For those of you who are interested in "how to make a SNES game", I've just published a long article about making my SNES game Yo-Yo Shuriken. It starts with the various steps I went through to design and program the game. Then, it details how we manufactured new cartridges (with box and manual) for a console whose commercial support ceased more than 20 years ago! (spoiler: all cartridges and boxes and hand-assembled for each order!) You can read the article here: https://drludos.itch.io/yo-yo-shuriken/devlog/147478/making-a-snes-game-in-2020 I hope you'll enjoy it!

That was a great and interesting read, thanks for taking the time to write it down! I'm eagerly waiting for the part 2! :)
-
Thanks for your feedback! With 10 hours, my goal wasn't obviously to make a big "hit", but I tried my best to make a simple but fun game. If you had fun with it, even for a few minutes, then the game is a "success" for me :). And I wanted to open source it with a lot of explanation / comments, as the SNES definitively needs more homebrewers!

Thanks a lot for sharing, I've discovered a lot of stuffs I didn't knew, so I hope my next Lynx game will run faster! ?

Woaw, this is incredibly helpful, thanks a lot for taking the time to write it down! I'm not programming for the Atari 5200 (yet?), but I use CC65 for making Lynx and NES games, and this will be really helpful to increase the speed of my games! (the struct of array vs array of struct case for example, i would never have thought of that!)

A few days ago, I participated in the Ludum Dare 46 game jam event on the theme "Keep It Alive." For me, making new games for retro consoles is the best way to keep them alive! So, for this Ludum Dare, I choose to create a brand new game for my favorite console: the Super Nintendo (SNES). You can play the game here through an online emulator. Of course you can also download the ROM file to play it with any SNES emulator you want, and even on a real console if you have a Flash Cart at home! The game itself is quite simple: 4 SNES are laying around, with only 1 cartridge of a homebrew SNES game for them to play with (the game is Yo-Yo Shuriken, a SNES game I made in 2019 that was released on cartridge like the old days). Using any button you can make the cartridge "jump" so you can move from one console to another. Be careful not to miss the cartridge slot, else it's a game over. And don't let any SNES without a game play session for too long either, or it's a game over too! The game was programmed in C using the wonderful PVSNESlib by Alekmaul. The music was composed by XRACECAR. The track is titled "7049 Bytes of Memories" and is used under a Creative Commons CC-BY-NS-SA license: http://battleofthebits.org/arena/Entry/7049+Bytes+of+Memories/25393/ A fun fact about the audio: the "shlack" sound that you hear when the cartridge enters a console is an actual recording of the noise made by my SNES power button (recorded directly from my childhood console, still alive and kicking after 30 years!) Besides music and a couple of sound effects coming from my previous games, all the others parts of this game where created by me from scratch during the event! All in all, I spent about 10 hours in total making the game (I wish I could have more time, but real life isn't always as you hoped ;)). Last but not the least, the full source code is included. I spent about 2 additional hours cleaning up and commenting the code, as I hope it'll help and motivate you to start making new SNES games too! Play it online / download: https://drludos.itch.io/keeping-snes-alive Enjoy!

I'm a bit late to the party (crazy times), but woaw, this is amazing! I've just joined the compo too, so we're at 13 participants now! I honestly have no idea of what I'll do yet, but I'll try my best to do something by the end of the compo deadline Thanks Igor for organizing a great compo again, I'm looking forward all the entries :)!

Hi everyone! Like many other devs, in order to bring everyone a few minutes of escapism during these hard times, I'm making my Super Nintendo game "Yo-Yo Shuriken" free for this weekend! You can get the game here during this weekend: https://itch.io/s/28997/stay-at-home-snes-sale I wish you all courage and hope you'll enjoy it. Dr. Ludos.

I've just posted the ROM and source code to my entry here: I hope you'll enjoy it! -
Fishing for ATARI is a fun fishing game for 2 players on 1 Lynx! The game is a bit unusual, as it's a 2 players only game, but both players play on a single ATARI Lynx handheld game console. To play, you should lay down the console on a table, and have each player sit on a different side. Each player will use a single button (DPAD for player 1, A or B for player 2) to try to catch as many ATARI machines as possible before the time runs out. HOW TO PLAY You can download the game here: https://drludos.itch.io/fishing-for-atari In the archive are included ROM files in Lnx (emulator) and Lyx (flashcart) formats. The fully commented source code is also included in the archive! This game was my entry to the Silly Venture 2019 Atari Lynx Game Compo. I hope you'll enjoy it! From what I've been told, it's a great game to play with your significant other or with your kids!

Woaw, wonderful idea @Fadest! I love it, and thanks a lot for this gift! I've sent you a PM with my adress -
OMG - do you mean that you could make a 3D based game using this engine then? That would be awesome! Congrats on the fantastic work, the technical level is way beyond my skills, but I'd be happy to read more details on how you made it!

homebrew Lawnmower by OCEO - Silly Venture 2019 entry for Atari Lynx Game Compo
drludos replied to Nop90's topic in Atari Lynx
Woaw, congrats for this impressive entry! I really enjoyed the NES version a few years ago, and I'm happy to see it enhanced for the Lynx, and it's a perfect handheld game! (simple and quick to play, but quite challenging!) -
The next game or demo competition for Atari Lynx!
drludos replied to rj1307's topic in Atari Lynx Programming
Woaw, my jaw dropped to the floor when watching those entries, both games and demos, with a special mention to Silas' Adventure! I cannot wait to play and watch those on a real Lynx now! For those of you who want to try Fishing for Atari I'd be happy to share the ROM right now - @rj1307 is it OK if we post ROM of our entries here on AA before the 24th? If we can't make it public yet, maybe we could share them in a forum private club for those who are eager to play/watch them? Thanks again for running this compo, and congrats everyone on your entries, the level was very very high! -
The next game or demo competition for Atari Lynx!
drludos replied to rj1307's topic in Atari Lynx Programming
Not everyone have the same tastes, so you should definitively submit it anyway! :) I mean, worst case scenario you get additional feedback to improve it, and best case scenario you'll have a beautiful new Lynx to add to your collection ;). (btw, I saw pictures of your RGC booth, it looked impressive, thanks for showcasing so many Lynx homebrew games to French retro gamers!) -
Wonderful, thanks a lot! I'll use it to update both of my Lynx projects! Out of curiosity, how did you manage to prevent Handy to freeze while maintaining the new LynxGD version compatibility?

The next game or demo competition for Atari Lynx!
drludos replied to rj1307's topic in Atari Lynx Programming
Same for me, the deadline is very short, so it's hard to post progress / updates while working on the game itself. My game is currently being beta-tested while I doing bugfixing and polishing, so I'm confident that I'll be able to submit something for the deadline! (I wasn't so sure to make it 2 weeks ago :p) It'll be a very small and simple game, but I hope people will enjoy it anyway -

Wonderful, thanks a lot Igor! I feel sorry for you Karri, I hope they find a solution (like undo the wage cut for the workers!) in time for Christmas season. -
The next game or demo competition for Atari Lynx!
drludos replied to rj1307's topic in Atari Lynx Programming
Cool, with you on board, we'll jump to 10 entries, and maybe more as I think no all declarations are in! Karri your new game looks beautiful, and judging from Find a way to my heart and On Duty, I think it will sound good too! I'm impressed that PriorArt managed to make a Supervision game, and make a cartridge for it - they are awesome. Nop90, if you are looking for really obscure handheld, I think you should look into the Game Plus (a cheap clone of the Game Master, itself a cheap GB imitator). As a proud owner of this console, I guarantee you that you can't go lesser know and more obscure than that! But I'm not sure making a game for it would be any fun then ? (I mean, it's already painful to play as the screen is barely visible and the button are not always responsive) -

I've finally made some real progress on my entry, so I've just submitted my "declaration" to the website! I see that 8 games are already announced (9 if you had mine), this is wonderful! :)
