  1. If you though flicker was bad on Buck Rogers, Congo Bongo will burn your retinas. Just a game that should not have been attempted on the 2600 given its limitations. Still, Sega made two of most fave games in Star Trek and Thunderground. THe replay value and depth on both games were awesome. Stan raises a good point on Imagic games. THey had a style to them that was unique. You knew by looking at their games it was an Imagic game. I think they made the most colorful games of any game company.
  2. Sega definitely had some good games but don't forget some clunkers that should not have been made. I mean Congo Bongo, Sub Scan (that makes Air Sea Battle look deep). You like Tac Scan? I thought it was OK. All and all, Imagic brought it to the table. And not just for the 2600. I remember I had a Texas Instrument computer and I played a game called Microsurgeon from Imagic. A game where you went into the body and destroyed tumors, tape worms and the like. Fun stuff.
  3. I got a Sega Super Wide Gear Magnifier from PhillyClassic for $5 and I found out that the magnifier does not fit the LynxII. The Lynx II is simply too thick and wide to support the screen. Oh, well. If you have a Lynx I and want a magnifier, I would be willing to sell it or trade it. I wouldn't mind a loose Rygar, Zarlor Mercenary, Shadow of the Beast or Warbirds.
  4. Think of the game in its own right and you will find it is one of the better adventure and puzzle games on the 2600. The game was thought provoking and you had to use your brain. Also, you get a sense of accomplishment and reward when you finish the game. That makes it a good game and a bazillion times better than those horrendous Swordquest games which provides neither fun, accomplishment and especially reward.
  5. 20th Century Fox? Hmm. I just don't think they had the quality games, though I'll take em over Apollo and U.S. Games. I don't remember any games of any distinction with the Fox. Heck, CBS games were better on the whole with Mountain King and Wizard of Wor. I remeber I had one game from Fox, Crypts of Chaos and I thought that game was pretty crummy. I thought Sega had a couple of good games with Star Trek and Thunderground (a really good game that should get its due) and the art was OK. I just thought Imagic was a class operation from the games to the manuals.
  6. Imagic. The games were better, more original, the box and cartridge design was better, has a good blend of commons and more rare but not too rare, if you are into that thing (I'm not). There is not a really bad game in the lot. Parker Bros had some real stinkeroos (Amidar, Super Cobra) but some good ones. Coleco, well, with due respects to some posters, their games were poor and they were intentionally so their cartridges and art are butt ugly.
  7. Sorry that you did not find us. I was there on Friday and the last two hours on Saturday. My drive was a whopping 15 miles from my home in the Philly burbs. I wanted to see you. I did see the AtariAge table and got a name tag. I got to see the famous StanJr. and Tempest and was able to talk in length with Stan. I really enjoyed talking the games with Stan and it was good to see that Stan was just as offended about how bad Star Wars Episode I felt. BTW, I never said that Berzerk was a BAD game, just that it is very repetitive and, like Pac-Man, I know they could have made it better. I loved the free arcade and I was graivtating towards the Sinistar game. That game always got the juices moving. Frenzy was there and so was Pleides, a game I liked as a kid but found it a rather boring Phoenix knockoff now. What got me was the inordinate number of handheld games being sold there. I mean there was a vendor just dedicated to the sale of handhelds like the Merlin, Zaxxon, Pac-Man (the ones that look like minature Arcade games) and even the head to head baseball and Coleco football I had as a kid. THere was also a lot of Vectrex games being sold. I was very disappointed that there were very few Atari Lynx games. It was really SOngbird and one table that had three Lynx titles, thats it. All and all, I enjoyed reliving my youth at the show and I especially enjoyed talking to the AtariAge organiazers and posters.
  8. I never thought they can pull this off on the 2600 but I thought Crossbow was pretty faithful to the Arcade game. It is amazing that this is so as the arcade was a gun game. Even the scoring after the rounds is faithful. This game is very hard even in its easier modes.
  9. I know that some put Berzerk as their favorite. I can't for the simple reason that the robots can not fire diagnolly. That removes a huge element and challenge from the gameplay. That and the six mazes only and the result is a game that gets pretty repetitive quickly.
  10. Parker Bros Tutankham is a huge letdown compared to the arcade. There really is not much going on in the 2600 version and the graphics are really blocky and lack color. The great thing about the arcade was that it was really manic with all those creatures coming at you. Like Robotron except you had to be real careful going vertical because you could only fire horizontally. The 2600 really didn't have this feeling. Probably the worst arcade translation from PB other than Super Cobra.
  11. Since I live 20 minutes from the Valley Forge COnvention center, it is pretty easy for me to attend. I will sport a bergbros name tag. BTW, don't go to Dave and Busters for dinner. The food is absolutely awful. Just go for the games. For food, try South Street or Chestnut Street between Front and Fourth. They are loaded with great restaurants that are close to D & B from Cheesteaks to Afghani Food.
  12. I realize that there are magnifiers for the Sega Game Gear that are made by manufacturers other than Sega. For example, there is one made by a company called Haki that makes one for the Game Gear. Would these also fit on the Lynx? Can any Magnifier made for the Gear work for the Lynx or LynxII?
  13. I must agree with the peanut gallery. THere is no "point" to Swordquest, even less now that the ill conceived contest has been long gone. There was absolutely no rhyme or reason to placing the objects in the first two games as you can see in the solutions. Waterworld at least gave you clues to placing the objects and you could keep track of them with paper and pencil. The absolutely most damning thing about the series was there was no ending to the games once you succesfully placed the objects. For all the time you spent slaving away at these impossible games playing really boring tasks that could be bypassed for the most part, you were "rewarded" with NOTHING. No kick butt final scene, no special treasure room or object of power. I despise Swordquest. Anyone who puts this game as their favorite must hate life itself. For a good adventur game on the Atari, try Adventure of course or Raiders of the Lost Ark.
  14. It is interesting that the Lynx did not have this type of accessory. Gunstar, how does the magnifier attach on the Lynx? Also, there are other magnifiers out there that are for other games, for example the Gameboy Advanced has one? Would any of these fit the Lynx?
  15. We all love the the games and the 2600, but was the company itself a white knight or a badly run company that squelched programmers and creativity? I read some excerpts from the History of Videogames, a truly amazing book, and there is a lot of skeletons in the closet. I know you guys have heard it before, but, what do you guys think of the company itself? This is the company that did not credit their programmers for a long time, was owned by many accounts one of the nastiest and cruel men of all time in JAck Tramiel, they basically mismanaged the release of the Lynx, a hand held that was ahead of its time, and they fired thousands of people when Tramiel took over and had so many departments that worked against each other that the company was run into the ground within ten years. Are you a fan of the systems but not the company? What is the legacy of this company? What lessons can be learned from its demise?
  16. Interesting you feel Awesome Golf is not good as Mr. Jung put that game in his top ten. I tell you, I can't get Rampart out of my Lynx. The concept is so simple, yet original and deep with many strategy elements. It is challenging yet has a nice gradual learning curve. Everything has importance and an impact on the game, from your choice of castle, placement of cannons and blocks, to who you fire on and when. Rampart is just good on many levels.
  17. I have a better idea. Buy a lynx and a bunch of games for $60.00. An Atari portable that is more powerful than the 2600.
  18. I agree that opinions are like tastes. I guess an emulator and pre-trying the games are the best bet. Since you were good on your take on Rygar and Shadow of the Beast, I need some two cents on Zarlor Mercenary. It looks good but it only has six levels. That does not sound like much replay value to me. Maybe I should throw out games like that Mike Myers character in Coffee Talk. Awesome Golf is not Awesome or Golf. Discuss.
  19. I have been reading Jung's review of Atari Lynx games on Electric Escapes website (Administrators, I think a link to this site is in order). I think his reviews are generally on target however I disagreed with his review of Robotron when he said the firing controls were acceptable. Do you believe this guys reviews are reliable? What did you think of his review of Electrocop and California Games? He slams them but some posters list these games as their favorites. Of course, I would get second opinions from this site where necessary. Speaking of second opinions, I like some input on the games Rygar and Shadow of the Beast. I like Rygar in the arcades, however I understand that there are some differences between the Lynx and the arcade. Shadow of the Beast I understand is really hard. Is it worth while?
  20. I got this game for the Lynx and I love the graphics and sound however I really am disappointed with the firing controls. It is very hard to get used to and it really is disatisfying considering that Robotron is the ultimate twitch game. You shoild be able to fire anywhere in any direction at the flick of a button and with these controls I have to constantly think of how to fire and it only sweeps in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion. Robotron is hard as it is without having to worry about a flawed firing concept. Too bad they didn't make the lynx with two touch pads.
  21. Just an update that I have two offers of $100.00 each. I will take the earlier of equal offers. Again, thanks for all of your feedback and inquiries.
  22. Thank you for your kind comments. I would like to add that I would post the highest bid per day on this thread without naming the high bidder to protect confidentiality but give prospective bidders the high price. I would add that I will try to find actual shipping. I am annoyed at some Ebay vendors that give a low starting price yet charge high shipping and handling charges.
  23. Hello fellow Atarians. After much anguish and soul searching, I have decided to sell my Black 2600. I just don't have time to collect and play anymore and I want to find a good home for the syatem that gave me so much joy and memories over the years. I am a member of Ebay, however, I'd rather sell my system to those who frequent Atari Age because I respect your love and knowledge of all things Atari and I am especially appreciative of the advice and counsel all of you have given me. Again, the system is a black four switch 2600 with a new Radio Shack RF transformer, two power adapters, one joystick, two REMOTE CONTROL joysticks with the remote control box, two sets of paddle controllers( one in good working order, the other one one of the paddles came off, I think it can be put together). All in good working order except where noted above. I will throw in two new 9 volt batteries to use with the remote control joysticks. Also have the owners manual. I have 67 games, loose, except for Crystal Castles and Gravitar which are in the boxes and instructions. Not shrink wrapped but in near mint condition. My games are a good blend of commons, rares, no doubles. These have instructions: Atlantis Berzerk Bridge (With the partner bid guide) Crypts of Chaos (Rare) Decathalon Defender Dragonfire Enduro Frogger Frontline Haunted House Infiltrate Joust Keystone Kapers Mario Brothers Missle Command Montezuma's Revenge (Rare) Moon Patrol Mountain King Ms. Pac Man Pac Man Pitfall Pitfall II Popeye Q Bert Realsports Baseball Realsports Football River Raid Robot Tank Space Jockey Spider Fighter Spider Man Stampede Star Raiders (With the touchpad!) Star Trek (No plastic overlay) Stargate Strategy X (Konami- Rare) Super Challenge Baseball (M Network) Super Cobra Swordquest Earth World (No comic book) Tac Scan Tennis Thunderground Vanguard Wizard of Wor Yars Revenge (With Comic Book) Zaxxon These do not come with instructions: Combat Boxing (Activision) Bump N' Jump (Rare) Centipede E.T. Jr. Pac Man Laser Gates (A rarer Imagic game) Millipede Moonsweeper Night Driver Phoenix Riddle of the Sphinx Solaris Star Voyager Star Wars Arcade Game (Rare Parker Bros) Super Breakout (Telegames) Tutankham Video Pinball I also have an Imagic Catalog 700500-1 Rev A. and Atari Blue Logbook (fair condition) I will keep this sale open for seven days until 3-31 6:00 P.M. EDT and I will entertain the best offer, however the minimum I am asking for all of this is $85.00 plus shipping. I will post each day what is Payment is by check/ cashiers check, money order. I am more than happy to answer any questions you may have. My email address is bergbros@philly.infi.net. Thank you for your interest. I hope to see you at the Philly Classic at the Valley Forge.
  24. I live about 20 minutes from The Valley Forge Convention so this will not be a problem for me. This will be my first convention. I hope there will be a lot of Lynx stuff as I really am digging the Lynx games and the system. I hope to see all of you who will attend. Maybe we should be wearing name tags with our message board monikers on them.
  25. I know this is a pretty boring topic. I got a Lynx w/o the instruction manual and I need to know where I can get one. Thanks.
