  1. I love pinball with the video game boom it gets pushed to the wayside. What do you think is the best ever? Or what is the best pinball simulation on the computer or videogame? I think the Timeshock! game by Virgin was awesome, closely resembled pinball but it was hard. Best pinball is hard too as my knowledge really isn't that in depth but I remember playing the Addams Family pinball game alot. I love the missions. I know there are better, but like I said, I aint an expert.
  2. AtariJoe you present yourself as some expert or someone in the know or someone with inside information, so you have to have at least SOME responsibility for what you write. You post all of these breathless commentary saying this game rocks yet your review is so partial and leaves out a lot of information. You indeed sound like you are selling this game or at least promoting it on behalf of your friends so that your opinion comes off less than impartial. The mere comment that you actually think I am slamming your friend who happens to sell this game is damning. This is a grave disservice to the Lynx community who cannot get a demo of this game to make a decision whether or not to shell out a serious chunk of change for it. Your comment about what I am producing in the Lynx community is arrogant, condescending and more importantly, irrelevant to the very valid questions asked- that is, how complete is the game and is it worth my money. AtariJoe, your only valid comment is that you ask questions of the vendor. I strongly reccomend that and to find everything you can about the game before making the decision. Do not be rushed by the hype or the hard sell of "only limited supplies" before making your decision.
  3. I have a Lynx and a GBA and I really love my Lynx but I admit there are some deficiencies, namely, the lack of good sports and fighting titles. I really want only one more portable and I was doing some research and I found these three to be the best. I want the best system value wise. WHich has the best and biggest library especially in the arcade conversion, RPG, fighting categories. I realize the NEO GEO has the best battery life of the three but I intend the system to be a more home type. Which has the best specs as a whole?
  4. Some questions not answered: 1. Are there fleas and scorpions like in the arcade? 2. Is there a difficulty curve? 3. Are there a difference in the length of the centipedes, the number on screen etc.? I am not convinced this is worth my money. No sound is pretty damning and it it seems like the game was just burned on without any attempt at additional programing. For $50, I want something more than what is in front of me. Pretty packaging is only a small part of the overall product. How much is it for the ROM and MAME.....
  5. I tried to activate the Galaxian game but without success. How do you hold the Lynx-vertical or horizontal? What screen you start with the code? How do you know you are successful. I was at the table of contents, pressed LRLRDU, Opt1 and and then Opt. 2 then started the pages game. Nothing. Just played a game of Lexis.
  6. We had various threads on the five most indispensible games and so on that you can look at. THE best is a lot trickier because everyone has different tastes. No way to get the best, even by consensus. For me, the best has to have the greatest replay value along with gameplay. It also has to have some multiplayer enjoyment as well as single player. With that being said, Klax is probably the best singleplayer but lacks the multiplayer. I would say Xenophobe over Joust by a nose. Xenophobe actually improves on the arcade with its gameplay and multiplayer. Four can play rather than two for Joust. You can also play the alien in multiplayer. The game's difficulty curve ramps up nicely. The enviornments are somewhat more interacive than in the arcade. So on the whole, Xenophobe IMHO would be the best game on the Lynx. Still, you can't go wrong on any of the games I mentioned. Honorable mention to Rampart and Rampage.
  7. You got the classic homebrew quandry. Newbies generally buy the system because it is awesome for the value, the great games can be had for a song or at least cheaper than the homebrews. Unless you are the hardcore collector or the game is that good, it makes little sense shelling out $50 for a game (see my post in the Centipede thread). That being said, there are a few homebrews that are excellent. Cybervirus is actually quite advanced and I like the mission based scenarios. Championship Rally is very good and if you like Scrabble then Lexis is definitely worth your time.
  8. Welcome to a growing legion of satisfied Lynx players. The question you want to ask is how much you want to spend. What is great about the Lynx is that the top games can be had for under $10 even under $5. The must games even are cheap like Klax which has the most mindblowing sound on any portable. Good games for incredibly cheap are Chips Challenge, Crystal Mines, Shanghai, Steel Talons, Xybots, Klax, Rampart (my personal fave). The last two are essential titles and Shanghai is great. If you have some more dough to spend, there are a ton of mid range games between $10 and $20. I would say the essential ones are STUN Runner, a great game and a mind blowing achievement for the Lynx, Joust, Roadblasters, Rampage, Battlewheels especially in multiplayer. I am probably in the minority but I feel that Electrocop is the most overrated game on the Lynx. The graphics are great but the gameplay is really bland and it has no replay value. Just a glorified maze game. Over $20 and you really got to question if you are a gamer or a collector. Cybervirus is probably the best homebrew out there, and Lemmings is a great game to play and is rare for the collector. Stay away from Basketbrawl. It is probably the worst game on the Lynx. Kung Food is cheap but not a good game.
  9. I think the Lynx is making a comeback and there is some crazy prices being bid up for Lynx stuff on Ebay. I think the number of Lynx users and interest are growing. Heck, look at this message board recently. The traffic has been heavy although it will never be near the 2600. You gotta think there are thousands of at least casual users worldwide. I mean you got a lot of interest in Germany, Sweden, England, Italy, Australia and other countries. I just wish that the Lynx will be better represented at Philly Classic than it was last last year. It was really only Carl Forhan of Songbird. No other tables had any Lynx stuff. BTW, how is the Game Gear? I hear they have Super Smash TV for the Game Gear. IS it anything like the arcade?

  11. I think I got the name of the game: Lock On. The problem is I can't find a screen shot to confirm if was the game. It was made by Data East and it came out in 1987. It can't even be found on MAME as it is unemulated. Any help here?
  12. Damn KLOV. I wish they had a search engine that you can find a game by the type of game it is. Flying, sports, etc. or by the year. It would make searching for a game much easier. I'm sorry, but it isn't coming to me.
  13. Towards the late eighties, estimated 1987. I remembered seeing it in the arcade with 720. I will look at klov to get the answer.
  14. To narrow it, it is not Afterburner, Space Harrier or Buck Rodgers though if you remove the person in Space Harrier (A game I like BTW) it approaches the game I am thinking of.
  15. No. Definitely not vector graphics. I remembered the graphics to be somewhat pixellated but colorful. Damn, I wish I could remember the name.
  16. I played an arcade game in the mid to late 80's that I really liked but I cannot remember the name. It was a flying game with a first person perspective and I believe a star wars type controller. It was not made by Atari. It had a a firing crosshair and if you locked on to a target with the cross hair you would fire a missle taking the target out for more points. I remember that when you locked on, a smaller picture of the target in a two color shadow effect appeared at the top of the screen with the point value. I remembered the enemies both ground and air targets to be varied and the backgrounds to be varied, flying over cities and airfields and targeting futuristic buildings. The graphics were somewhat pixellated but colorful. I believe you could not effect the speed or altitutde. It was basically a shooter without the vector graphics a la star wars but with more varied and wide open scenes. I just loved this game but I forgot the game with the passage of time. If I can have link to a screen shot I could identify it. I might be able to get mor specific if asked the right question.
  17. Hold the phone. Before I am prepared to shell out $50(!!!!!) what is meant by a demonstration card? How "playable" is the game? Does it have all the bells and whistles of the arcade game. Can I play a demo of the game? I need more before info before I pay for a game that is more expensive than CURRENT console games.
  18. Pit-fighter is garbage and you stated the reasons for it. I am going to revise my list but slightly as I remembered some really bad games: 1. Pitfighter 2. Krazy Ace Minature Golf- For collectors only. Horribly buggy, unplayable, has only "nine" holes with the last two a repeat of the first two holes. It took Telegames five years to make this??? 3. Super Off Road- Another unplayable Telegames stinker. And they gave us such gems as Desert Strike, European Soccer Challenge and Qix. 4. Basketbrawl 5. Fussball- This could have been NFL Football but this game gets the nod for flickery, boring and unplayability. The mere fact that they chose the title Fussball is all you need to know. What were they trying to appeal in the states with the name of a barroom game? The other games I mentioned before suck, and Hard Drivin and Robosquash are not good games at all, but the above games are te worst of the worst.
  19. Anyone who flies for a living will know the hours of downtime and flighttime just sitting around. I use the Lynx with the battery pack, but it is cumbersome and heavy. For all its faults, GBA is exceptional in its nergy efficiency- two AA batteries for 16 hours. You don't have to lug extra D sized batteries. As for the save feature, I do not believe the Lynx cards can support a save feature beyond the rudimentary. I'm not a technician so I am not a 100% on it. Needless to say, the password system is very inadequate. Yes, a ton of GBA, GC, GB games are crap, but not all and there is good games of all genres that can be had from the Marios to the Zeldas to Donkey Kong to Metal Gear, etc. Yes, it was Atari's fault for the lack of third party support, but the effect is the same. 85 games as opposed to 100s for the GBA. Still, I love the GBA for the games that made it to the portable and I am amazed what the programmers could do with it. It is a shame that the system wasn't allowed to develop because it is apparent that a lot of things would have been done.
  20. Raiden is a good game on the Lynx but it is very hard. Graphically it kicks with nice varied backgrounds and cleanly rendered enemies. It only has five levels and the weapons are not as varied as in the arcade- just bullets and lasers, missles and homing missiles. The lesser enemies kamikaze you like crazy. There is not enough room on the screen to dodge them and the steady stream of bullets that constantly pepper you. I like playing it but you have to ask yourself if it is worth the $40.00 for a good but not exceptional shooter. If you are a Raiden fan, it won't disappoint. If you want a less costly shootem up with a lesser difficulty curve, maybe Gates of Zendocon? Or if you like your shoot em ups tough, maybe Zarlor Mercenary especially if you have friend to play with.
  21. I think the Lynx in some ways is still technologically superior than the GBA. These games. although some of them not the best in terms of gameplay, provided the most jaw dropping effects that still impress even after 10 years: 1. The graphics, scaling and smoothness in S.T.U.N Runner. After all of this time, I still cannot believe they pulled this off on a portable. To create a near spot on translation of this game on the Lynx is amazing. ANd to have it all run smoothly... 2. The stereo sound of Klax. I don't believe GBA can duplicate the sound effects of this game, with the music, the voice with headphones. It is a shame not enough games took advantage of the stereo capabilites of the Lynx 2. 3. The ability to play eight at the same time in Checkered Flag. GBA still cannot pull off more than four. Multiplayer at its best. 4. The scaling effects of Blue Lightning. Amazing to see the ground under you streak past so smoothly, and the rocket trails streaming into the distance. 5. The detail and transparency effect of the walls in Electrocop. This game showed off the graphical capability of the Lynx. It was too bad the gameplay itself was so disappointing. There is more, but these games, showed what was uniquely superior about the Lynx. The limitations of the Lynx that detract from true greatness are as follows: 1. Lack of true save feature. Basically kills any rpg and adventure game. This feature makes the GBA truly shine with games like Zelda, Golden Sun and Metroid. 2. Battery Hog. Really limits the portability of the system. Have to use the cumbersome battery pack and six D sized batteries if you want to spend quality time w/o an adapter. 3. Inability to turn off the backlight and still play the game. Limits the portability of the game. 4. Lack of third party support. Not a technological deficiency but the real killer of the system. The GBA's huge library and backwards compatibility is the real reason for its dominance. 5. Lack of a second joypad/joystick. A pet peeve for me. It would have made playing Robotron and APB a much less frustrating experience.
  22. I answered myself. The exit to eighth level is on level 12 to the right. It was a bitch to find. So, you can get to the end on level 5 and you can bypass levels 3,4 and 10 completely. The ending to Elctrocop is LAME. No boss monster to fight, just meeting your clone brother who tells you the real enemy is Megacorp. That is another reason why this game is disappointing. That and if you do not know the door codes, you have to wait an interminable time for the doors to open. The enemies are pretty easy to destroy and lack diversity. I would have to say this game is up there as the most disappointing the Lynx has other than Hard Drivin, A.P.B. and Cyberball. It is really just a glorified maze game with pretty graphics.
  23. You can get one off of Ebay right now by a vendor named calistoo. I do not know if he posts on Atari Age but he sells Lynxes and its components on Ebay.
  24. Anyone who plays the Swordquest series must want to die a boring death. How about Space Jockey? A pointless borefest. BTW, how can anyone figure out Swordquest. The solution is impossible.
  25. I posted below on how I thought Electrocop was a disappointing game. I play it though it is frustrating me right now. I saw the key to the doors in the cheats section of AtariAge and what is behind them on each level and I know the end of the game is on level 5. I know that to get to level 5 you have to get to level eight, then six, then five. The problem is, I have been playing the damn thing and I don't know how to get to level eight. I thought the exit to it was on level 12, but the exit takes you back to level eleven. Am I missing an exit on level 12? Is it on ten? Level 4? The key does not mention anywhere the exit to level 8. I even did the extreme measure of trying to map the levels just so that I can keep track of things. That is no easy task. It helps me to burn through these levels in this order, 1, 2,3,7,9,11,12. This is where I get stuck. Oh, BTW, there is series of laser gates on level three down a hall way. I struggled through it and found there is absolutely nothing of any worth. What a burn job.
