Awesome games with runs approx. 10 mins or so?
youxia replied to Razzie.P's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I see your 10 minutes, and will raise you a Half-Minute Hero. -
Must...resist...not..to....try...buggy alpha cores....arrrgh But it's Saturn. Are you strong enough? https://misterfpga.org/viewtopic.php?p=52330#p52330

I got an 8GB SD card delivered today - new, and "big" format - and tried it out. Unfortunately the symptoms are the same as before, bothe when I tried it fresh out the box and after formatting in FAT32 with SD Formatter. Most likely clutching at straws here, but could the fact that I'm using 110V stepdown converter could be affecting things somehow?
-
That's fine, if you only want to play Duck Hunt you wouldn't probably notice these artifacts and I think NES core is actually OK (not all cores are affected equally). I just mention it for the record and the sake of other interested parties.
-
Like I said, I doubt it is possible for this to work properly in composite, because of MiSTer's intrinsics, but I'd like to be proven wrong. I've asked them about it in the forum, it'll be interesting to see what they say, seeing as there is an ongoing development regarding this elsewhere.
-
Unless they have some completely new method then from what I know it's not possible to achieve flawless composite without making changes to the cores. Of course, "flawless" in this context means without additional or new artifcats, because composite itself on OG HW is not flawless.
-
It's been released like that for nearly two years by one of the major sellers and kinda swept under the carpet, pretending there is no problem. You can read this thread I linked, if the problem didn't exist then nobody would bother reinventing the wheel. I don't know which design they are using, but I doubt it's the new one, and in any case it only works with select, specially adjusted cores (which they did not mention in the vid). So it's a fair bet this problem will reappear there.
-
Not sure I heard about that. The new ones I mean will include luma traps for composite and will be made to work with the cores released by MikeS1, as described in the linked thread. This regards only the composite, if you plan on using S-Video then these existing adapters should be fine.
-
This works ok with S-Video, but composite is problematic - there are a lot of artifacts in many cores. There is now another ongoing attempt to get it right, but it requires special cores and other adapters. So unless you really want the Multisystem case, it'd probably work out cheaper (and be more flexible) to buy whatever boards you want in the US.

So I got a real Dreamcast again few months ago, after many years break. I had been kinda meaning to get GDEMU for it, but then got distracted with some other gear and now its prices went substantially up on Ali (40 - 130 USD?) - must be something to do with the chip shortage, I guess. So I guess for now I'll be stuck with burning discs, but am not really sure how bad the flaws of this method really are? I'm mostly wooried about in-game quality losses, as in textures or maybe something else, dunno. Is taht a thing? Lossy cutscenes or audio wouldn't bother me that much.

Why can't all ST games be like Domark's F1?
youxia replied to oky2000's topic in Atari ST/TT/Falcon Computers
I'm sure it was the lack of talent which kept him employed in the audio biz for more than a decade and why he is credited on numerous popular games. These edgelord takes, so rife on retro boards, are actually quite amusing when you realise they mostly come from 40+ year old grown-ass men, and not some hopped up teens ? -
Apple II games that're BETTER than their arcade counterpart.
youxia replied to Keatah's topic in Apple II Computers
The "easier" definitely doesn't automatically count as "better". Personally, I get bored quickly with ports which had the difficulty tweaked and almost always will prefer the arcade version. And I'm not some sort of twitch expert at all, more of a level 2-3 guy. It's just that easy games are really boring to play when you have to slog through the same levels before the difficulty ramps up. I'd much rather play the wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am version. -
Translation: I can't possibly name one platform which would be actually "filled" with the type of devs I describe, and I don't have the balls to name names, therefore I will continue to use vague & subjective accusations, and at best, if pushed, bring up one or two examples which will be supposed to represent entire communities. Sorry, but this is not only cheap but also quite nasty, because there's no need to denigrate other communities while praising the 7800 one, wonderful as it might be. While there certainly are/were some bad pennies on "other platforms" they are mostly exceptions from a rule. In my experience most (if not all) of other homebrew scenes are filled with "great, generous devs" too, just the same as this one.

Got to catch'em all (feat. Obscure Micros)! Thursday: Coleco Adam https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/ColecoAdam_MiSTer Today: Commodore 128 https://github.com/eriks5/C128_MiSTer They still need some work, especially C128, but we're nearly there with the micro bucket list.

Thanks for the files, but I suppose these are the same I was trying so far, they fail to load in the same manner. I did format this 2GB card I have back and forth already with all possible combos of FAT16/32 & SD Formatter and Win formatter too, no dice. I can try and buy a completely new 2-4GB card, even though they are pretty rare around here - I can see only one listing for a new 4GB card. But, do you guys think it will really make a difference to using some old card with SD formatter? Are these devices that sensitive? I mean, I read a bit about F99 and haven't seen this kind of no-Windows! warnings mentioned. Also, does it have to be 2-4GB? For example, this guy says 4-8GB is preferable, and endlos99's page doesn't mention any size limits. They also say it's better to format in FAT32, and for that I need to use the Windows formatter.. An, again, is it better to get the "big" sized one than the microSD (which are the ones I've been trying so far, with one 32GB exception)? Has anybody used microSD's succesfuly with F99? About the 32kb expansion, I'm asking because I had an offer of buying FinalGrom. But if I'd also need the expansion to run most games that run on FinalGrom, but not the Flashrom, then it's all becoming a bit too pricey for me.

These type of games have much slower pace. If you speeded them up perhaps they would look jerky too. In any case, ok, maybe it could be made to look better, but as it is it's not really a big deal when you are actually playing the game. Definitely not in the "shockingly terrible" category This thread made me finally try this game yesterday and I must say it's not too bad. I'm not that keen on the author himself, not sure why, but a game is a game. The key point, mentioned earlier, is that it's not really an action one but more of a puzzle-exploration affair, something I actually prefer. if it was a bit more complex and polished it could be very good.
-
Ah, that's good to know. At least the TI is working properly...but the mystery only-one-file-on-SD problem remains. EDIT: One more question: does FinalGrom make much sense without the 32k expansion (I'm only interested in games)?
-
Search for "pleasuredome mame" on the web.
-
The cards were formatted properly, I've been using the SD Formatter too.
-
This is a grid-based game, so not sure if the scrolling can actually be fixed?
-
I dug out a 2GB card from some other device, formatted it in FAT 32, put a handful games on it, but get the same behaviour like before. It's a micro SD though (I use it with an adapter), do you think this could be a factor? The first screen says something like Press Enter To start, but when I do, nopthing happens. It might be because of my general problem though.
-
Thanks, but I'm pretty sure that 32k compatibility is not the issue here. I was mostly using this pack, it's called "Flashrom99 software that doesn't require 32k ram". I've tried a few games from it and they all worked when being the only files on the SD card. The moment I add even one more file, they don't, displaying one of the aforementioned symptoms. It's rather bizzare. I'm not sure what should I do next. Is there any diagnostic software I could run (apart form the banktest)? I said that the games work (I've tried about 5) but one - Manic Miner - loaded and wouldn't start (says press Enter, but doesn't respond. Enter works in TI Basic) Could the SD card size be a factor? (I did try to get FinalGrom first, but it's made of unobtainium atm. And this Finalrom should work anyway for a fair chunk of software from what I understand, with 171 files being accessible on the SD - not just one)
-
Obligatory: "Microcomputers are not consoles". But, okay, you said platforms too... Does it mean you shun Amiga but are okay with Atari ST?
-
So I finally got it all together: had the composite cable made, and got the Flashrom99 too (thanks, @Hans23!) I've tried it today, and the TI seems to boot fine & I can start Basic too - both magical & relieving moment (you never know with these old machines). Flashrom is a bit of a puzzle thou - it only seems to work right (as in, a game runs properly) when there's only one program on the SD card. If I put on more then one (even just two), they get listed okay, but never load properly. Some symptoms depending on the SD card/program include: -the dots in lower corner spin forever (and no LED activity on the F99) -the listing just refreshes -the words Flashrom99 and other text on screen flashes -some glitching artifacts appear on screen I'm pretty sure Flashrom itself is okay, I know Hans23 had tested it before shipping, so unless there was some freak accident in the post.... I also did the banktest and it came out a-ok. The software I used is from this page's F99 Starter Packs section. I managed to play Ambulance and Anthill withe the 1-game-onSD method, so I suppose (hope) the TI itself is also ok. I've tried 3 different SD cards - 1 big Sandisk 32GB, 1 small (needs adapter) Kingston 32GB and one small no name 16GB. All formated in FAT 32 in Win 10. Steps I take: -format the card, copy the soft to the root -insert it in the F99, turn the TI on -wait till the F99 led goes off -press a key, press 2 for F99 menu -choose a game from the menu
