    Thanks, appreciate the feedback! The recording process is not too bad once you get the software configured (after setting up an “AVI” hotkey in jzIntv), but editing and capturing the appropriate gameplay does take take some time.

     

    Let me drop one more thing here for Intellivision players… a little while back I uploaded a large collection of preconfigured keyboard hack files for an Xbox 360 controller to my GitHub page as well. Here’s the link to the RetroPie forum post related to that. That GitHub also includes some other miscellaneous jzIntv stuff - custom palettes, launch scripts that help resolve joystick drift, cfgs, etc.

    Thank you for the kind words. It’s been awhile since I created overlays for Nintellivision but I am considering another batch to add a few recent releases. When I get back to it, I’ll take a look at that title as well. Creating overlays can be a time consuming process, but like anything once you get in a groove it’s a bit easier to crank them out 😁.

    (From the Intellivisionaries thread) Here’s a direct link to my set of overlays. I’m more of a keep the left thumb on the joystick and use the right thumb for the touchscreen player, so these are designed with that in mind. Here are a few examples for anyone who might be interested in using them (the pink portion is for Nintellivision use and is not visible when using the overlay)…

  6. @Duglor - you've motivated me to make some long awaited updates to my jzIntv Github page => here (this link is also referenced in the master RetroPie documentation for jzIntv => here).  That link includes all of the kbd hack files and launch scripts used for jzIntv in my RetroPie setup.  There is a summary spreadsheet in the "kbd" folder that lists the specific controls mapped to each button for each game.  That folder also includes an image for the Intellivision "Numpad" invoked by many of the kbd files (usually called by pressing LB).  These are just my modern interpretation of the controls, so feel free to change/revise to your liking.  Let me know if you have questions or if I can help in any other way.

    So stick does work with Nintellivision but only for 8-way? I can live with that! 

    It’s 8-way but that only impacts a handful of games that require true 16-way controls e.g. Vectron as Llabnip mentions above. The analog stick is silky smooth to use, as its recessed style feels a little more like the Intellivision disc and less like a modern analog controller.

    I’ve never tried Nintellivision on a DSI XL, but on a 2DS I personally prefer the analog stick to the Dpad for gameplay (scrolling menus and manuals is better with the Dpad). Probably just a personal preference thing but it is nice to have both options. One unrelated question I’ve never resolved is which option gives you more screen real estate for the emulator (since it can’t take advantage of the 2DS/3DS’s wider screen). I suspect the DSI XL would probably be the winner there. Long and short is that I think you can’t go wrong either way.

  9. @ZillaRUSH be sure to check out the custom overlays as well.  Dave and others have put together a number of really nice full screen versions.  I’ve also put together a number of partial screen overlays aimed at those who prefer to keep their left thumb on the Dpad while using their right for the keypad. Some examples are here and there’s a link in that same post to the source files. Pre-made overlays of either type are very easy to install and get up and running.

  10. For anyone looking to play Intellivision on a portable, this is the way. I can’t say enough about the emulation quality, the hardware is readily available on ebay etc, and the XL model screens are quite large for a handheld.  The only real limitation is the lack of 16 direction control (even when using the analog stick on the 2DS/3DS) but it makes very little difference for the vast majority of games.

If anyone is looking for portable Intellivision emulation, I’d recommend considering a Nintendo DSi or 2DS/3DS running TWiLightMenu++ and our very own Llabnip’s Nintellivision emulator.  It’s based on a much improved version of the BLISS core and will play pretty much anything you throw at it (except ECS). Also includes customizable overlay touchscreen support, menu driven control customization, built-in game manuals, save states, high score saves, and numerous other options. It’s really a thing of beauty.  Llabnip a.k.a. Wavemotion has also spent a ton of time modernizing and improving TWiLightMenu++ emulators for the Atari 2600, 5200, 7800, XEGS and most recently Colecovision.  I bought a 2DS XL for this purpose a few months back and have zero regrets. It’s a great piece of hardware and can also handle NES/SMS/SNES/SG/T16 emulation really well. If you just want to run the classic systems, for the money you can’t beat a DSi XL. Llabnip’s emulators will run great on that system.

    I have a New 2DS XL and it's working like a charm via TWiLight Menu++.  There are several Atari emulators developed by llabnip available under that umbrella as well (2600, 5200, 7800, XEGS).  I've already spent some time with the Atari 2600 emulator and it's pretty sweet.  It includes a lot of the same type of functionality.

For anyone interested in portable Intellivision play, I recommend keeping an eye on Nintellivision’s progress over at GBAtemp.  It already supports the majority of the game library, save states, custom touchscreen overlays and controls, menu based button mapping and control configuration, game manuals, custom palettes, and a ton of user defined options. Llabnip has even fixed several long standing compatibility issues with the original BLISS core!

  15. This looks fantastic! I’ve been thinking about a portable retro gaming device with a larger screen for awhile, but the lack of Intellivision support was always a deal killer. This makes the DS/3DS a much better option. Speaking of the 3DS, is Nintellivision able to scale the resolution to fill the entire screen?

     

    One other thought, have you considered adding combo button press functionality for the 4 primary buttons? Jzintv allows this and it is really useful for Cloudy Mountain, TRON Deadly Discs and some sports games. Combos would allow 8-direction shooting using just the 4 primary buttons e.g. pressing A and B together could be set to KP9 shoot SE.

    The delay with people not being able to access the club member section of the forum is that its not automatic. Joining the actual forum is, but each person must manually be given permission to enter the club section. Ill sit down very soon and run through the entire list of new members and add each one. It takes a couple of hours each time i do this. 

    Meant this list versus the site’s user ID list. Sorry for the confusion, looking forward to getting access!
