  1. Why does this game leave me cold? Graphically and musically the game is great. The transparent effect of the walls and enemies are particularly interesting. The floors are rendered great as well. The gameplay, however, is another thing. I thought it was nothing more than a maze game and a frustrating one at that. I realize now the game is not linear and getting to the last level is not the end of the game. If the computers gave more than just skeleton key programs and stasis and instead gave out maps and hints, it would be much less confusing and fun to play. I thought the weapons except the smart bomb were pretty much the same. I liked the armor aspect of the weapons and the fact you can lose them if they take enough hits. However, shooting is linear. Really only shooting left and right. Not a horrible game but pretty graphics does not a great game make.
  2. Interesting. It is interesting to see some of the games had started with different names like Electrocop (Impossible Mission). EGM was perceptive with the ultimate downfall of the Lynx which was lack of third party support and the price. THey were off with the multiplayer as the most the Lynx could do was eight players and everyone needed the cart to play. It is important to note that EGM thought that the system compared favorably to CONSOLES on the market. It points out again how truly advance the system was and is today. They were concerned about arcade quality games which I thought was a strength of the Lynx.
  3. I definitely recommend S.T.U.N. Runner. The fact that they were able to pull this off on the Lynx was amazing enough. If you liked it in the arcade, you will definitely like it on the Lynx as it is surprisingly dead on version from the design to the levels. Even the voice synthesis is accurate. It is also a load of fun. I don't get to play multiplayer that much, but I echo the sentiments above. Warbirds is the best multiplayer game out there. It is compared to the best computer games out there except maybe Quake. Checkered Flag with up to eight (!!) is amazing. Xenophobe is excellent and you get to play the alien hunting players down. Battlewheels is essential multiplayer. Awesome GOlf? Hmm. Excellent game, but it has to be interactive. How about RAMPAGE? You can play up to three and the game is really fun. I really like Rampart where you get to choose between the ships or the fortress.
  4. Pac-Land is the next game I have been playing extensively and after getting used to jumping, I am really surprised how addicting this game is. It doesn't seem like much, sort of reminds me of Pitfall, but it is loaded with hidden bonuses and surprises. I found a warp on the first level second scene which transports you to the third level with 80K extra points and you can get extra points for jumping right before the Breaktime sign. The closer you get to the ground without touching the more points. Are there other hidden stuff out there in the game? THat is all so far. BTW what arcade translations on the Lynx you consider the best? He are my 5 in no particular order: 1. Klax 2. Joust 3. Rampart 4. S.T.U.N. Runner 5. Ms. Pac-Man The five worst: 1. Pit-Fighter 2. Tournament Cyberball 3. Hard Drivin' 4. Super Off Road 5. Basketbrawl I tell you, it is much harder finding the five best considering there are so many good translations out there. I picked the five above because they are the most dead-on and actually improve on the game in some way. Honorable mentions are Pac-Land, Rampage, Xenophobe, Road-Blasters.
  5. I finally found out where NE got his avatar. I thought the avatar was obscene enough, but man you are one sick bastard, NE for choosing it and the game it came from. Blechh!
  6. I live in the North East and we were snowed under today with seven inches of snow. I broke out the Lynx and played Shadow of the Beast. I find the game fun but frustrating. A lot has to do with timing the punches. Also, I find that I start by going left underground rather than being above ground. I don't last long above ground. Has anyone any hints on this game? Can you kill that dragon above ground? A lot of the frustration has to deal with the continues. If you die, you go back to the beginning of the episode ,not from the place where you die. I found the game rough going initially but after repeated failures, I got used to the patterns. Is there a walkthough out there? What are the significance of some of the objects?
  7. For me, there are some Lynx games I want for my collection: 1. Awesome Golf 2. Ninja Gaiden III 3. Missle Command/Asteroids. I got a good collection but these would round it out. BTW, I got Double Dragon recently. It is a good game but highly repetitive. Are there strategies for kicks, jump kicks and punches? Which ones are good for certian situations?
  8. No sin at all. It is a matter of what you are interested in. Taste changes all the time. I fell off the 2600 bandwagon about a eight months ago and sold my system and games. I started collecting the Lynx because I thought it was a great advanced portable that had a limited but great library of games. I can keep my entire collection under the bed. I simply got bored and tired of the 2600. It is all a labor of love and if the love ain't there, time to move on.
  9. Basic Math I hope is the easiest game out there. I agree with space jockey as incredibly easy and extremely stoopid. I think they made a defender clone without any of the stuff that made defender challenging. The hardest game is the game I despise the most, Swordquest Earthworld. I want to find the person who actually found more than three clues in this insane and mind numbing "game". Fireworld as well.
  10. I respectfully disagree about the battery pack. It is a must if you want to play while travelling by plane, especially with all the downtime atthe airport. It is bulky as it holds 6 (!) D sized batteries but it really provides about 17 hours of play. The battery pack can be found on Ebay for reasonable prices. Heck, I see on Ebay a three accessory pack of the battery, pouch and sun shield for $10.00 not including shipping. Of course the pouch and the kit case are musts. I agree with Eric's advice on the games. Warbirds is a great two player game, one of the best multiplayer games out there. One player is OK but not as good as the multiplayer. Dracula is a hard puzzle game with really not much replay value. Joust is a must and worth the $20.00 it is worth on Ebay, etc. I have posted various times about Robotron, most recently on the Raiden thread. Graphically, it is about close to the arcade as you are going to get on a handheld. I find the control scheme highly frustrating because you cannot shoot where you want when you want in any method. This is an absolute must for this game, the most pure "twitch" game in history. I shouldn't have to think about how to fire.
  11. What control scheme do you use in RObotron? I use method C, the one where it is firing all the time and you have to press A and B to rotate the fire. I tell you, it is really disatisfying because you need to fire where you want, when you want and none of the control schemes have it. Not a neay game at all with this control scheme.
  12. How close is Break going to be to Arkanoid? I really liked Arkanoid in the arcades? WIll it have similar powerups and branching paths to various screens? Also, will the player have to hold the Lynx vertically like Klax and Gauntlet? How about Comlynx support?
  13. Desert Strike is indeed an excellent game, pretty deep with its missions and the fact you got to take in alot of information to plan strategy. I like that you have to keep constant vigilance on your ammo, fuel and armor and have to use your radar to find these things to keep the missions going. Unfortunately, this game is a rarity and really can be found from Telegames or once in a blue moon on ebay. I got it from Telegames after I got tired of being outbid by these nuts who put in these $40+ bids. I believe this game is the best one Telegames put out in a list of pretty impressive games. I know that they made QIX, Raiden, European Soccer Challenge, Chess and Double Dragon but I feel Desert Strike is the most entertaining of all of them. Double Dragon is pretty repetitive. I wish Raiden had more than four levels and some more variety with the weapons (more than lasers and bullets). Chess is chess. Qix is dead on recreation of the arcade game, but again it is repetitive. Soccer Chalenge is awesome but I have to give the nod to Desert Strike for its great graphics and gameplay.
  14. You reall can't say Bridge is the worst game. Just because you are not into bridge, does not make the game itself the worst. It is like saying Chessmaster is the worst game beacasue you don't like chess. It really is a good simulation of Bridge and can be used to learn the game and help on bidding. Larry Kaplan designed this game because he was a Bridge maniac who wanted to have a partner to play. Again, Freeway and Laser Blast are absolute bores. At least boxing ends in 2 minutes.
  15. Welcome to the gaming pleasures of the Lynx. Enjoy it and the joys of true backlit color system. Gamewise I thought you made out ok. Blue Lightening is a must, Rygar is really entertaining and Ninja Gaiden is a good if not spectacular fighter. If you are a gamer on a budget, I recommend these following games that are awesome, yet under $10.00: Chips Challenge, Rampart, Crystal Caverns, Shanghai, Klax.
  16. Pitfall II is the best graphically, musically, gameplay for the 2600. River Raid gameplay is amazing especially in the later rounds where you got to be carefule not to waste the gas tanks that become exceedingly rare. Not all Activision games were good. Crummy ones are Boxing, Laser Blast, Freeway (both the later are the worst).
  17. The new website www.klaxworld.com a compendium of all things Klax, gives the Lynx version of the arcade game the best rendition of all versions out there. Klax is easily on everyone's list as the five most essential titles for the Lynx and shows off the stereo capabilities of the Lynx the best of all the games. It is a shame that very few games took advantage of the stereo capabilites of Lynx II (other than Klax what games out there had stereo?). Klax is a dead on version of the arcade game. What is great about the Lynx is that these essential games happen to be the cheapest games on the Lynx. Klax, Shanghai, Rampart (my fave) S.T.U.N Runner, Xybots and many other great ones can be had for less than $10 apiece.
  18. I must again give my thanks and props to Paul for giving me a great deal on three Lynx cards, all new in the box and two of which are rare, all for $9 apiece including shipping. The carts are Double Dragon, European Soccer Challenge and Viking Child. I highly recommend Paul to any Lynx collector. He is very busy, but if you ask he will eventually supply you with his list of games which can be extensive and his prices are very reasonable.
  19. I agree that you have to "Look" at every thing including trash cans, piles of tires and especially those large trash containers. If someone can point me to a walk through of this game it would be much appreciated. It is varied to that extent. I think it is a good 2d platformer in its own right however the lack of a continue or password feature and of course a save which is the norm for the Lynx hurts the game.
  20. I been playing Scrapyard Dog (SD) and it seems like a poor man's Mario. It even has an Italian named protagonist, Louie, to make the comparisons all the more inevitable. It is a platformer of sorts but it has no where near the variety and secrets of Mario deluxe or Mario Advance. The can throwing is also a little problematic. I swear I nailed a gun firing wolf many a time but it just went through the sucka. The enemies are also kinda boring. Crap dropping birds, rats, gun toting wolves and kitties oh my. There is also hidden things in trees, signs, washing machines and trash containers but not hidden worlds like the Mario series. Also, no continues mean that you have to go through the previous levels to get to where you were before. Still, it is a fun game to play and if you can get it for $10 or less, it would make a good addition to your collection.
  21. Sorry, I posted a long while back on how Tutankham was a disappointment especially compared to the arcade. Blah graphics, imprecise controls where you got to be careful or else you keep moving into things, a change in the scrolling but not the firing mechanism which makes it impossible to get things without a flash. Not the best translation out there.
  22. The lack of an installed backlight is a real problem on the Gameboy Advance. The screen is way too dark for such games like Castlevania Circle of the Moon. I can't believe that the cost of the backlight is too great as you can actually get a new Advance with an Afterburner installed through the internet for $110.00. I am sure that Nintendo could have installed them with a price tag under $100.00. Also, the battery life with the Afterburner is not appreciably less than w/o. Nintendo really did the gamer a disservice by not including a backlight that you can turn off or adjust. Still, the Advance's role playing and platform games are unparralled on any portable.
  23. I have to revise my choice for hardest game. Raiden is hard but not so impossible that you can't get it through it. I think Robotron is very hard because of the control scheme. You really need a second joystick for the firing. Zarlor Mercenary is really tough in one player as well.
  24. I finally got through the fourth screen w/o expereiencing the glitch. The final boss is actually two rolling things that look and fire like the first level bosses. All they do is move back and forth firing in set directions. Pretty easy to kill. The bosses in Raiden are disappointing. Getting to them is a bitch but once you do, they are not too tough. THe hardest is the third level as there just is not enough room between you and the boss to dodge the stream of bullets. The second boss is the second toughest but still if you stay to the far ends while it is shhoting at you, you should be ok. With the max powered laser, it makes short work of all of these bosses. If you got max lasers and homing missles, you are one powerful stud. Highest score: 125,000
