Any fans of this title?
You don't hear about it too much but I am pretty impressed with it. Three well-designed levels with a very interesting controller set up. Aiming your rope can be equally challenging and frustrating at times. The graphics are beautiful (especially the waterfall on the third level) and while your man's movement seems sluggish at first you get used to it. Eventually you figure out which ledges you need to land on to get to the top so it really isn't that deep of a platformer but it is fun nonetheless.
I'm not saying it is a great game but it rates alongside other Coleco titles like Smurf and BC's Quest for Tires for deserving a play or two when you have the system hooked up.

I think you're right about the finger span. While making my "peace" symbol✌️ it does occur that it would be impractical for Space Invaders plus the fire button needs to be located horizontally as well. No doubt, that Vectrex button layout is optimum.

To my disappointment, having not used this special controller will be one of my few old-school gaming regrets. Track & Field is a stellar cart for the 2600. I will always wonder if the pencil trick used on the arcade game (placed between the middle and left index finger for us righties) would work with this device. You'd have to secure the controller somehow to try to attempt it.
Plus, what other VCS games would this controller be useful for? Space Invaders comes to mind....

Just getting to the third level of Water Ski is rarefied air as it is.......let alone finishing it.
Congrats!

No changes are going to be made to the AtariAge forum, and I will continue to run it now as has been in the past.

This point is probably the most significant to the majority of us. These forums are sacred and hallowed cyberground of video gaming. Puts my mind at ease a little......now I can resume worrying about the Detroit Lions looking bad tonight.
Repeats to self........"These aren't the Same Old Lions. These aren't the Same Old Lions. These aren't the Same....."

@TeddyBear89 Tried your Jack Niclaus Greatest 18 Holes for NES. It's a beautiful looking game, but unfortunately the screens seem to take a long time to load. Otherwise, I'm sure I'd love playing it.
Can't argue with this but it only takes about 5 seconds to draw the screen. Maybe the countless number of played Leaderboard games on my C-64 prepared me for this annoying slight delay. Now that requires a bit of patience.......
Trebor - gold star for you on providing some very helpful info on swinging in Mean 18.

Kind of a PSA but for all fans of Mean 18 I would recommend checking out Jack Nicklaus' Greatest 18 Holes for the NES. It is very similar to Mean 18 in regards to graphics, play mechanics (swing meter), has wind AND the putting is way better. Apologies for plugging a Nintendo game here but I have been comparing these two and if you enjoy Mean, you'll probably like Jack a little more. And the cart is quite cheap.
Having owned the meh C-64 game, I had no idea that this version was made for the NES until the Video Game Critic reviewed it a few months ago and I'm glad he did.

A better question, in my mind, is what was the worst 2600 game you owned?
There were few things worse than wasting allowance money, lawn mowing money, or birthday/Christmas gift on a dog. Especially if it took weeks of saving to do so.
So for me, the worst 2600 game was Freeway. It was like David Crane made a cool graphics demo but forgot the game.
I gotta be honest....I have been thinking about this all morning. Freeway is a really dumb simplistic game that isn't often mentioned amongst the worst. Why couldn't you move your chicken left or right? And if you were able to, there could have been a random placement of both chickens if you collided in two-player mode. Going after your opponent's chicken would have added a cool strategy angle to this game.
A letter in the mail to David Crane addressing this will be shortly forthcoming.

How freaking cool these videos are!

Did it. After countless hours and beers I finished level 150 (with a huge nudge from Dionoid)
From my lame notes I had the most challenge and frustrations with levels 50, 64, 88, 92, 109, 116 and 149. My favorite and funnest levels were 134 and 148.
This game is a dream come true for the 2600. I know the frenzy going on about the last chance sale but if you enjoyed Lode Runner on the C-64, Apple or Atari computers you really need to grab this one too. Thanks again to all that chimed in on this thread with advice and historical info. Here's a pic of the final message after level 150 is completed......

Tempest for sure!
And while it plays like dog shit with stock controllers, Galaxian rocks when using a trak-ball.

Desperate Ted here seeking ANY type of help on level 116......I am guessing I have tried this level 350 times with no success. Same issue continues - that bottom center chamber zombie gets me every time and I think it is impossible to get past him.
I'd even appreciate anyone PMing me the passkey code for this level. My goal is to complete the game by the start of the NFL season (just two short months away!)
Ambitious, I know........

Right at the start, have the falling zombie follow you to the bottom center and drill one hole for him to fall in to. Quickly move your guy to the bottom right corner, then the guard will get out of the dug hole and move left and fall into the established hole.
Kind of hard describing these Lode Runner terms, isn't it?
Attached is a blurry as hell before & after pic of this.
Good luck and please keep me in mind when you arrive at level 116......I'm still stuck!

Star Castle Arcade........really people....no votes?
Unless you're one of the few, the brave, the proud that own a Vectrex and have the awesome Star Castle cart this amazing 2600 port satisfies the itch for one of the early 80's GREAT games.

Planet Patrol, Stay Frosty 2, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Realsports Volleyball all utilize some form of a sunset.
I hate summer. Give me a midwest 60 degree day in October any day over a humid summer day.

You remember well Good Sir.......while it took me about 3 hours of playing time I did get past this most challenging and brutal level. Just because I am so invested in this level here's some of my suggestions in case anyone cares lol
1. You gotta keep the left-center series of ladders free of any guard. If one gets in there you'll never be able to get the gold and come out alive
2. You gotta entice and bait the guards away from dropping into the right-center pit. If one does, you'll never be able to grab that gold bar
3. On the far upper right pit you need to get a guard to trap themselves with the gold, then drill down all the far right bricks (including the two underneath the pit). The guard will drop down chasing you, get stuck in the first hole and relinquish the gold
More than any other level I've encountered (so far) several things have to occur just right for completion.
Mr. Jentzsch -I am grateful for the tip!
-
Typing this with hat in hand.......I am desperate!
What's the trick with level 88 and the getting the gold bar at the lower right-center? If you're able to get the guard out of there, you climb down and you're stuck as the ladder is too high to climb back up. If the guard drops down there and grabs the gold he's trapped there permanently with no exit.
This level BY FAR has kicked my ass worse than the others (so far) ........any tips?

This game is simply AWESOME!
I have been playing the C-64 edition since 1985 and am just blown away at how good this turned out. It took me a minute to determine that there are no extra lives earned (because you don't need them) and I really appreciate the gold bar counter (since many times one of those sneaky zombie bastards is hoarding the last one). The joystick control for moving (and digging) is superb.
Enough gushing......just want to give a heart-felt THANK YOU to all involved in getting this done!!!!

I'd like to hear a little more about this warp thing.....is it a way to directly proceed to Cloudy Mountain at the start of the game?
A few times while down to my last life and possessing less than three arrows I successfully performed a "suicide" run on the winged dragon when needing the second piece of the crown. Just run into it full speed and hope you push the pick up object button in time before you're dead meat. Hearing that loud "twang" and seeing the image of the completed crown on the map is one of gaming's all-time great highlights.

Thank you Rickster8 for setting me straight and pointing this site out to me. I really should have been aware of it prior as I have a tendency to get really obsessed with scores and such on certain games from time to time. And seeing that video of the rightful Happy Trails champ was very helpful as I now know the maze levels and game speed appear to stay the same after the eighth row of money bags.
Off to grab a slice of that humble pie......

This is sweet! I remember thinking how unattractive Naomi was to me back in the 80's and this just solidified it....
The trauma I am currently experiencing is that the daughter is nowhere near as hot as I recall....give me Justine Bateman, Christina Applegate or any subpar movie from 1987 with Jami Gertz in it!
