Hmm... I'd have to pull out my 65XE with UGV installed to see what it does, although from memory I don't recall seeing the black line. I'll go do that now and then post the results.

EDIT: I just took a screen capture from my 65XE with UGV and I do indeed see a slightly darker line in the middle, albeit it's very subtle.

I do recall seeing this before, and it is due to pushing the output drive capability of the 74HCT08 chip being used to gate the luma as part of the VGATE circuit. This effect is even more pronounced in a 576NUC+ since that unit has an even heavier drive current requirement. In fact on the 576NUC+ I did try piggybacking another 74HCT08 on top of the first one and the darker quality of that line does go away. Of course doing the piggyback soldering of another surface mount chip is very tricky, and not recommended for such a small return.

Bottom line what you referred to as a GTIA timing aspect is in realty a slight lack of drive capability only seen in this unique situation. This is not something most people would normally notice while playing games or running an application.

So my question for you: is other than seeing this when running ACP or similar 256 color map applications, is this something that is noticeable to you elsewhere? If so can you give an example?

EDIT2: Aww wait a minute, perhaps we are talking about two different an unrelated things, because I see in your example image that the line is not only much darker, but also appears in two spots. So if this is some kind of bug with certain GTIA chips, can you go into more detail or provide a link that does? And as far as I recall the UAV doesn't have any circuit that would purposely make something like that go away.

It might be the case of different GTIA variants, also perhaps PAL systems are more prone to the issue. I've actually encountered it when I was drawing a picture for a graphics compo a few years back. Because of the bug I had to redo part of the image because the dark artifacts looked very ugly. The issue was with the chessboard pattern I used. I had to change it to just horizontal lines where it was much less disturbing.

Wow that's a precision fit if I ever saw one :o

    Looking very nice.

I think it can work, although for UAV operation it'll most certainly require VGATE to be OFF since it can cause downstream issues with the original video circuitry, and the UAV ties into that. However no guarantees since I had absolutely no need to do something like this myself and thus never tested the idea of doing so.

I guess you are referring to the artifact adjustment on the UAV ?

Being primarily an S-Video guy, I never saw any need for that in the UGV design, even though it does produce very good quality composite in addition to the S-Video. I guess people want their artifacts to be correct :)

I'm referring to this GTIA9-related issue, with dark lines in between certain luminances.

Left one is stock 130XE, right one is my UAV-modified 800XE. Both connected using S-Video.

As rmt uses lots of cpu time and has crazy memory layout i've used lzss.
I've followed existing lzss examples, it kinda works, I can't hear much difference from playing it in Rmt. Need to add fx on 4th channel, will be in full game.

If I find bugs in player I'll fix it of course :)

I think there's a wrong note table for one of the instruments (the sharp-sounding one).

I was thinking it would be nice to get a Llamasoft collection. In 1995 when the web was new I got in trouble at work for plsying Llamatron 😂

Regarding Karateka, I had a pirate copy I used to play on my 800XL and thought it was pretty good, but given the nature of the controls I can’t imagine it would work too well with a joystick. Lots of precise key tapping to move forward and back - it’s not a brawler or fighting game really. More similar to Bushido Blade. There’s a couple of games I’d love to see remastered, though there’s an indie knockoff called Kiai I bought from the PlayStation store to scratch that itch.

There is a modern remake of Karateka on Steam. https://store.steampowered.com/app/217270/Karateka/

    Nice

You've got some fantastic games there. And you've got Jinks

    ;-)

Yeah, in some cases I was just lucky with the purchases, in others I was looking for specific games. Also, I need some fresh stickers for the damaged ones. But I have yet to find someone who sells them in the EU. 😞

Commando 7800 is one of the best ports for home systems and I guess the secret rooms are unique?

It is one of my top 5 games for the system and even I don't collect boxes, this one I kept 😊

A possible enhancement would be a twinstick mode. Retro Moe, who designed the unijoysticle, did a hack of Commando C64 to add twinstick controls. Unfortunately it is not based on "Commando Arcade" which added the chopper at the beginning and fixed some sprite issues.

The secret rooms are in the Atari 8-bit version as well.

Yeah it was actually that that made me buy it.🤣

It wasn't cheap, but was way cheaper than other auctions so I bought it. I paid £19.99 with free postage. It usually goes for way more over on eBay. I still think it's too much tbh, the game is not up to the same standard as other similar ones (which are cheaper). I wouldn't say I'd recommend. I'd say play Phoenix or Demon Attack instead. Buying both of those is cheaper than this one game.

£19.99 for Ballblazer woulb be a great deal even for the bare cartridge. Just the POKEY chip inside is worth more. Also the reason why prices of BallBlazer and Commando 7800 are so high since POKEYs are hard to find.

I haven't tried the update yet (my son has the only windows PC in the house and he's reluctant to let me download drivers...he probably just needs a little more cajoling).

I am confused about one aspect of the update process: So, according to the directions you update the dumper first, BEFORE downloading the driver. But...what about next time? The driver will already be on your pc, so you wouldn't be able to update the dumper before downloading the driver any more. If you want to update the dumper again in the future do you have to first remove the driver?

The driver only has to be installed the first time you update. It does not prevent you from updating the dumper.

I have also noticed sound stuttering on the title screen on my copy of California Games (NTSC) that arrived just today. Also the text scroller is not very smooth. Tested with dumper 1.1.0.9 and update-012324.

@karri Sent me a proto 7800 cart of a proof of concept R-Type.

I just sat there and marvelled at it thinking that this is exactly the direction 2600+ games need to go. Problem is making it a commercial reality.

Could you please show us a bit of gameplay video? :)

  11. SUBAVGCart provides most upgrades you might ever need for your Atari, including fast loading of binaries and carts, RAM expansion, OS switching, stereo upgrade, COVOX and battery-backed RTC. The only things you might be missing are better video output, networking and CPU/video accelleration. Also separate ANTIC access is not supported, but that is very rarely used in software.

  12. My PAL copy of Dig Dug works fine. Dumping used to be quirky at first but after cleaning the contacts it boots reliably so I think it wasn't a dumper issue. Also no audio clicking of any sort.

The disappearing sprites in the video are an issue of my HDMI grabber (which grabs at 50Hz but for some reason the flickering sprite multiplexing does not quite work. It works fine when connected directly to a TV.).
