    My dreams of having an arcade collection have become more realistic, so I'm wondering what type of candy cab would be the best. I know it'd have to be JAMMA (I'd most likely play the older stuff, and JAMMA adapters seem more common). I'd prefer a machine that has a rotatable monitor (or do vertical games auto adjust on a horizontal monitor?). I have no clue on what cabinets have those features (or the cost). Can you guys recommend me some candy cab models?

    Up for sale is most of my NES collection (I kept four, just in case I want to start collecting for it again). There are birthdays and holidays coming up in my family, and I'd rather have a head start this year instead of waiting last minute. (NOTE: I do not have an NES to test these on, but they all worked the last time I played them, and their contacts will be cleaned as well. I can only ship to the Contiguous U.S. and I can only ship (at most) 2 at a time (reasoning for this is that I don't have something big enough that can hold all of them).

    I was paying Commando on the NES, and it was so unstable, it felt like it was going to fold itself out of existence.

      @masschamber Actually the NES port of Commando was done by Capcom themselves, it was the first NES/Famicom game they programmed in-house.

    I did some searching, and it turns out that the original Arcade Archives Punchout uses (or used) the Japanese version. This person in a GameFAQS thread claims he heard Japanese voice lines, and that the patterns are different. I have Arcade Archives Punchout, and I've never heard any Japanese voice lines, and I can't comment on the patterns since until getting it, I never played arcade Punchout, but it's something to consider: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/221229-arcade-archives-punch-out/76468600

    My guess is that either Hamster only did business with Nintendo of Japan and didn't try contacting Nintendo of America for the English ROM, or Nintendo simply doesn't have a ROM of the English version in their archives (which is rather concerning).

    I think Pac-Man on the 2600 isn't that bad of a game. I also really enjoy Sonic R, and I think Mario 2 JP is better than Mario 2 USA.

    My Famicom collection has grown to the point where I had to remove my NES collection from the shelf. If it gets any bigger, I'll have to start removing my 2600 games.

      WOW! I have only a single cheap knock off multicart for famicom ? I admit though I LOVE the size and look of famicom carts compared to the bulky large NES versions.

    I believe Hamster only uses the ROMs they receive from the licensee. So they most likely were given only the Japanese version and had to make do with it. IMO, it's the biggest drawback for their stuff.

    Short answer: Yes. Long answer: From my point of view (someone who wasn't alive when arcades we're a thing), consoles, for the most part, we're made to replicate the arcade experience, with some little exclusive games here and there (we can see this mindset in early Pong Consoles). But for a while, only the gameplay could be successfully ported. So the arcades ruled until 1983 when they took a blow that permanently scarred them: The Famicom. The Famicom's original purpose was to have a system that could faithfully make 1:1 arcade ports (hell, originally Nintendo was going to use arcade PCB's so it would literally be a 1:1 replica). Older games looked nearly identical, and some even played better than the arcade version, and on top of that, you got original games that surpassed arcade games. The arcades had a small comeback with 16-bit games but were quickly defeated since 16-bit systems were being released in from the mid-80s-the-early-90s. Arcades didn't get a "revival" until the fully 3D games were being made in the early 90s since a 16-bit system couldn't do 3D (without it looking bad), you'd have to go to the arcades to see the latest graphics (or get a NEO-GEO, but nobody had that kind of cash in the 90s!). But then the 32X, Saturn, and PS1 were released and for the most part, arcade games were perfectly ported to systems (either through emulation, or a recreating the game from the ground up). And the Dreamcast and PS2 just added cement to the grave of arcades, since now you could even faithfully port those HD games. Now, arcade games are just PC games in a nice cabinet, and can be perfectly ported to any system. (I probably just regurgitated what everyone else said, but I'm not gonna erase this).

    It's kinda sad that almost all of the classic gaming reviewers from the early days of YouTube are gone. And even if they still make stuff, it doesn't have the same feel as their older videos.

    I have a platinum GameCube that's broken, and once I get it fixed, I'm gonna mod it. But, I don't know what a modded GameCube is capable of. Does anyone here have a modded Gamecube? If you do, what do you due with it?

    The only piece of Star Trek media I've seen in full is the Pilot episode of TOS.

      IMO, TOS and TNG are pretty worthwhile.  I'm still getting through all of TOS...There's also some fun to be had in each of the other series,  but I'm no expert.

      I second that recommendation, TOS and TNG are well worth looking into.  In numerous places, you'll find "Top 10" lists for both series, so if you don't want to commit to watching every single episode, use these lists as a guide.  You should see the first six Trek movies as well, but in my opinion you'll appreciate them better if you watch them only *after* finishing TOS.

       

      TNG took longer to "gel" as a series, so the first two seasons get a bad rap, but there are gems to be found there as well.  I'll recommend nine episodes from both seasons to help you steer clear of the dross.  From S1, check out the two-part pilot "Encounter at Farpoint", then "Where No One Has Gone Before," "The Big Goodbye," "Datalore," "11001001," "Home Soil," "Heart of Glory," "Skin of Evil," and "The Neutral Zone."  From S2, check out "The Child," "Elementary, Dear Data," "Samaritan Snare," "The Measure of a Man," "Contagion," "Time Squared," "Pen Pals," "Q Who," and "Peak Performance."  S3 on is pretty solid, with a few exceptions, though the four TNG movies were IMHO a disappointment.
