I am afraid people offering "services" like yours will eventually deprive the community of some new games or conversions that might have come about otherwise as programmers who put a lot of love and dedication in a work they give to the community for free might think twice about their altruism if they see others making a quick buck on it.

    That's right.

I'd certainly like to have a physical release but I'd like it to be nice collectible.

Like I mentioned a while back, I'd like to have a custom shaped cart (which probably means a custom cut/designed PCB), a nice and small cardboard box (like those for phones) with the title pic slightly tweaked to look like those early 800 software.

There would have to be an agreement with JM (and potentially Ubisoft) and at least some free carts for those who contributed...

    That's a lot of hassle.

So when some douche pops up HERE and offers outrageously priced "blank" carts packed in tacky VHS boxes, I get a tad annoyed.

Perhaps if people who have experience with 3D design software for the cart could chime in, that would be a start.

After eight years I started to meddle with my Star Wars crawl a bit and I made some alterations.

Just noticed this thread, a fun problem indeed!

You mentioned doing the proper (aliased) zooming method. That is indeed the right way but for starwars type of scrollers you may be able to get away with an incremental one.

The demo group Sanity on Amiga were amazing at this, they were the first to show off 4bitplane fullscreen real time zooms but it didn't look that great probably because it was using the incremental method ?

However I'm guessing their Starwars scroller from the same demo also uses that method, yet looks better:

Or you could do it the old atari ST way:

...Preshift all the font sizes !

if I ask someone to make me physical copy of this game based on free materials (because I don't have time, proper equipment and so one to do it) then that someone should refuse me (even though he has what it takes to do it) because he would have to do it for me for free.

If you can't print yourself a label at a print shop nor flash a cart, this hobby's not for you.

Spending a lot of time on this project and dealing with the crap that ensued is one thing but having that turd come here and sell it in this thread and telling me with a straight face he's an honest worker and has every right is a bit too much.

Sorry but I don't agree with You. My contribution to the preparation of the empty cartridge is quite large. I don't think you're taking into account the purpose of this auction. What is sold on it. I do not sell software, everything is described in the auction. Regards

    Fuck off.

You're an insult to the concept of work.

For my copy I used an Atari MAX cartridge. I do not sell cartridges based on this solution. Sometimes I prepare cartridges with flash memory in the cradle to be programmed by the owner of the cartridge. These are available with graphics, instructions, a poster and a box.

@EnderDudeThis may well have been discussed in this thread already but the way I took it is this. (Correct me if I am wrong people :D).

Sounds fair... Not sure anyone has the definitive answer on this particular game, perhaps not even JM, I guess he'd have to consult with lawyers since he sold the IP.

I guess for most games it's a grey area, and left the port author's appreciation, because the amounts are so low and the companies holding the IPs, if still around, aren't going to share any of the new profit they make with the original authors anyway.

    3 hours ago, EnderDude said:

This is just a weird question, but do fan-made ports from scratch fall under copyright? If so, who would own the copyright: the makers of the port, the makers of the original game, or a mix of both?

If made from scratch, I guess they'd start by suing you arguing that it is their IP, then an agreement could be found, so potentially a mix ?

I just wish the mods would take down that post, I don't think cutting out a square in a piece of foam and flashing a cart is worth paying whatever money that guy is asking 🙄

Sorry but this is just a quick attempt at making cash out of something you have nothing to do with. Hopefully the mods will clean this up.

It depends. If you mean to rate songs for yourself like favorites, this could be done using localStorage. Anything else would (again) require a server side (like PHP and and DB) and user registrations. Both things I've either just removed and/or explicitly try to avoid to keep the whole thing self-contained (can also be run from local files).

I meant something global because there's a lot of stuff that's not worth it to the point that it becomes spam (just like on every other platform)... But yeah membership would be required... I don't know if there could be a special thread here on AA where users could rate songs and that thread would be parsed any time it's updated? I realize how how clunky that sounds...

Perfect POKEY, GTIA and 6502 emulator – ASAP. It was not always like that, originally mmSAP was based on older libsap. This ASAP will stay, because there is nothing better.

That's quite a bold claim, do you think it tops Altirra's Pokey emulation ?

I'm asking because people have mentioned that the sound wasn't quite as close the real thing as Altirra's when used in RMT (Though the version in RMT might be quite old)

So due to this, I have no idea if that is something that slipped into Altirra that made WINE not like it as much as it used to be, or if that was something to blame on me, haha 😅

Not sure which version you're using but I don't recall ever seeing this under Wine. I don't know if running in portable mode could make a difference ?

Not wastefull because you really need it to have the game running using ZXs narrow mode 32Bytes wide screen.

For example in level_1 all of the screens have wide areas (all horizontal or just parts) so we need to change BAK colour and a 2nd the PF2 to have those scanlines because PMGs aren't enough:

I don't mind colored bars outside the playfield personally (and I'm sure others would vociferously disagree)

Pure definition of irony!  You're telling someone to include a different title screen.  BAHAHAHAHAHA - maybe the screen should flicker.  I kid - but I have to mention this.  Because you know - discussions about daring to tell the developer of a title what he should use as an intro (or title) screen.

Try following the discussion without skipping every other post, it'll prevent you from spitting nonsense...

You are right. But I think Tix got Spark's(Superrune?) version to display on the A8, with the current colors, which I re-used. 🙂

    Sparkler is Superrune indeed ;-)

Space wise I could easily replace what is there(around 7600 bytes), but I am crap at art(and music), so if someone wants to volunteer to do it that would be great. But nobody seemed interested last time.

There were a few attempts at converting it but it's not an easy one... 7600 bytes doesn't make it any easier!

This is actually Superrune's picture from the C64 version. So you're not planning on using extra color enhancements ?

It would be great if a conversion as close to the original C64 one could be included  (One my favorite pictures ever at @ 160 pixels ) but perhaps you don't have the space for it ?

So lets say 2x more is 62screens comparing to Highway Encounter is there memory enough for the PMGs if ZX 48Kbs still more 16KBs?

There's no rule really, it's really specific to the game. I would guess it's fine for Cybernoid.

Because then there's M0 and M1 left and no use for them by now they're on the 2 add-ons (top and bottom is blank scanlines / BAK in same colour as the P0 and P1:

it seems really wasteful to use P0/P1 for the borders. P0 and M0 could perhaps be used for the 2 balls and flickered (ball0 uses P0 then M0 on the next frame, reverse for ball1) then use P1/M1 for the ship.

It was honestly a lot of fun to make, even if I had a lot of troubles with collisions detection, or just the weird nature of Player/Missile sprites.

Every coder fails their first Pong collision detection... It's a tradition!

HW collision detection is an aberration btw... On the A8 it's just legacy of the A2600 which was probably legacy of the original Pong.

The A2600 was designed as a super versatile Pong machine, it's really obvious if you know how it works internally... The irony of course is that HW collisions always fail with the likes of Pong and BreakOut

It's possible to mitigate the problem by using more missiles along the trajectory (as a trail or invisible I guess) but software collision are just better (but not easier! )

If you like canned worms :D:

Only problem remaining in using it for A8 is rmt. Planned to convert it's source years ago to kickass, but then wrathchild told me it would be better to just import binary compiled with mads instead. That was like a year ago, still haven't got around to doing it :)

Or you could just use LZSS ;)

(although the code doesn't build with kickasm it would be a much smaller job)

It does, since 2008. Let me know if there are bugs with it!

Hadn't realized that, I remember grabbing a version of the source code in that custom language (from github?) and didn't notice when I browsed it but it might have been an old version. Is the latest code available somewhere ? I clicked on various links on ASMA and couldn't find it.
