  1. My approach to lag is not to worry too much about it, seeing as it's a subjective rabbit (hell)hole. So, once you got your basics covered, shaving slivers of miliseconds probably won't make that much difference, because a big chunk of this thing really is "in the mind".

I was using it over Bluetooth. It was noticeably different.

It could be also down to your BT receiver. I've heard that they are not all equal. Anyway, if the PSOne feels better then fair dos, just use that.

Don't know why... I just bought one of their LEGO sets. You'd think that'd be worth something.

Well, it's not exactly their set but LEGO's. And that's a company which manufactures product so great that they don't even need to be listed.

All Atari has (that matters), on the other hand, is a trademark license they can peddle to various entities. And how much did they get for this deal, I wonder? 5K? 50? Even if it was half a mil, it's still a drop in the bucket in the grand scheme of things.

The difference is very noticeable when playing games like Einhander.

But Einhander originally allowed only for the d-pad. So whether you're using PS5 or PSOne shouldn't really matter, assuming you're using the sticks. I think even analog controls should work on modern Dualshocks too, in games that allowed for that.

The C64 could also (in general) make a decent fist of most A8 games when converted, even if they ran slower (like the Lucasfilm games / other 3D titles) or had fewer objects on screen (like Dropzone) or had different color palettes (like Pastfinder). To the average person, the difference between the platforms in this regards was minimal.

    The opposite is not true

I'm pretty sure that A8 could have handled most of C64 games. The tech side was never an ultimate barrier for most ports, after all ZX Spectrum got many "impossible" games ported to it, and it had weaker hardware than Atari. But it was much more popular, so it made sense for the devs/publishers, whereas A8 user base was smaller and so it had been passed over since 1984-95 when it comes to port considerations.

  6. Thanks to the new setname feature it should be now possible to split the 7800 core into two separate 2600 / 7800 ones. Here's an example for SMS/GameGear, the principle should be the same. I haven't tried to do it myself yet but might soon, seeing as I've always wanted to be able to launch into 2600 separately.

  7. Shipping within EU is reasonable I'd say, though it of course depends on a carrier. You need to shop around, but there are many options so it's really not that bad.

Since Brexit buying from UK has become a joke, but that's mostly because of customs and taxes, the cost of shipping itself is still okay. About USA, I wouldn't dream of ordering from there - even though I'd love to get some items which are rare here but common in the States.

China of course wins the day, since somehow I pay less for delivery from there than within my own country.

I think the MiSTer people made their feelings for new Atari software and supporting physical media very clear

There are no "MiSTer people", Kitrinx is not a spokesman for MiSTer, and people change their minds all the time too, so please stop spreading FUD. There's no need for drama and bad blood in our niche communities.

    Let me quote myself again:

To recap: it's an open source project and anybody - you included - is welcome to do whatever they please to contribute to it, that includes writing a completely new core from scratch, making a cart adapter, whatever. I'm sure if the legwork was done it would be welcomed with open arms.

Case in point: Sorgelig said once that current MSX core (running games from vhds only) is enough - for the time being at least - but somebody else (Molekula) came around and knocked out a brand new MSX1 core which runs carts and tapes, for those who like this sort of stuff. Maybe somebody else will add MSX2 with floppy support, who knows, it's a collaborative WIP after all.

i can hardly imagine that according to many articals that the snes just sold better because of it’s own ip’s

Let's ignore the most glaringly obvious explanations everyone agrees on, and instead produce a list of mostly opinion/emotional/irrelevant arguments to refute it. Tis' the lifeblood of the internet ?

  10. Eh, I thought it's actually going to be about working-class protagonists in games. And, believe it or not, there are countless examples of them in the ZX Spectrum's library - from Trashman, through Wally and Miner to Mad Nurse. It probably had to do at least a little bit with Ye Ol' ZX being "people's computer" (129GBP) and the likes of BBC Micro (399GBP) being "posh".

(mutters that you can just create shortcuts in windows / linux, which include the -c "foo" syntax. There is precisely zero need for any front end at all.)

I must admit that a small part of why I posted here, is because I knew these kind of replies will be inevitable, and their ridiculousness amuses me to no end. It happens every single time in the advice threads: "well, akshually, there's no need to do things the easy way. It's better to do them the convoluted way, because that's the way I do it! (even though I also use the easy way for nearly everything else)".

Now, there's nothing wrong with using shortcuts, writing your own scripts, or generally being a CLI/Notepad++ type user, but some people might prefer not to deal with all this. And that's what the advice threads are all about: showing people options. I'm not sure why is it so hard to comprehend this simple concept.

And, to state the obvious, D-Fend Reloaded is a well-respected frontend which does much, much more than just launch DOS games, though having them organised in one place with super easy editing of all the countelss DosBox options is a reason enough to use it.
