1. The thing is...there's no one to help out - it isn't anyone's project. It was kind of Adam's project, but he pretty clearly bowed out. If you want to take up the project, you're welcome to the work I did in my kernel; I think I posted a reasonably recent version of the source code in this thread and maybe in the programming forum as well. But if you are serious about coding PoP you will probably want Thomas' source and not mine. 903955 Well, if anyone IS going to take up coding on this project and all that's stopping them is converting the sprites, I'd be more than happy to do that. I've only done the sprites to a few games thus far (all by cd-w) but I think I can handle this project. Below are the sprites I did for Chris's Hunchy and Hunchy II. They are done in a slightly cartoony style... so the only ones that are indicative of what I might do for PoP are the Esmeralda sprites. If anyone's interested, let me know.
2. Go Fish! and Gunfight are also very good. I was wondering... are you only interested in games that have been sold on cartridges, or just any homebrew? Because there are plenty that haven't been.
3. THRUS+, worth every penny. My only complaint is that it's not available in the nifty clear cartridge case. 902783 I rather like Skeleton+... and it IS available in clear .
4. There don't appear to be anymore problems with indestructible pixels... there's no way to die in this version, correct? First off, I really love the music/sound effects. The way the descending ooze makes random pitches that create a sort of melody is great (what would be really cool is if it was accompanied by a steady drum beat behind it, further reinforcing it as the 'soundtrack' and not just the sound effects). The title screen is also cool. One suggestion though, you might want to make the ooze pixels twice as wide (see attached image) as it's sort of annoying to have to nudge your spaceship around ever so slightly just to hit something. Not only will it look more like a wall of advancing ooze, it'll be a bit more forgiving when things get going really fast. You could also just make twice as many columns of ooze (this would preserve the 'wall of ooze' look and the difficulty of the current version... it may even increase the difficulty). I'd also like to see a way to beat back the ooze entirely. Like, if you destroy a column of ooze it won't come back for a while... that way, if you're quick enough you can destroy all the columns and that would be the end of that particular wave... and then it's on the next wave with faster ooze. The occasional power up item would also be cool (like bombs or laser beams that take out more than one column of ooze). All in all, this is a wonderful starting point and could be taken in a lot of directions... I can't wait to see what you do with it.
5. Ha! I would love to make a compilation cart of the ATHF games. Just think, we could have: - Video Ouija - Insult Master (the one Meatwad get's after he loses interest in Video Ouija and of course, - Moon Master (the Gorgatron is in love! Kill him!) 900066 An Atarivox enhanced version of Insult Master would be great... "You dumb, I already have a wrist watch. You dumb." Or maybe someone could do a port of Ant Madness... only this time the game is real. Can you handle it?!
6. Hmmmm, this wouldn't happen to be inspired by the "Video Ouija" episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, would it? Well, whereever you got the idea, I love it and I'd be more than happy to test it out with a group of friends...
7. Love the title and game over screens... they look great. I also dig that crazy game over music.
8. I managed to get to wave 20 before my trigger finger gave out. PS: It seems to work just fine on Stella.
9. I agree (with the first part leastways... I don't think there would be any legal ramifications necessarily). Aesthetically, I think it's limiting to emulate the official Atari label format... all that extra "official" text and border and logos and stuff just gets in the way of the actual art rather than enhancing it. Here's some of my favorite labels that break with tradition and do their own thing... and benefit from it. Fade Out... I know it's still "in development"... but it's got great art. Flap Ping... the image is so good I almost wish there were even fewer logos on it. Merlin's Walls... the older version.
10. Aww now be fair... most of the FARK submissions are terrible, but funny. PS: I want to play Adventure 3-D... or maybe that Trogdor game...
11. Hey Nukey, since we're on the subject... Your version of Pac-Man is hands down my favorite. You really nailed it.
12. Wow sidcrowe... your incessant shilling for Infogrames has completely turned me off the Flashback 2.0... and I am dead serious about that, so don't tell me I'm being hyperbolic. If you're really on their bankroll, or even just an over-eager fan, you're doing a terrible job of drumming up support for this thing. Don't get me wrong... I was only lukewarm on the idea of buying one before and I may still get one based on the strength of the full game list. But, your constant whining and insinuation that buying this thing is the only way to support Atari in any meaningful way, or that not buying it means you're poor, is incredibly distasteful.
13. I'm curious... does anyone else have a problem with their CX78 joypads causing static to appear on screen whenever they hit the fire buttons? It may just be my 2800 disagreeing with them as I haven't heard this complaint from others. I really like the feel of them for most games, but the static is just annoying. I've got a Competition Pro and a Wico 'bat' controller as well. I really love the bat but I didn't think too much of the Competition Pro (it's not as built nearly as tough as it looks and It doesn't seem to track as reliably in 8 directions as the bat does).
14. You also missed a golden opportunity to say the phrase, "three-pixel cock." And how many times do you get to say that in a lifetime?
15. That's great and all....but what does that have to do with making a portable 2800/5600/7800? All that would be is a lame old portable 2600. Uber collectors like trigun demand the Japanese released Atari 2800 Console / The as of today Unknown prototype Atari 5600 Console / and of course the under-rated 7800 Atari Console ALL ROLLED INTO ONE NIFTY CARRY AROUND UNIT!! WOOOO!!OO!OO!O!O!O And for under $200!?? Can you say...sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet 849810 HA! All I know is I ain't sacrificing my 2800 so trigun can cut it up in an attempt to make a portable VCS... wait, I mean, to make a more affordable portable VCS. I think I'll go with sacrificing a 4 switch and pony up the extra cash for a Phoenix.
16. What's friggin' hilarious is that people have been dropping "Team Savage" references to him for days now and he still can't find this thread... he's got no idea how much he sounds like this HardWork character. That's another thing... why do these quacks give themselves names like "HardWork" or "Idea Revolutions" when they're unwilling to to work and have no good ideas? At least trigun's name doesn't attempt to imply a work ethic or some kind of genius... so he's got that going for him... which is nice.
17. Here's my first attempt at Esmeralda... I've put her alongside Quasi and a guard for color and height comparison (I'm still not sure if those colors are working on her... but I like how simple and clean the other two look). I've made her 18 pixels tall. This puts her at the correct hight compared to Quasi and it makes her a little less blocky looking (I hope it won't cause too many problems). I'm still working out an animation for her (right now I'm just thinking about something subtle, like the wind blowing through her hair... she'll end up with only two or three frames of animation all told).
18. I dunno... It looks like Team Savage's project just might have to take a back seat to trigun's new WWII game/pipe dream. NEW GAME IDEA! PRoGRAMMER(S) NEEDED! I wonder what trigun will name his crack team of super-programmers/Kinko's workers?
19. Here's my attempt at animating vdub_bobby's knight design (which I really like, so I apologize in advance for using it and possibly messing it up). I had to remove his right arm since it was cluttering the animation... that's also what made think about making the whole design a bit more asymmetrical. I think it works better that way in motion but I've included both versions just in case the symmetrical one looks better to you. I know Esmeralda's face appears up in that window (in the early version of the game) but what else does she do? Do you get to see all of her when you win? And, if so, what's she doing... walking, standing, dancing?
20. Hey there cd-w... I was bored at work, so I decided to design a Quasimodo sprite for you... I hope it's not too late. I made him pretty grotesque (probably as a reaction to how cute the one in your mini-game is). It looks like the guy in your game has a four frame walk cycle, so that's what I used as well. It'll work just fine monochromatic but I took a little time to design a few possible color schemes. The first one I made to demonstrate where the divide between the color of the pants and the flesh-tone of the upper body would be. The second shows what it could look like with a fairly even gradient on it. And, the last one is sort of a hybrid... the pants are all pretty much one color and the upper body employs a gradient to imply a division between a shirt and his head (which are impossible to separate color-wise due to his hump and general freakishness). Feel free to alter the sprite in any way you like or not use it at all if you find something better. This is my first attempt at animating sprites so I won't be surprised if someone else comes along and blows my little guy out of the water. If you do like what you see though, keep me in mind if and when you expand the game... I can animate the other characters as well.
