Tiger Electronics LCD Handhelds - The Return
Steven Pendleton replied to Hwlngmad's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I just look at this whole thing and I'm like Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy Nobody liked these things ever. At least, that is what I thought... what I used to think. Obviously, I am wrong, and I can prove it, because here we are talking about the revival of Tiger games, and I never thought I would say that. These have been brought back (from hell) for a reason: because, for whatever reason, and also despite being totally horrible, they sell. These things somehow provide value to customers somewhere, and therefore, they sell. I don't care if people want to play their Tiger handheld game when sitting next to me on the train, and I certainly won't hate on anyone who does find enjoyment in these, but I just wonder why. On this subject, I may go back to that store where I found the Tiger Batman on Wednesday to see if they still have the Wondermega that was there last time. I will try to take a picture of its ridiculous price tag for you guys, but lots of game stores do not allow photography. Some do, though. I took a picture of the X68000 sitting almost directly next to Tiger Batman, so I think I should be okay, but the X68000 is also conveniently in the counter's blind spot. We'll see. -
There was a time when I wanted to make a WW2 shooter that is so realistic that you couldn't stand too close to walls while facing them because your rifle/bayonet would get in the way and you couldn't aim properly. Then in 2011 I discovered that that game actually exists and it's called Red Orchestra. So instead I'd make a 2D Sonic/Sonic clone game for the Saturn. It really should have had one anyway.

Turbografx 16 mini
Steven Pendleton replied to Sinjinhawke's topic in TG-16/PC Engine High Score Club
Yes, I knew I forgot something! It was sold together in a pack with the Avenue Pad 3, but you could also buy the controller separately. You know what? I'll go play Forgotten Worlds after I get home to see exactly how it works. -

They have switches for 2 button mode and 6 button mode, and when in 6 button mode, III doesn't work as run or select. I had some weird glitching using a Saturn controller in 6 button mode with a 2 button game on MiSTer, but that got fixed when I changed back to 2 button mode. I do not know what happens with a real 6 button controller on a real PC Engine, though. There is also no such thing as a 3 button game, though. Just that some games map actions to either run or select, which is why the Avenue Pad 3 is the best PC Engine controller, as it lets you decide if you want to use the III button as run, select, or disable it entirely. You can use a regular controller, but the Avenue Pad 3 gives you an optional extra face button of your choosing. -
The Official NEO-GEO Thread!
Steven Pendleton replied to Charlie Cat's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Did you get your Neo Geos from Japanese junk piles? I sometimes pass over the junk sections since it's mostly broken Game Gears or unsellable sports titles, but I think I should start paying more attention to them, and there are 2 stores in Akiba that I usually do not go to. Those are Surugaya and BEEP. I only learned about Surugaya recently, and BEEP is actually closed on one of my company's off days (Wednesday), so I can't exactly go there whenever I want to. BEEP is also mostly for computers and arcade boards, but I found some cool stuff the one time I have been there, including a Japanese Intellivision, a PC Engine LT, and a Linguaphone Education Gear that is not for sale. I don't remember the Neo Geo section for either of them. I might be going back to Akiba maybe on Wednesday again to maybe buy a Wondermega RG-M2 I found if it's still there, so I'll stop by Surugaya and the rest of the good stores to see what they have for Neo Geo this time if I do. -
Retro Games That Help With Anxiety
Steven Pendleton replied to Nintendo64's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I find Sonic 1, 2, and 3 & Knuckles to be relaxing. Once you have mastered Sonic's movement and know all of the paths because you have spent at least 900 hours with each game, Sonic becomes a form of self-expression. Roll around at the speed of sound and take whatever path you desire at the moment. Be spontaneous and don't plan it out before you start. Get to the end of the act while being as stylish as you can without losing too much momentum. Play Green Hill Act 1 6000 times trying to beat your fastest time every time. Just watch out for the glitch where you die if you go too fast through that tunnel after the loop. Take care of your reset button, since you'll be pressing it a lot. Keep your Genesis/Mega Drive within arm's reach so you don't have to go walk over to it. Finally, it's not a retro game since it's from 2009, but the first half of Steins;Gate. JAST PC version is best release if you can't Japanese. Vita has text-wrapping issues, and I think PS4 and Steam do as well. These are things that I find calming, but maybe you might not. I was kind of joking when I said 900 hours, but it does require quite a bit of practice to be able to do this. I have not played it too much, but also try Pilotwings or maybe even MS Flight Simulator. -
I really hate to triple post (sorry!), but I just learned that the Wondermega does not have native RGB output, which it swapped for native S-video. How strange and very unfortunate. I am not so sure I want it anymore, but would it be possible to get RGB from the 32X if I added it to the Wondermega? Probably not, though I do not know for certain. Might pass on the Wondermega because of this, sadly, but I might still get it anyway if it is still there next week. After checking, it seems to me that no mods = no RGB Wondermega 32X. Sadness.

Looks like they will be publishing Rebel Assault and Secret of Money Island for Sega CD soon. These are mot for me, especially since you can find original copies of these for like $20 each, but maybe someone else might be interested. Sad to see someone is already scalping this new release on Ebay and it hasn't even opened for preorders yet.

Polymega is actually pretty cool. I've played it, and after than I even seriously thought about getting one for playing Saturn and light gun games (after they announced that) on a modern TV before I got a CRT. It is way too expensive for an emulator box, though, and I think it's not for me in general, as I was only interested in those 2 aspects.

You know, I found a Wondermega RG-M2 the other day. It's only 43000 yen, I think, but it has no power cable. I have a ton of Sega PSUs because of the Mega Drive tower, so if it's still there when I get paid on Wednesday, I will maybe go pick it up to see if it works with the 32X properly on the OSSC. I do not know what PSU any of those specialty Mega Drive/Genesis models use though, and I don't want to fry it by trying the wrong one. Time to do some research. They also have a Genesis CDX for a little over double that price, but I definitely can't afford to spend almost $1000 on a CDX. And I forgot something. Are you using the metal clips for the cart slot? I do not have those. I doubt it would make a difference, but I might as well ask. Thanks.

I don't play fighting games and it doesn't work as a 3 button controller, so it's literally useless to me. -
Interesting. I dismissed it as a mod and ignored it when I first saw it on RetroRGB a while ago. I know Sonic 2 split-screen breaks through the Framemeister on a modern display. I forgot what happened with the OSSC since it's been a while, but I am pretty sure it didn't work very well. I think I vaguely remember maybe not having audio or something strange like that. It does work on the Mega Sg, where it runs in an interlaced mode, and the Mega Drive/Genesis Mini, where it actually runs in progressive! That's a software emulator, though, so it can do things like that... along with having massive input lag that I find makes the game unplayable. Most other games on it are okay, but not Sonic 2. Not sure about how the RAD2x or RetroTINK-2X handle Sonic 2 split-screen. I only have 2 screens in my house: a CRT and a PC monitor. Nothing else available.

Yeah, I am not into modding stuff (SuperGrafx motherboard support post removal and Nomad upgrades are the 2 exceptions), but I definitely approve of repairs. My Mega-CD is doing the thing where it constantly spits out the disc tray as of a few months ago and the battery was dead when I got it. Good thing I got the MegaSD before that started happening. I really should get it and all of my other old things serviced. Maybe a recap would help the 32X, but this issue only happens on OSSC and not the CRT, where it is literally perfect, so I'm not entirely sure what's going on.
-
Yeah, I'll just leave it stock. There is what looks to be an 88 original here in town that I want to buy anyway. That should give me a VA0 or VA1 motherboard. I've not tried 32X with composite, though, just the MD alone to see how it looked on the CRT (terrible, as expected). I'll probably just use it only on the CRT, since there is literally no problem there. Of course the CRT isn't set up properly, but at least it looks relatively good. Thanks.
-
It's a Japanese VA4 MD with Japanese Super 32X and HD Retrovision cable. Maybe it's the cable, but from what I gather there shouldn't be a huge difference between SCART and component. I also don't want to buy a SCART cable since my CRT only has RF, D-terminal, S-video, composite, and YCbCr. Same cable works absolutely perfectly without the 32X and on the PC Engine. I really think the whole thing where the MD renders some stuff and the 32X renders some other stuff is the issue.

I wouldn't say it feels totally different. I had one when I was a kid that was more or less the same. Also the originals are literally over 30 years old at this point, as well. I was fortunate to find a CIB Avenue Pad 3 on the day I bought my PC Engine, along with with the Shuttle controller, which was actually the first PC Engine anything that I ever bought. Both are highly recommended, but I could understand if someone doesn't like the width of the Avenue Pad 3. It's almost exactly the same width as a PS4 controller but with the ergonomics of a regular PC Engine controller. Shuttle is nicer, but less functionality because it doesn't have the III button. -
Nintendo Switch overtakes 1990s SNES console in sales

That... looks like they could get in trouble with Nintendo if they are actually making and selling stuff with Nintendo's logos on it without a license. -
The Official NEO-GEO Thread!
Steven Pendleton replied to Charlie Cat's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Nope, nothing in the junk pile but a broken regular SFC controller, a broken SFC Ascii pad, and a bunch of junk SFC games, mostly sports titles. If you see something in the junk pile in a Japanese game store, it's most definitely broken or a totally unwanted game (usually sports), unlike in the US where they don't bother to clean stuff. Still, if you know how to fix the stuff or you want a donor FC/SFC cart for performing open cart surgery, you can get some really good deals. I see lots of junk Game Gears, mostly, but none this time. I have never seen Neo Geo junk ever. They take very good care of their Neo Geo stuff here, and games in general are usually in extremely good condition. I regret not picking up a functional CIB Mario Paint set for like 500 yen in Trader a few months ago... -
Is this game worth picking up for under 2000 yen in the box? I found a copy yesterday with 4 other Intellivision games and I thought about it, but I didn't have a whole lot of cash on me and I decided on Herzog Zwei and Skiing instead since that's an Amico pack-in. I do not remember if it has the manual, but I do not believe it does. My Skiing said the same but had the overlays when I got home and opened it. I don't generally play golf games, but I'll play any genre of game there is as long as the game is fun.

When did they start selling incomplete games?
Steven Pendleton replied to Keatah's topic in Modern Gaming Discussion
I mentioned a game called ResQ over in the Genesis recommendations thread. This game was finished and cancelled before release, so the devs put it on the internet for everyone to enjoy. It's too bad, since it's a really cool and unique game. Too bad StarCraft Ghost never made it. -

Yay, Star Citizen! I still have hope for it to actually get released, though. -
FPGA Based Videogame System

That rainbow health meter is quite something. Looks just like when I tried my Mega Drive's composite for the first time a while ago. Has anyone gotten it working with the 32X yet? Oops, must have missed the post just above asking about 32X. Sorry. Question still stands, though. -
Nintendo Play Station Auction
Steven Pendleton replied to Trinity's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I just hope it doesn't vanish into someone's collection forever to be forgotten about until someone goes and finds it in an attic in 80 years and it's all mouldy and stuff. It may or may not have any official software for it, but it is perhaps the single most important console of the 90s. No Nintendo Play Station = no PlayStation = maybe Sega would have survived longer, maybe no N64 or a radically different one, and the PS2 would not have existed, let alone become the single best selling dedicated video game system ever and put an affordable DVD player into the homes of millions worldwide. Video games are literally in the place they are right now not only because of this system, but BECAUSE this system never made it past prototype phase. -
Do people not use the auto brightness? It's pretty obvious that's what it is for. The auto brightness sometimes is not helpful, though and it may drain your battery slightly faster because it has to read and process the brightness and then adjust accordingly instead of the user doing it manually. Not sure what's up with the screen, since I just got this from the internet, but speakers are here:
