  1. Cool! Here's my first score for Mine Storm II - 358480.  Played this on VEXTREME flash multicart with an original controller, with a mini ball top joystick knob.  I have a 30 minute video of this as well if anybody needs to see it :D

Thanks for the kind words :D but I don't intend to program for the Vectrex, just to emulate its visuals on a PC game! I've put Vector Patrol as an example because its visuals are really appealing and would fit a platformer game (something like Super Mario Bros) perfectly. I wanted other examples since I want my game to look like something you'd actually see on Vectrex, else it might look too fake to those that know the console well. I don't actually plan to follow to a tee every limitation in the programming or the visuals either, just enough to make it look somewhat genuine, hence why visual reference (paired with deeper knowledge of the console's limitations) would be appreciated.

That said, the project is paused for a while, but I'll make sure to check the Vextreme discord whenever I need to go into deeper research over the console, thanks for the recommendation!

Oh, well that changes things I suppose :D I don't know your skill level, but for some inspiration have a look at how far you might be able to take the insanity:

  3. My advice to you is to not set your goals so high for your first vectrex project.  Vector Patrol and VecFever's emulated port of Vector Kong are pretty much unobtainable goals for mere mortals.  These are like Vectrex god level developer goals.

Get your feet wet making the simplest things you can first, and keep going if you are having fun.

There are many other Vectrex platformer style games but really unnecessary to even go looking at different ones.  I'd start working out how to design and draw things, and scroll level data on screen.  Make sure you understand how to optimize your code after you spend some time making a simple MVP of something that's relatively fun to play.  Then you can start adding more and more details.  But less it more... try to create the most expression with the least detail.  They say to not worry about optimization early on, but if you don't want to re-write the code too many times which can be dispiriting, it's worth giving some thought to it as you go.

I want to work on a Geometry Dash clone some day.  It doesn't have to be visually insane like Vector Patrol to be fun, but for you as an artist, you might be more tempted to get fancy with the spices.  Hopefully you have some character animation chops and can add a ton of charm with a few vector strokes ;-)

If you want more help or encouragement, feel free to join the VEXTREME discord :D

  4. I guess I should clarify that while I personally wouldn't pay that much for that auction, it's really not that unreasonable that it went so high.  I do value my time, and that is years of sticker design and waiting for deals so I could print them, all for sale in one auction.. not to mention the other bonus items I included.  The buyer likely didn't know this, but still my opinion on value or worth if you like.  I will say the thing that is missing from just running the Test Cart on a multicart is that it's not a dedicated cart for a specialized purpose (which can be handy, esp. if your joystick is broken), but also many collectors bought them :D which wasn't my intention.  I intend to keep them for sale at the $18 (free US shipping) price for a long time, so you don't have to buy the other $50 option that's PCB only.  Other folks are offering Test Carts as well, and Chris Binarystar's Test Cart is really great!

  5. Hey folks!

Yeah, I was surprised that auctioned test cart I put up there went so high as well.  The "special" thing about it was that it included all of the current random freebies I include in packages (usually 1 per package).  I normally don't sell those things, and they are all things I've spent a lot of time designing and getting printed.  So while I personally wouldn't value it that high, someone else apparently did.  I included some other extra bonus items in the package as well (since the usual bonus items were already there!).

More Test Carts will hit eBay soon at the fixed price of $18... and if anyone is really willing to pay the $15-$19 for worldwide shipping, I guess I will include that as an option this time around :D

btw. does it work on PiTrex as well? I have finally got my PiTrex today :) but still need to find Pi ;)

It should work on any flash based multicart since it's a native 32k binary.  It also supports high score save via PB6 and a DS2431+ with 3.3k pull up resistor, so you can make a dedicated cart

Maybe more shill bidding by some WATA crew in performance of fake pricing statistics generation?  Hope not.

Wata ya know, my first thoughts as well.  Somebody that wants to buy up all of the 3D Narrow Escapes, sells their own and buys it back for some ridiculous price.  They are out the eBay fees... but probably a good deal if you are trying to get everyone to start liquidating their collections.

Correction apart from one aspect: yes, you do have to dump it yourself. How they prove that, I have no idea though.

Agreed, otherwise whoever you got the binary from would be distributing it, illegally.

BTW: Here's a picture of the new v1.2 Cart Dumper adapter (TL866II+ programmer sold separately)

Thank you again @jgkspsx I'll ask.

I do have these, and they are slightly updated from the above video, but work the same way.  They require a TL866II+ EPROM programmer to read the cart data via the adapter.  Price is $25.

Vectorlink is a joystick adapter designed by Brett Walach of https://www.PlayVectrex.com in 2021 that allows many different types of high quality off-the-shelf wireless or wired controllers to be used with the Vectrex. It consists of a base adapter that has a connector that is the same one found on a Nintendo WiiMote. This enables the Vectorlink to connect to countless controllers out there. It was primarily designed to work with the 8BitDo SNES/NES Classic Bluetooth Retro Receiver (aka BT Dongle) and the 8BitDo Arcade Stick, but as you’ll see it works with so much more!

Besides offering wireless digital and wired analog support for the Vectrex, the Vectorlink offers some premium features you’ve likely never seen on a controller before.

    • Individual button autofire rates are programmed in-game by pressing the button at the desired rate!
    • Manual shots can be taken very precisely even when autofire is enabled!
    • 8 controls can be mapped to up to 8 buttons without any special software!
    • Analog sticks and accelerometer can be passed through a Dynamic Filter that is adjustable by the player, giving enhanced stability and control!

The BT Dongle will pair wirelessly with many controllers: 8BitDo Arcade Stick and older N30 Arcade Stick, 8BitDo Lite, 8BitDo Zero 2, Xbox Series X Elite 2, WiiMote, Wii U Pro, and Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers. It is also supported by most of the current and older generation 8BitDo bluetooth controllers, which are very high quality, inexpensive and readily obtainable
controllers. It also pairs with Xbox Series One, PS3 DualShock, PS4 DualShock and Pro, and the Switch Pro!

The BT Dongle uses Bluetooth Classic 2.1 and as such has a very low latency. You won't notice any lag on the Vectrex, since the Vectrex typically polls the controller every 20ms, and the Vectorlink updates the controller data 8 times as fast (2.5ms). The BT Dongle also receives the data twice as fast (10ms). Some of the controllers available come with a 2.4GHz RF dongle which is even faster.
