  1. Does anyone happen to know a shop or a person who provides modding services for the Sega Game Gear (especially in Europe)? I don't have the skills to mod my GG with Tim Worthington's GG mod with additional external controller mod.

I recently bought a GG with McWill VGA mod. The mod sounded good until I saw the output quality. While the picture is crisp, there is some really nasty looking screen tearing which slowly scrolls across the screen. I did some research and found that it is a 'feature'. That's why I want to mod my other GG with TW mod.

I see that R10 can have different values. Perhaps the signal is a bit too strong/weak for the 1084 which causes it to start losing sync after a few minutes? Then again the luma + chroma signal from e.g. the C64 isn't perfect S-Video neither, and it was the signal these monitors were tuned for.

It could be. I wonder is it possible to solder a bit stronger/weaker resistor so it could work with the R10? Now the resistor is 75 ohm as in the instructions.

  3. I just S-video modded my VIC-20 and while the picture quality is great -> 5 minutes in after powering the unit the upper portion of the screen starts to flicker.

I modded the Vic 20 with these instructions http://sleepingelephant.com/denial/wiki/index.php?title=S-Video_output

I actually bought another Vic 20 as I thought there was some problem with my first unit. I modded the other Vic with same results.

Does anyone know what might be the problem?

Because the Magic Knight board ties the two color bursts together from the TIA and Maria I've seen this before. Try removing the wire you attached to the Magic Knight board from the TIA colorburst and see if it clears up. It seems to be system specific and will show up more prevalent on some. If that does clear it up, then the only suggestion I have is to wire in a switch to turn the 2600 color signal on and off so that when playing 7800 games you don't see this. If you forget to switch it on for 2600 games, they will just be black n white until you flip it back on.

The LHE mod had similar issues although with that board, there were attempts to isolate the two color inputs but the TIA color signal would still leak through.

Ok, thanks! I'll try to remove the wire and check if it helps, hopefully so!

I forgot to mention that the inteference is more visible while playing 2600 games (as seen in the screencap of Ms. Pac Man). 7800 games look mildly better.

  5. Yes, I tweaked both posts on the motherboard and also the on the the mod.

I've tried three different tv's and all of them show the same problem.

As you said, it sounds strange. The thing is that most of the 2600 games look awful and if you try to get the right colours the ghosting gets worse.

Other case is that 7800 games either look ok (but still with wrong colours) or really bad (overblown whites and wrong colours).

I'm suspecting that something is wrong with the motherboard. Before the modding the picture flashed between black & white and colour.

I'm having bad luck with my pal 7800's. I have bought two of them and both of them have problems :D Now it seems that I have to buy a third one and hope it will work without problems.

  6. I am having a problem with my pal Atari 7800. The screen flickers randomly and has a massive ghosting issue with 2600 and 7800 games.

I had the same problem with rf, and I thought that was the problem. Then I s-video modded the console and I am having the same problem.

Most of the colours are off and tweaking the pots does not help with the issue.

I wonder, could the motherboard be the problem, or is some chip problem?

I have modded my ntsc 7800 and the games look fine.

I have also tried different power supplies and s-video cables.

  7. You need to adjust the Luma pot to get it dialed in. The MK boards I recently sold that I populated, I already adjusted to my AV setup here so that hopefully the new owners don't have to adjust it as much.

You will also get this result if you have the chroma and luma backwards. And if you don't have grounds on everything. Keep in mind the MK board doesn't include ground attachments so you have to do that on your own to ground points along the PCB.

NM the install guide you are in Finland so it won't do you much good.

    Thank you very much!

Your manual helped a lot and I took the +5V from different spot, and that helped! The picture quality is excellent, especially when compared to composite. I tried the s-video mod with Commodore 1084S and with 65" oled tv via framemaister. Both 2600 and 7800 games looked awesome!

  8. Have you tried a different TV?

My French 7800 looks terrible on my LCD that displays s-video 8 bit consoles really nicely.

Looks fine on my Sony CRT though.

On my big plasma screen it displays terribly with the genuine peritel cable, but perfectly fine on the cable I made myself for my ST.

Yes, I've tried three different types of tv's: oled with framemeister, lcd and crt tv. Most surprising was the crt, as it looked as horrible as on modern tv sets.

I suspect that there is something wrong with the chips.

Maybe I should try it with the ST cable.

  9. Ah....Excellent! No...I don't believe you need to put that upper resistor back in. But you do need to replace the small poly cap and the R6 resistor with an 18K 1/4watt. I keep them on hand because I've reversed several LHE and other composite mods on 7800 to bring them back to stock for UAV and Magic Knight kit installs.

    Great! Thanks for the info!

Just to be sure (I'm quite new to modding, and in Atari equipment in general) in the picture below I've crossed out things I don't need to replace, if I understood correctly. So now I need 18K 1/4 watt and the poly cap.

  10. I recently modded my ntsc 7800 to composite. I wasn't pleased with the results (it seems that the mod I bought via eBay was really bad, or I'm just spoiled by RGB :D).

I just bought a s-video mod, and now it seems that I have to solder back the missing resistors I took off the motherboard. The thing is that I don't have the parts anymore.

So the question is: can anyone help me and tell me what resistors I need (the parts I need are marked in the picture)ohms etc. (I took the picture from the instructions of the composite mod)
