1. MANITOBA HAS THEM AND NOVA SCOTIA DOESN'T!??!?...curses! ...I'm going to Zellers, Wallmart, right now!!! NOW!!!!!!!!! ....CANADIANS NEED ATARI!!!!
2. ....I too loved the old arcades...when I got big enough to not worry about the thugs!!..hahaha!...serious, tho, when I play the games on the compliations, it really takes me back..and in some cases, just like old TV shows, those old games didn't stand the test of time!...lots did, tho. That's why I'd love to go to the Videotopia game museum (do a Google), it's got the best of the best. What great memories I had of those old arcades...man!... I'd say the decline in arcades started a few years after Street Fighter 2. I don't think the arcade will ever make a comeback, that is, unless you were to fill an arcade with games that are actually fun, and are constant crowd pleasers...Ms PacMan, Galaga...some fighting games (SOME, not ALL, and NO SNK, please!..hahaha, I'm in trouble now!)...make them cheap, put them in a place easy to get to, and watch the money roll in! I think it would work, but then again maybe it wouldn't. I'd love to see some great old pinball machines too, although I remember they were expensive to fix. The facts are there are TONS of older games that people would love to come to a nice looking place and play for the afternoon, not only to relive memories, but because it's just damn fun! It would take a while for the place to make back the cash, but due to the timeless appeal of the games, you'd end up making money after a while, and could throw in a food bar to make some more money. Could you imagine a place with Asteroids, Missile Command, Defender, Tron, Bubble Bobble, Indiana Jones Temple of Doom, Afterburner, Outrun, Punch Out!!, Quartet, Mach 3, Star Wars, Twin Cobra, Track and Field, Gauntlet, Galaga...man...the list could go on!...pinballs like any of the Williams games..man, I should do a up a business plan! And make sure you hire on a good tech. Done deal! It would be like a pool hall, kinda. With fun tournaments, that kinda thing. Sigh! I don't buy the fact that home consoles can do this, because while MAME technically CAN, you CAN't get Star Wars control yoke Operation Wolf's rattling Uzi Super Sprints wheel Karate Champs dual sticks per player (or Smash Tv, Robotron) Missle Command or Centipede's weighted Track Ball Forgotten Worlds unique spinning firebutton ...these are the kinds of games that would be the draw, the ones that people actually play...not the gimmicky ones like the first Street Fighter (although I remember how great that thing was the first time I saw it..."..how'd he do that fireball thing???") I could go on!....yes, the upfront cost would be big, but after a few years, like a restarant, properly managed it could work. Maybe a labour of love, you wouldn't get rich of it, but it's a niche none the less. Make all the games a quarter (fifty cents for the ones you REMEMBER were fifty cents, like Outrun...but a quarter to continue!!...) You just CAN'T get the arcade experience down to the last detail for ALL the great games of the era at home....if you could, I would!....vector graphics NEED the proper hardware. I'm bordering on nostalgic meltdown, but I'd support a place like this forever were it available!
3. ....how hard is to find the top loading NES deck nowadays? Damn, Castlevania 3 was a sweet game, never could finish it!
4. I'm into the credit saving features as well...it ruins all the old games!..as I'm finding out. As long as the gameplay is good, I'll be happy....plus me and my buddies loved Super Sprint, so the version on there could be fun too. Taito Legends, in my opinion, is fantastic!....you can't go wrong with it if you like these games...the Capcom Collection is also great, although I have read that some of the games, SF2 for example, aren't picture perfect. I bought that disc tho for the 80's games, and there, I find it does a great job. I laugh when I hear poor reviews when so kid who grew up on Doom and Quake and the like bitch about how the games are "super hard, and only for those with awesome hand eye coordination!" ...um, DUH! Of course they were, for the most part!....games that were hard have a special place in gaming history! With all the unlimited tinkering you can do with a game (which is a cool feature)...most people want to see an ending quick so they can go to the next new flavour of the moment. Which is why I find myself going backwards into gaming history, not only for the cool memories, but because the games were so original and, in some cases, difficult! Back when finishing a game really meant you had skills!!!
5. I really would like to LOVE this machine..but it's pricey, and really, how good can it be if they use cheapo components?..no thanks. Plus, you're trying to get all sorts of games which just weren't meant to be in one machine anyway..perhaps, a homebuild with ALL the vector games, complete with proper controls (who wants to play asteroids with a joystick!?!)...and the raster games to their own, and so on. The MAME stuff is ok, but not the greatest either, due to buggy gear. I hate to say it, but unless they were to somehow come up with cheap redesigns of original equipment (and by cheap, I don't mean bargain basement, I mean around a grand) then I'll look into it. I'm sure it will eventually happen.
6. SidCrowe, not to hijack a thread, but about about Taito...it's DAMN good!...and all the games play the way I remember. As far as the bonus stuff, interviews, very lacking, but better than nothing....at least they stayed true to the games!...again, the last time I played Rastan was almost 17 years ago, so I'm a bit shady...sound is right on!...there are a couple notable missing, but oh well, hopefully in a future version...the games are great, the bonus stuff is weak, but a ton of games. Also check out Capcom Classics, great stuff!..with more little historical bits on the games than Taito, but Street Fighter has some minor changes (most likely due to the fact they want you to shell out the 30 bux for the Street Fighter collection)...but overall great...some missing too, like Sidearms and Black Tiger. I''m going ape over all these games from my youth!...with the FB2, after the mods, the fams getting in on it to!...this Christmas is gonna be awesome. PS..it's a shame, I know, I never played Phoenix in the arcade, but other than the somewhat annoying sounds of droning birds, I thought it was good for what it was...quite difficult after the first round...hmmm....those big birds are damn tough!...and they dive bomb you like hell!...while playing it I imagined what was better, this or the atari vcs version!...Taito also included Jungle Hunt, which I assume is very close to the arcade...all I go by is gameplay. If the colors or sounds are off a bit, I'm not going to notice, but when they cheap out on 'gameplay' I pick it up right away...which is why, regretably, I'm staying away from the Midway Classic series..even though theres a lot of great games I WISH they just did right....Ihear they didn't.
7. ..none on the east coast Zellers....I'll keep a look out!...40 bucks sounds right to me!!..now to get the mod slots!
8. ..just picked it up for the PS2...Man!!...I'm somewhat of a stickler for details, but most of these games seem bang on!..Rastan is just like I remember, too bad Operation Wolf didn't have some sort of a gun option...that being said, some real gems were left out (hopefully for a second volume)...Chase HQ, Arkanoid... ..anybody else have this game yet? And on a side note..I'm thinking about picking up Midway Arcade Treasures Volume One....for Gauntlet and some other games...I've read some very bad reviews from the purist side, and some good reviews at Amazon. Anybody else care to comment on this game?
9. ...I've heard mumblings that the 2.0 has shipped, looking at Electronics Boutique for it...I'm on the phone now with Zellers to see if it's out.... ..on a side note, I just picked up the newly realeased TAITO LEGENDS for the PS2...GREAT games, recreated well as far as I can tell!!...Rastan!!..Bubble Bobble!!...it's holding me off for now....2.0 can't be long!!!
10. ...any Canadian kid will have those same curses flying out of their mouth!!..hahaha, nah, it's true...outright cursing does seem out of place here in AtariAge..it's true. I guess it only goes to show how anxious we are to get the goods!....Nov 6th??!?!!..what happened to Oct 25th?!?!!? ...Drat! Nincompoopery! Frizzle Frazzle!!!!
11. If the playtesters, or Curt himself, are easily offended over reviews which are BAD about their product, I've got a couple words: BOO and HOO! Get some thicker skin people. And if development team doesn't want to listen to disgruntled customers who ask real questions, then don't give responses that(in some cases) are full of REAL rudeness. Just suck up the criticisms, learn from them and move on. The product is done. All the bitching in the world is worthless now.
12. ....these delays are just strange. Did they have to do with the shipping strike in the west coast? In Vancouver, that strike is over and now they're shipping all sorts electronics that have been sitting in warehouses (what I've heard). Could the Flashback be like this? I've also withdrawn my prepaid deposits, after, what, the 4th or 5th delay? I don't really mind, I HAVE an Atari, but I was planning on buying a few as gifts this year for Christmas. This delay, what's the cause? I guess if one is willing to get the sound chip issue one from the States, that could be doable. But what's with all the changes in release dates?...the things are made and shipped! What gives? I was also going to mod them to play carts. At this rate, that ain't gonna happen.
13. ...I wonder if you all have noticed....I have some quite new paddles in the fact that they aren't used as much as my 'workhorse' paddles. These newer paddles sit in a box, and the other day I pulled em out. To my surprise, they had a little bit of jitter! It kinda went away, but only after a good 15 minutes of play..which leads me to wonder... ...do the paddles become jittery as a function of actual use, or do they become jittery due to the simple passage of time? If the former is true, easy answer: Kaboom every day! If it's the latter...well that sucks!... Any ideas?
14. ...is it just me, or is this getting weirder by the minute! I have a prediction!...this FB2.0 just may be the "ELMO" of this Christmas season!...I'm gonna pick up about 5 of them, just in case! Of course, I'll have to wait till the 25 of October...Canadian release date pushed back again...no worries, pre-ordered...yesssss.....
15. ....this is due to the fact that, as far as I can tell, the release date has been pushed back yet again....I heard about this earlier, but I thought, ah, let's find out. Electronics Boutique says Oct 26th...when I cursed openly, she told me to relax and went on about how some Link Nintendo game has been put off from like, last April, put off till November, and now again till next Feb. Fortunately, this girl was damn cute who worked at EB with a fine looking butt. So I told her how foolish she was for playing anything past 1985. With that I got her number and I'm going over there tonight. Damn Flashback 2.0!!!! ....I'll keep up the good fight!
16. ..on my way to Walmart now! Let's hope so, and let's hope it's sound problem has been fixed!....I'll report later!
17. ..well, 5 more days, according to Walmart. Anybody hear different? If I have to wait till Novemeber, screw it, Amazon here I come!
18. ..yep, I ain't bothering till 5 October...over a month!!..oh well, it'll be worth the wait, I think. I'm pumped about the sticks!
19. Ranting I may be but I am honest as well. To all diehard gamers, save your cash, and go with the Namco Museum. But don't take my word for it; buy a wired Ms Pacman at Walmart, you can take it back no questoins asked. Sorry there, Snoopy Guy, but if you thinkthat the arcade version of Ms Pacman and this piss poor excuse for an emulation are "so close you can't notice the difference" then you're too young to remember playing it in the arcade or you're just not picking up on the glaring differences (sound, playabililty, graphics, not much*). The Pacman stick may not have been your cup of tea, but at least Pacman moved where you wanted him to, joystick wasn't an issue. Some folks just don't like Digdug...you're one of them. Unless they really did an overhaul for the wireless (which I'll have to buy now just for collectiblility), then I can't see anyone wanting to buy these who TRULY loved and appreciated the original. Proper playtesting and quality control would have saved the world this dog of a stick! Guess we'll agree to disagree on this one. Bring on Flashback 2.0! 892602 You went and made way too many assumptions about me in there. I'm 34 and grew up with the Atari 2600 at home and games like Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Frogger, and Dig Dug in the arcades. I absolutely LOVE Dig Dug. I know enough to know that on the Pac-Man stick, the sounds are way off. The sounds on Dig Dug are even worse to the point of making Dig Dug unplayable, IMO, and the entire thing not worth buying. When I first tried out the Ms. Pac controller, yes, Ms. Pac did not go where I wanted. Then I realized I was holding the controller diagonally. Once I held the controller correctly, I never had any problems maneuvering around the maze. 919267 ...hey dude, no problems...just think that you lucked out and got a half decent wired stick...the major problems were corrected in the wireless. But that emulation of Ms Pac isn't that great, in my opinion. I still collect the Namco stix...but if I want to play a good game of those Namco games, I just play the PS2 Namco Museum.
20. HIDDEN GAMES????! SWEET! TELL ME MORE!! ..please! hahaa!
21. ...thanks, i hear the sound effects are worth a laugh!
22. ...hey guys, saw a Fast Food with the square color label (no handle), with a somewhat damaged sticker. I usually don't see unique games at my local store....anybody play this?..it's rated scarce, a 4 in the rarity guide if it has a special cart shape..this one is the 3 standard box shape...any tips? I'm really not into collecting for value, but you know how it goes..its starts with one...hahaha! Thanks!
23. I'm only referring to the instore purchasing, not on the web....I know, Walmarts where I'll pick mine up!...
24. ...looks like the 25 of August is not gonna happen, at least according to Walmart's website..I haven't checked with EB, but ...oh well...what's another couple months...hahaha....sob! ...although, I'm sure that this first run of defective FB2's are going to become somewhat of collectibles, I would assume!!...that is, in maybe 20 years or so....again, sob! ...guess it's back to playing my old 6'er...SOB...hey, wait a sec...that ain't so bad!!! Man, this shipping strike in Vancouver is affecting everything, even the east coast!!!...all electronics coming from Asia, basically!!... Patience, my Canadian brothers and sisters...as a matter of fact, I'm probably glad that the defective first run won't see our shelves, as I'd rather have it right late than wrong early.
25. ...the thing about FB1 being a 7800 (which it seems did a crappy job of), the public is eventually going say, "wow...another retro plug n play"...but then again, Jakks seems to be doing fine, so somebody is buying!!...and as long as the cost is right, then hey!...no problem! But when they rerelease every game you've seen since the FB1 on the FB5..or what have you...after a while, you wonder what's the point!... I have to admit I'm limited in what I really want: an actual newly designed product with full 2600 compatibility out of the box...that's it. And those holiday multi carts sound like a fantastic idea. Not to say I would NOT buy a cool FB3 that includes the great games from the Atari 8bit line...absolutely!...especially if the price is right! Anyway, that's my opinion...3 more days till Canadian release of FB2! Woohoo!
