and skunkworx rule. Buy stuff from them.
