  1. Glad you understood it (and explained it far better than myself).

It made for interesting reading in terms of the fact the team had originally attempted it, found the frame rate took a massive hit and thus were in effect forced into using a different approach.

Maybe had they been given a longer development time and allowed to write for Saturn hardware from scratch, rather than here is the Playstation code, you've 16 weeks to turn it into a Saturn version, things would of turned out better?.

Possibly, but we don't know how long the dev time was for the other games that used work arounds. However, since MK Trilogy isn't that graphically demanding overall, another month may have yielded something.

  2. Soooo, is this another MNO.9 type deal with false promises? Because reading the last several pages it looks like they are just taking peoples money for a product that has nothing to show.

Also wasn't this announced 2 years ago?

  3. At Games...

See here's my thing with the Plug N Play scene, there are many companies with games that haven't been re-released numerous times that could put out some profitable Plug N Plays. Nintendo have shown us this with their NES and SNES mini.

However, I think Atari and Sega have over-saturated themselves. How many times can we play Sonic,Thunder Blade, OutRun, Vectorman, Pitfall, Kaboom, Riverraid, Asteroid before people start losing interest? We've had Sega and Atari re-releases for around 20 years now, multiple retail compilations, digital compilations, numerous Plug N Plays, stand-alone releases, authorized emulation sites, portable gaming console compilations, not many people are interested anymore.

Atari and Sega likely will never see similar success to a NES mini because they have both run their wells dry. Outside a Jaguar/Dreamcast mini they really don't have anything to tempt someone to buy their Plug N Plays in my opinion.

  4. The more I look at the specs the more I believe it may have been better to have just made a 32X stand-alone (maybe even CD based) and made that the successor to the Genesis instead of the Saturn. If not world wide than just the US and Europe.

It would have had no competition because the PS1 wouldn't come out for another year, giving it a year head start, and the 3DO in 94 was $400, leaving the Jaguar as the only competitor. Jagaur didn't get a visual amazing 3D game till AVP and that was at the end of 94, the 32X would have had numerous 3D games by then. Plus Jaguar had nothing in 95 to match 32X Virua Fighter visually either, or anything that ran as smooth.

Not sure if this helps with your future Saturn article but...coders of Saturn Mortal Kombat Trilogy talked about why the Saturn version used that fake transparency/mesh effect...Technical aspects lost on myself but the Saturn hardware throws up issues when you try and do transparent sprite effects in the foreground as it interfered with the background's. ..When they tried it, game ran at 30 fps, they needed to replicate the 60 fps of the coin op so instead used the mesh effect and had the VDP2 handle the backdrops.

This was a very common thing for 2D games that were on both the Saturn and the PSX that had water. Water would almost never be transparent on the Saturn version. Sometimes games would have the water in the background instead of the foreground and then just swap the player sprite with one colored more blue when you entered the water field to make it look like it was underwater. Then when the sprite left the field, it would swap the blue sprite with the normal one.

But I wouldn't say that specific development issue was due to the Saturn being difficult to program for, but rather the PS1 was more flexible. If you create within the Saturns capabilities, development is fine.

  5. Bomberman Hero is the only Bomberman game on the N64 that's anything worth its salt. The other two are wayyy too slow, have odd stage design, sub-optimal camera angles, and areas tend to drag on causing a bit of boredom. Not to mention the gimped multiplayer mode.

Hero has issues but it's a much faster action game. It has great graphics, better stage design than the other two, a good soundtrack, and was generally more fun. Even the intro attempts to get you pumped up.

I would say however that the N64 games in general weren't the best games in the series, even during that time period, but Bomberman Hero is worth at least a look

  6. I wish to have the MVS and NGCD version of Viewpoint Spike.. I do have the Genesis version and the Playstation as well. Great game the PS1 is, but the music isn't anywhere near for what is the Neo-Geo.

Captain Tomaday is really a quirky but fun title to play. I spent plenty of tokens in the arcade on that one trying to figure out what were the developers thinking on making this one. :-D

    Anthony..

Oh yeah there was a NeoCD version. Looks Like I only have 3/4 then.

Yeah Tomaday is a crazy game, not killing the mafia with a yo-yo in Spinmaster crazy, but it's up there.

  7. Neo-Geo for me Paul.

Playing some Viewpoint and brushing up my skills to one day to finally beat the game. :-D

    Anthony...

Sometimes it's not all there. (LOL, sorry for the bad joke)

I've all 3 versions of Viewpoint. It's the game that always gets my attention because of the soundtrack. Even the Genesis version was surprisingly well done.

I still need to try beating Captain Tomaday or Pulstar at some point. Pulstar is much more difficult than Blazing Star.

  8. What’s everyone gaming on this weekend?

I’m guessing there’s going to be a few of you playing spider man?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

It looks interesting, and Insomniac was one of my favorite developers in the past, but as an Xbox One only owner and no PS4 I'll have to miss it sadly.

  9. The umpa lumpa kinda grew on me as graphics were amazing for the time. And maybe because I had a black and white TV with my Atari 400.

Canadian beard? Sure!!! Was supposed to be red at first but after we changed the colors around to have a white face and suspenders and a blue helmet and pants the layer for red (boots) didn't cover as high as the head. So a blue beard! :D

It grew on me a little bit. It was refreshing to see sprites other than stick figures for a change. But at least he looks like a miner now!

  10. I read of some latency issues and also that the joystick quality is not the greatest but those are Euro reviews. Maybe the NTSC one won't have those lag issues? Too early to tell. There's loads of YouTube reviews so you can look at the game selection (again on the Euro version). I'm tempted but my favorite 64 games are those multi-disk RPGs so they don't really lend themselves to this kind of unit. Once 10/9 rolls around I am sure there will be plenty of adopters and reviews. May want to hold off until then.

Yeah, I likely will. If the controller and lagging issues are the same for the NTSC model as the Euro version I'm not sure if it's worth the $80 investment. Best to wait for more impressions.

  11. My bad, I meant Rastan 2. It's sometimes called Rastan Saga despite it being the second game.

As for cancelled games well, Atari had issues with that for all their later consoles. They really should have tried to get a few of those types of games earlier though. I know they wanted to make LYNX an arcade powerhouse, but they really where the only portable lacking those genres.

But otherwise, I still believe the Lynx was Ataris best console in terms of library since being renamed Atari Corp.

  12. Since Atari Corp and Atari Games had a better relationship with Lynx development than with the other Atari consoles, the Lynx could have gotten several more Atari Games arcade ports:

    -Marble madness

    -Super Sprint (Perfect for multi-player)

    -Relief Pitcher

    -Planet of robot monsters

    -Moto Frenxy

    -Bad Lands

Then you have the fact that Namco and Taito only released one game on the Lynx, Pac-land and Qix respectively.

The Lynx's power would have allowed namco to release:

    -Druaga(1 and 2)

    -Toy Pop

    -Thunder Scepter

    -Bravo Man

    -Bosconian

    -Dragon Spirit

    -Pac-Mania

    -Final Lap Games

    -Burning Force

    -Phozon

    As for Taito:

    -Rainbow Islands

    -Rastan

    -Master of Weapon

    -Sonic Blast Man

    -Arkanoid

    -Bubble Bobble

    -Darius

These games aren't able to run on the Game Boy or Game Gear but the Lynx is powerful enough so that ports of these would be more than possible.

Another thing the Lynx needed ports of was more Adventure and RPG games, the Lynx was the ONLY portable that was weak on those. While the quality was questionable, the GB and GG had a number Adventure games and Rpgs to choose from. I think the only game that would technically qualify in those categories would be Bill and Ted unless I'm forgetting something.

The C64 Mini has been out for awhile now and in the United States you can get it at Gamestop for $79.99. I've been tempted to pick up this device, but generally haven't heard much about it since it released. I wanted to get the opinions of fellow Commodore 64 fans before I decide to pick this up.

I saw some talk about it on this and a few other boards but no detailed impressions.

I'm mostly concerned about the build quality, especially for the controller, and whether the included software is up to snuff. I do know you can side-load additional C64 roms to the machine, but if I am going to pay $80 upfront for this I want to make sure I have as few issues as possible when I take it home with me.

  14. Legend of Zagor is the only one I can think of: http://fightingfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Legend_of_Zagor_(boardgame)

Based on the book of the same name. Never read the book though, only ever saw and played the board game at the local game store.

One reason why they aren't so common is BECAUSE Video board games took off. It's was more intuitive back then and much easier to play a board game with only a guy screaming at you in games like KNIGHTMARE instead of having added interaction.

That being said KNIGHTMARE wasn't very good, but it sure was popular. I think in some places it was called ATMOSFEAR.

  15. Now Spike, it's important to point out that there are two versions of the Neo Geo Mini. Both do have the same number of games, but they both have different titles on each. Also, the international version was just posted on Amazon for pre-orders and will be launch in October.

    Anthony...

What's the difference with the international version?

  16. I do have back-ups but wanted to see if this was a common problem before I decided to throw it away.

I have a PS1 that suddenly stopped reading discs, but not entirely! The game won't load up, but when I go to the CD Player option tracks from the game do show. So it is READING the discs, but I have no idea why it won't load up the game.

Anyone have any experience with this and know any fixes?

  17. Hey Spike,

Thank you posting onto the Neo-Geo thread and welcome aboard to Atariage.com. :waving:

To to answer your question, I personally somewhat use it these days. In the beginning I wasn't satisfied with the unit after the errors that Tommo had done with it. In fact, if i remember correctly, even SNK wanted them to cease selling the NGX after a few months on the market, but I believe the contract was in favor of Tommo to continue on until it expired. If you can jailbreak it, then it's certainly worth playing and investing into one. So I do so because of it. :)

I personally don't think will see another Neo Geo X in the near future after the NeoGeo Mini was just recently been available in Japan, and pre-orders for the international console was just posted off Amazon. But then again, all is possible. If SNK has an interest on doing so and theirs a demand for a updated version for it, then sure, I',m all for it. :)

Thank you for stopping by Spike. If you have more questions to ask about Neo-Geo and SNK, feel free to do so, Will be glad to give a helping hand. :)

    Anthony...

Didn't know about the mini until you mentioned it. Looks like it also has an optional Neo Geo CD style controller! Do you know if the mini has TV output?

I always wished I could plug in the CD controller in a real Neo Geo console, because I like the system and own one, but hate most arcade sticks.

  18. Just some bags....

WOOHOO..... I was very lucky to be on time with these....

Both are brand new never used and original.

I asked the seller how he got them and he told me his father in law was head of sales for large customers at Atari Germany in the late 80s/early 90s and that he had passed away about a year ago and these thing surfaced.........

    .

Does modern Atari even have merchandise like this? I'd buy it in a heartbeat if it was available.
