I posted previously on a separate thread that the GBA SP is the best portable gaming system on the whole with its humongous liabrary, long battery life, true portability and finally a lighting system. It is not perfect though as it does not have a built in earphone jack and no dimmer for the side light. I find that inexcusable as there are quality portables, the Lynx, Nomad and Game Gear that have been around for over ten years and have these things. Still, the GBA SP is the best out there and I don't see any portable on the horizon that will unseat it.

I pulled this link from the past which is interesting because some of the posters on this link posted their favorites back then:

The responses back then are similar to now. I am surprised Joust wasn't mentioned but there are so many good games for the Lynx that it is understandable. I will put in a vote for Xenophobe which is an awesome single player as well as multi. It is a game that actually improves on the arcade. Klax is THE definitive version on any platform. Shanghai is a great puzzler.
Electrocop is the most overrated.

I saw th NGage at EB and the salesman was really pushing the thing hard. I played it and I was so underwhelmed by the system and its game selection that I couldn't believe that they were going to sell it at the price they were asking- $300!!! This system has bomb written all over it. There is absolutely no reason to shell out this amount for the same games rehashed over and over again. The buttons are poor ,loading the games are a joke and the phone is embarrasing. Don't worry. The price will drop like a lead balloon.

My 2 cents: The original System Shock and X-Com. Probably the two best stories in gaming history. X-Com took a great concept and executed it flawlessly. Its got everything except the graphics: resource management, squad turn based combat, suspense. Its gameplay is addicting now as it was when it first came out.
I never finished System Shock. I could never defeat Shodan. Someone give me a hand here. Is it more than just firing away at the overgrown carrot at the end? Still, the ride getting there is a rush. The game still gives me the creeps and it was one of the first games on the computer that actually scared me out of my seat. I don't have a computer that has enough power to play System Shock 2 (!!!) but if I did, that would be the game I would pick up.

Populous was the first "God" game. Can you say it was also a real time strategy game?

Admitedly I know little of the GP32 but it seems it is not produced in mass quantity. I don't know any games for it. Now, I have been hearing alot of stuff about the Nokia Ngage and it looks like a cool system that will potentially defeat the GBA SP. It's got some awesome hardware and there is more variety on the controls. Its initial library is small. I need some input on this one.

We had previous threads on the best system. I have four portables and tried a few more and here is my ranking of the best portables. I base ny list on hardware, portability and quality of game library:
1. Gameboy Advance SP- Not a perfect system but the best out there. Finally an internal lighting system but still no dimmer control and inexcusably no standard headphone jack. The sound is still not loud enough. But, it has the hugest library out there with its backward compatibility and it is the really the only truly portable system around with an internal light. Multiplayer can be done many times with only one game cartridge. The design is elegant too.
2. Sega Nomad- A portable Genesis. The library is huge and prices are incredibly cheap, the controls are great ad it is backlit with a dimmer system. Sound is awesome. What is great is that it can be hooked to a TV and become a Console system. Unfortunately, the portability of the system is limited by its size and power requirements. Multiplayer is limited as well. That is why it can't get the #1 spot.
3. Atari Lynx- Fantastic stereo sound with the headphones. A great back lit screen with dimmer controls. Multiplayer is potentially greater than the SP with up to 8 players through the comlynx cable but each player has to have the same game for it to work. Portability is hampered by its size and energy requirements. Still, the accessories are cool and the battery life can be really increased by the battery pack. The library is limited and it lacks good fighters and sports games. Games are really cheap. Still, it has some of the definitive arcade translations found on any portable and indeed any system. Try Klax, Rampart, Road blasters and Xenophobe to see what I mean.
4. NEO GEO Pocket- Probably the longest battery life and greatest controls of any system. Not back lit but has vibrant colors. Good sound and really portable. Games are good but it is a limited library heavily slanted to fighters. Games are really expensive for a discontinued system. This why I put it behind the Lynx.
5. Turbo Pocket- A TV tuner (!) and plays the console games. Unfortunately really expensive and games in limited quantity.
Tthe reat of the pack are the Wonderswan, Sega Game Gear, Game.Com and Virtual Boy in that order.

S.T.U.N. Runner is indeed an amazing achievement for the Lynx especially when you consider that the game itself is polygonal based and the frame rate is smooth as silk on the Lynx. The sound is also great. The arcade ports for the most part are excellent, the aforementioned Klax being the best version ANYWHERE including the consoles. Rampart actually improves on the arcade and Joust, Xenophobe and Roadblasters are amazing. My concern in S.T.U.N. Runner is the game play. Is it really just an exercise in pattern recognition or is there any reflexes involved? Still I love the game and I am constantly blown away by it. BTW, did anyone figure out the warp screen?

Any strategy game or a game that has too much on the screen at one time. Powermonger and Smash TV comes to mind.

I actually have a personal hatred for the Swordquest series because I was sucked in a wasted so much time writing a log on all the combinations. When I saw the solution and found out how impossible it was and how useless a making a log was, I took the cart and hummed it into the Schuykill River just to get my ya yas out for all the time I wasted. What is even worse, was that if you somehow completed the game, the ending was so lame.

1. Skeet Shoot
2. Skeet Shoot
3. Skeet Shoot
4. Froggo Games
5. Mythicon Games
6. Swordquest Mindnumbing Impossible World

If you are a puzzle freak, then Crystal Mines is the bomb, but there are other great puzzle games for the lynx like Chips Challenge and Shanghai that are awesome as well. And yes, there are even better games for the Lynx out there with all due respect to Mines. If you are an arcader, then Blue Lightening, Klax, Rampart, Xenophobe, Ms. Pacman, Joust and Rampage will REALLY keep you up all night. Throw in S.T.U.N. Runner, Roadblasters and you got a handheld that can stand up to any portable, including the mighty GBA SP which STILL does not have a dimmer mechanism for their "Frontlight" system or standard headphone jacks or stereo sound (I want you to hear Klax on the Lynx which is THE definitive version of on ANY system with headphones and you will see what I mean). Evil? You ain't seen nuthin, yet.

A portable Atari that can be had for less than 1/10 the cost with better hardware: the Lynx. Just a plug for the true Atari portable. And the versions of Klax, Rampage, Xenophobe are a wee bit better than the VCS...
-
Which of the Megaman series is the best for the Gameboy Advance? I read from general reviews that the best is Battle Network 2 but, if I have to pick one, what would you recommend?
-
I do not regret selling my system. To tell you the truth, I got bored of the VCS and I got into handheld games, namely becasue they take up a lot less space and are a lot less messier. I love the games I have for my Lynx, Nomad, Advance SP and NEO GEO Pocket. I just came to the realization that I am a gamer rather than a collector and I wanted to branch out. Now that they are planning to have the Activision collection on the Advance, there is even less yearning for the old VCS. I will always look back fondly on the VCS and some of the games, but I moved on. If I have a hankering, there is always Stella emulation.

I do not LOVE E.T., but considering the incredibly impossible deadlines imposed in getting the game out, E.T. is definitely not a horrible game and is not the contemptible money grab as say, the Swordquest series, Pac Man and Defender. I thought the game was challenging and despite the pits, the gameplay was basically sound. If they got rid of the pits and possibly made more screens, the game would have been better. Hide the pieces behaind trees and houses for example but keep the zones. Maybe make it more like Raiders. E.T. definitely was the beginning of the end for Atari but the game itself was not the reason. It was the hubris of the company whose executives actually said they could sell carts if they loaded them with horseshit, a lack of innovation, incredible missed opportunities (Famicon) and you got RIP Atari.

Dreamcast might be the best console gaming bargain going. Great hardware and some cutting edge games at a bargain basement price. Heck it is cheaper than the SNES at Gamestop. Anyway, gamewise Soul Calibur is the definitive fighter and I'm not into fighters. Crazy Taxi is good too as well as Unreal and Quake.
-
Overrated- Berzerk: What a repetitive bore. Only six mazes and the robots can't shoot diagnol.
Tutankham: Does not even come close to the manic nature of the arcade. Controls blow too.
Underrated- Thunderground: Challenging and a good blend of strategy and action.

Well, it took some time, four months to be exact, but I finished up my collection through Paul's globetrotting wizardry. I got THE three games I needed to round out my collection: Missle Command/Asteroids, Awesome Golf, Ninja Gaiden III. In addition I got a game purely for collection purposes- Gordo 106. Paul even threw in a Comlynx cable for my trouble. Total cost including shipping- $43.00.
I think Paul will no longer be in the Lynx business for long and he is selling his remaining inventory. If you contact him, he may give you his final inventory list, if any remaining. I thank Paul again for greatly expanding my collection without breaking the bank.

I have a Sega Nomad and I have Sonic 1,3 3D and Knuckles. Is Sonic for The NEO GEO really better than these? Is Sonic 2 good? Also, I really do not want to get into fighters that much (I find most to be exercises in button mashing)- Is King of Fighters really better than SNK v. Capcom? Final Fury? How about Puyo Pop v. Bust a Move in the Puzzle category? Is Slug 2 better than Slug 1? The problem is that most of these games are really expensive so I am just confining them to the best of the best. BTW, I got the NEO GEO Pocket at Philly Classic (I live only fifteen minutes away from the convention center) for $28.00. THe games went real quick there. THe portables for sale were seriously underrepresented vis a vis the consoles. THere were some Game Gears, Advance Games. Very little Lynx games and the ones they had were common. I think this will change in the future as portables have become hot items (Nomad, Lynx and SPs especially), but for now Ebay is the best option. Can't speak for the other conventions....
-
I just got an ocean pocket color and I am getting two of the best: Match of the Millenium and Card Fighters. I am a Lynx collector and I just want the absolute best games the NEO GEO has. I know about Metal Slug but what about some others (other than Sonic- I have three versions for the Sega Nomad)? I I just want the absolute best as I do not intend to collect for the system.

You guys could have went upstairs or to King of Prussia for good food. That rubber crap wasn't food. I am a Lynx collector and I could not find anything except the AtariAge table and Carl Forhan's stuff (Carl was not there this year) so I was somewhat disappointed. Still, I got to talk to Sid Meier and was able to tell him I curse his name many times for ruining my sleep (He said sleep was overrated). I also got to see that Tron chick (BTW check out her website and look at her acting credits. Stellar work. She is available for your golf conventions). The highlight as everyone noted, is the people and getting to see Stan and the pleasure of watching him win his bag o' crap. The turnout was smaller than last year which is surprising considering that the weather was crappy (less opportunity to go out) and there was some advance publicity. The arcade was also a little less interesting this year as there was no Sinistar or Star Wars sit down. Tutankham is great though.
I bought way more this year. I got a Sega Nomad and that mean loads of Genesis. I got Nobunaga's Ambition which is awesome as I love Japanese Feudal History as well as Contra, Toe Jam and Earl, MERCS and Williams Arcade Classics.
I agree with the complaints above. What is the rush hightailing it out of there before closing? I was looking around the tables scouting the best deals and the selection. I returned on Sunday and many of the vendors were gone. I think that was just plain unprofessional and gives the convention a black eye. It is a huge disservice to those collectors who travelled large distances and spent their weekend just to be at the convention.

I got my Lynx Casino new off Ebay for $12 including shipping so I think I got off lucky. It is a little bit more rare than the average Lynx game, but not so rare that you can't get it for less than $15.00. It is a good game but not on anyone's essential. must have lists. It more or less faithfully reproduces a casino and the ambience pretty well, but of course it gets repetitiive without the thrill of blowing real money.

Got meself a Dreamcast with a whole mess of crap

You guys convinced me and I got the official maracas for Smaba for $50.00. Did I overpay? I also got Phantasy Star Online for $2 and Skies of Arcadia for $15. Cripes, the Dreamcast is the best gaming value around. THe problem is that the window of Opportunity is getting smaller as EBand Gamespot arenot bringinganyting new in. Also, both stores have a policy of not selling any DC stuff in their mall stores now. Another question: Is it worthwhile to get a steering wheel controller, and if so, whaich one do you recommend? Also, what do you guys think of GUnbird 2?
