Hi, I have just got an XC11 tape player, which looks in a good condition. However, after connecting it to 130XE and switching power on, the light on the XC11 is not on and it does not respond to any button
Later I have connected SIO2SD to the XC11 pass through SIO port and SIO2SD works ok (at least power is going through the XC11 SIO port).
Any tips/ideas how to check/repair it? Its a pity as this is a nice player.
Thanks, Michael

Back in 8bit era I was using only tapes (on both Atari and ZX Spectrum; it was the main common source in my area). When I started my retro journey few years ago I was trying to repeat this approach, but after two days of fighting I bought SIO2SD
However, just recently I wanted to show my sons the concept of cassettes and bought few new tape games and tape player again. I guess if I had still my old tapes I would be using them (with turbo of course) more often. Now, the original media is more for showcasing than a daily driver

Do you already have any timeline for the cartridge release?

Of course it's possible to "hack" the 850 to have it's own +5V be output onto one of the SIO jacks, but that runs a high risk of you or someone else in the future accidentally plugging the computer into the wrong SIO jack and pumping +5V back into the computer...
I will leave it as is (stock) and will be looking for potential use
maybe to connect to voice synthetizor or something cool via RS232.

You might want to look at this 4 port splitter from Lotharek - It can optionally supply the 5V itself to the 4 attached devices, separate from the computer:
thanks! useful one indeed. I was looking for a good reason to use 850
but it seems its not so usable any more.

The 850 does not use power from the computer as it has it's own 9VAC power supply for it's own use, but will pass-through the 5V and 12V power from the 800 for self-powered devices. The 850 has 2 SIO ports, so you can daisy-chain your SIO2SD from it. Even with the 850 powered on, the SIO2SD will power off when the 800 turns off.
thank you; this I was looking for
not much use for 850 then

I have found Atari 850 for a good price and I was thinking to add it to my Atari 800 as a device which will power Lotharek SIO2SD independently of Atari 800. I just don't know if it's possible?
For example, my Atari 800 is powered off; I switch on power on 850, which will power SIO2SD so I can select what I want to load. Once selected I power on the computer? Will it work?

How is the RockPower PSU working out on your 800?
Very good; no problems at all. I have been using it for around 6 months already.

I needed a new PSU for my 800 (not 800xl). After reading around some said 2.5mm jack and others 2.1mm and one place said 2.5mm will fit but losely and you should get 2.1mm. So I get a 2.1mm and it's too small
Instead of sending the psu back I figured I'd just get a little adaptor but I can't find any AC they're all DC. But given that they just increase the size of the jack does this actually matter?
Could I use something like this? https://www.amazon.co.uk/kenable-Converter-2-5mm-Socket-5-5mm/dp/B005KCGM96/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=2.1mm+to+2.5mm+adapter&qid=1605790537&sr=8-4
im using this (widely available) -

There is a quirk about Atari 8-bit (and 5200) video in that the signals generated by GTIA depend on the Display List program running on ANTIC. A programmer can set up a Display List with as many or as few lines as they want. If the program has more than lines than expected or fewer, the RetroTink can and does lose sync and may not be able to recover the signal. I discovered this while testing a 5200 title where the programmer had made an error in his Display List by cutting it short, not realizing that a simple scaler like the RetroTink would balk at the signal. He subsequently fixed the program and the final version didn’t have such a problem.
It’s even worse with 2600 titles, where the program’s display kernel literally draws the screen line by line in real-time. If the kernel runs the scanlines too long or too short by calling HSync too soon or too late, the RetroTink will choke - try Activision’s STARMASTER or Atari’s BATTLEZONE for common programs with problems. Parker Bros. EMPIRE STRIKES BACK is also problematic.
I was not aware. Thanks for sharing. I use it only for 800/130xe.

Has anyone tried the mini with Atari gear? as we know Atari output is often way out of whack and this quote from the retrotink website got me wondering if the mini is suitable?
I have not tried Mini (I have PRO) but Atari uses svideo or composite the same as PRO, which should be the same.

I managed to get a shot (not the best one, sorry) of those artefacts as got them today as well. They looked way more visible and reddish than in the attached photo. It disappeared after re-connecting/re-powering all the devices. Anybody?
[update] Just got answer from RetroTINK that it looks like HDMI connection issue - I will be doing more tests with different cables/TVs and report back
Please let me know if you had similar thing.
[update - final] I moved and reconnected all the cables again and it works fully!

Just until it looks right, and colours look as you would expect them to look.
I have connected the machine. When I start to turn it the screen got first black, but later (still turning) got ok color I think. It looks +/- like my favourite Atari 800
Thanks for help.
ps. I have noticed my machine had select/option button changed... I guess will open it again and change them to the correct places

It's not a screw. It's the colour adjustment pot for the video output. Best adjust it again until the picture looks good and leave it alone.

Hi, I have just assembled back my Atari 130XE and noticed there is another screw (I don't remember I used it to open) on the right site of label (see picture; not mine, borrowed from net). The screw there is turning in circles (cannot tight it). Do you know what is it? I don't want to disassemble it again to check
Thanks!

Interesting, after owning about half a dozen 130XE's BITD and a few from new after 1986, I've not seen any in the UK with 4 RAM chips.
I have not seen either, but read they changed somewhere in 1986 from 16 to 4 chips, which is a better/more reliable solution. Maybe its not relevant to PAL versions.

Definitely earlier than 1998
indeed :) 1988 should be :)

From memory the third digit (8), is the year A1"8"....., I translate to 1988.
As for the cracks they are from mis-handling, and I would certainly glue them before they suffer another impact and crack off, which would be unsightly. Superglue will do a good job.
Thanks for tips ? I have just opened the case and confirmed it has a first gen. Mitsumi keyboard with springs and green film
its ok to type on it. Then, it has 16 RAM Mostek chips and not 4. I have read that Atari switched from 16 to 4 around 1986. Therefore, it seems its probably earlier model than 1998. Let us investigate more:)

Thanks for fast answers; appreciated. Have you managed to decipher the serial number of XE series to get year and week?

I have just tried on my 130XE (with no tape player as its still broken) and in both scenarios (START and START/OPTION) I don't get any beep. It goes to boot screen (white square on blue screen though). I get a beep with CLOAD command. My keyboard is working ok (self test) and in general.
Is it wrong? I cannot still test it with a tape player; need to fix it first.
