Sega Light Phaser to 7800 - Adventures in Fixing Old Crap (PIC HEAVY)
Dopy25 replied to DrVenkman's topic in Atari 7800
Not sure about db9, but it looks like they are using a Pi to communicate with Ps1 & Ps2. The PS2 has usb but I know the PS1 does not so I have no idea how they are implementing that but I am sure the output on the pi can be converted to the necessary data lines for Atari if it can be done for PS1. I guess you'd just need to use a pi as a converter. -
Sega Light Phaser to 7800 - Adventures in Fixing Old Crap (PIC HEAVY)
Dopy25 replied to DrVenkman's topic in Atari 7800
Oh totally understand. It's a simple circuit for sure, and the 2 required components cost less than a single IC. I was able to get it working and fit the components into a db9 shell with an adapter for sega controllers as well. I was just wondering about the possibility of using a single component to minimize space usage inside the shell. It would also make for the possibility to redraw the board used for the sega-atari conversion and add an surface mount inverter to the mix and potentially have a single in and out for the whole thing. Right now I feel like my adapter looks janky, but it does work. I just have to have a switch to go between the controller and light phaser inputs. I didn't mean to diminish what you did. I seriously love your board. I've never made one in my life but I like to modify stuffs. -
Sega Light Phaser to 7800 - Adventures in Fixing Old Crap (PIC HEAVY)

That's super sweet! This whole thing got me thinking and I looked around for other methods and found this one: http://www94.pair.com/jsoper/7800_gun_adap.html I'm not too sure how a 7404 inverter would compare besides cost but it seems entirely possible to do with less parts. Do you have any experience with these kinds of inverters? The schematic linked shows only 4 pins used, and only 2 are data. Could a smaller inverter do the same thing? I wonder if this guy only had a 7404 on hand or if they were cheaper when it was written. I made an adapter with the same information you found, but not with the super cool board you made. For real dude. That's sick. I'm wondering about minimizing and using an inverter ic. Do you have any thoughts on that? -

I have a harmony for the 2600 so I have been able to test my project using that, but would really like to get my hands on any shooter game for the 7800 side itself. I am working on an adapter with support for Sega controllers and the Light Phaser. It works in it's current state, but I can only test it on the one* game on the 2600 that uses it. The rest of the games I have do not have LP/LG functionality. If anyone has any extra, or one they would like to sell for a low cost, I appreciate it. I am holding out for a concerto but would really like to put what I am working on to good use before too long. My location: California, USA

Three Articles this weekend on Atari 7800 Forever
Dopy25 replied to Cousin Vinnie's topic in Atari 7800
Try it with a sega controller. I'm still new to all of this but from what I understand, there may be a few homebrews written to support a sega controller natively. I think that it is possible to cause issues with original hardware but I am not sure. Might be worth a shot to narrow out. -

Sounds like a fun time for sure! Glad you got it worked out. I picked up a light phaser as well and have been working on an adapter. It seems the information you may have found was a tad incoherent. I thought the adapter I made was bunk as well and was driving me nuts, arg. I too had an issue with the cable and a couple of the ceramic caps seem toast. They just look out of sorts. I ordered some replacements based on the schematic on smspower. 3 of them have a white powder on them and look like they've failed. The gun itself did work but super intermittent. I figured out the wiring in my cable was junk but I'm going to replace those caps when they come in the mail. I was able to remove the grommet and replace it further on down the cable. I like the original look of it so I wanted to keep it on there. Enjoy! -
Still waiting for a friend to bring my 3d printed mount for the UAV itself but I got it in and am using a 7pin S-Video port and adapter. The adapter I bought has 4pin S-Video, comp, and single audio. The audio appears to be intended for digital out, but it is just an RCA jack so it works perfect. Audio has it's own ground but upon installing I can see that it really doesn't matter. I initially installed a header because I was unsure about mounting to the case or the board so my wires are a bit long at this point. I may take off the header and trim the wires down to look nice because the jack is soldered to the board. I used @-^CrossBow^- suggestion to remove part of the solder mask and it worked great. I removed the switch and soldered it to channel 3 only because realistically I have never put any RF input on channel 4. My port took it's place. I have a flat piece of shrink tubing between the jack and the board so it does not rest on the solder points of the switch. It also have me enough room in the hole for my S-video adapter to fit. I had enough of a solder blob to hold the jack perfectly so I don't seem to need any adhesive or epoxy to hold it in place. Pics incoming

Absolutely great! I posted a wanted listing and oakcity came to the rescue. He sent me a couple 7800 joysticks. One of them even still had the factory plastic on the metal! I would absolutely buy anything from oak city if I needed or wanted it. Thanks again!

Hello everyone. This project was the result of me looking for a way to modify my Genesis controller for use on the 7800. I had an extra one and had no 7800 controllers. I ended up making a 7800 compatible controller, but it rendered the sega controller almost useless as a genesis controller. I went back to looking and found that another user had created a board for this exact purpose. I reached out to request use, and it ended up that I was able to purchase a batch of components to make 15 adapters. I am keeping 2 for myself so I am able to sell the remaining 13 here. I will not post on ebay. These are for this community only. The adapter is compatible with 3 or 6 button controllers as well as 2 button Sega Master System controllers. I know because I have personally tested these 3 controllers. It is also known that this adapter should work with other Sega (genesis) branded controllers. I do not know if it will work with the SMS joystick but I am told it works with Genesis arcade sticks and the concept is the same. or light gun, but at this point I have no reason to believe it not. I picked up an SMS light gun locally (score for $10) but I'm still not sure whether or not it works with the adapter. I only have a harmony cart for the 2 2600 games it works with and no supported 7800 games. The light phaser does cause firing animation on screen when pointed at it the screen, but I only have a crappy CRT to test (without svideo) and the RF on my 7800 is garbage. I'm waiting on confirmation from one buyer on whether or not it works for them but I still don't have a solid answer. EDIT: SMS light guns do not work with the adapter in it's current state but I am working on adding the functionality. It will have a toggle switch to alternate between controllers and the light phaser. I am waiting on switches small enough to fit in the enclosure but will post my results when complete, probably by this next weekend. In the meantime, if you only want an adapter for controllers, please let me know. If you prefer to wait, I should the design worked out and have a few done by the weekend. It will be an option in the final design. End Edit Second EDIT: Updated optional design added. The adapter now fully supports SMS light phasers. I have added a switch to toggle between SMS and controller functions. Images below identify how to use the switch. Light Phaser functionality will add $10 USD. See below for totals. BEST Scenario for using Light Gun with multi cart game (Harmony tested, not Concerto or Dragonfly): 1) leave switch in "OFF" position and choose your game. Let it load. 2) move switch to "ON" position (which is the side the LG dongle is on) You can put a dot on that side with a marker if you want. 3) fire at screen. LG mode is on. You must power cycle with the switch in the "OFF" position and the LG disconnected in order to use a controller. END EDIT If you are buying one right now, please be prepared for it to work with controllers and not the light gun. It is also known that these will not work with a wireless 8bitdo controller and adapter. I'm sure it has something to do with the 5v line on the 7800 being another input line but there's nothing I can do about it. I completed the adapter boards themselves but started to attach the cables before realizing that some of you may want a longer cord attached. I can provide up to 6 feet of length but the ones I have attached right now are about 6 inches. Please let me know if you prefer the cable itself to be longer than that or that will be the default. As for cost: I am still new to selling anything here so I do not expect to receive anywhere near the cost of the machine produced ones of similar type, or even ones for sale in the store. I do however put everything together by hand and am still new to surface mount components. I think they look great though. You be the judge. I am only selling up to 13 and will have no other batches after this. I made that many because it was economic to purchase in that large of a batch as opposed to making 2 for myself and having some leftover components. Please send PM with request and I will let you know where to send payments. Goods and services are ok but if you want to leave a "tip", friends and family is great. (not an actual tip, btw, just not paying the fees to receive money). I think $20 shipped in the US is reasonable, so that will be the cost. If you are outside of the US, we can discuss shipping but it may be cheaper to go other routes. Sega to 7800 adapter with added SMS Light Phaser functionality is $30 total. Please identify length & whether or not you want controller only, or controller + Light Gun capabilities.

It works with genesis and SMS. On genesis, b&c buttons are 1&2. Sms is exactly how you'd expect. Price will be around $20 shipped in the US. I'd hold tight for that NES pad too. I got the 7800 controllers from oakcity and they were excellent. Just thought I'd mention the adapter as an alternative. I'm still working on them for the time being so I don't want to post yet.
-
If that doesn't work out, let me know if you are interested in a sega to 7800 adapter. I am building a few and will have extras. Should be in their own post soon enough.
-
Good point but no problem at all. It comes in the mail tomorrow. As long as the Svideo pins are not sharing a ground with one of the rca jacks, I will be happy.
-
Close. I bought a dongle that was meant for a dell laptop 7 pin s-video port. The 4 svideo pins are in the same exact spot as a 4 pin svideo and can be used as such. The other pins are most likely populated with other video signals on a dell laptop (or other graphics card) but I am hoping they are independently wired so I can repurpose them as audio signals rendering the dongle, s-video, composite, and audio. I have no idea how it is wired currently but I am hoping they at least don't all share the same ground. I will let you know when the dongle arrives. Should be here tomorrow. I bought it on ebay for a buck. Worst case scenario I can cut the male 7 pin end off and solder on the inside of my 7800. Soldering upside down is a great idea, but I was looking forward to retaining RF if I ever want to feel super nostalgic. The issue is that my RF is basically garbage so I may never use it, which does give me the opportunity to remove it altogether. I still can't find the port by itself, even if it's not a female cable end. I don't know what I am missing in my search.

Same here, please! Sign me up as well. I spaced when I read your rules and realized that I probably should say something during the allotted time frame. haha. -
Never would have thought about that. Mine go in the trash. Kinda feel dumb now. So old ethernet cables work great for internal mods?
-
I noticed that ebay likes to change the category on me randomly. Is it picking a specific category for you that that game is not in?
-
I think I do well with soldering but I guess I'm not sure what I'm talking about with core on the wire. It was literally solid copper wire. It came with the av mod I bought on ebay for my 2600 but was extra. The wire is very sturdy and didn't have much give in it so it broke off at the top when I went to bend it into place. I bought some pretty flexible wire and although it may seem brittle I don't think it will snap like the other. Edit: This is the wire I bought: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KQ2LHFI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_CABT4MARCTS3FXPK1ZCF?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

haha. It looks beautiful on screen, but I don't like the wiring I used so I bought more and will be redoing the mod. I used solid core wire the first time and it's brittle as hell. It was left over from the 2600 jr mod. I bough some 28 gauge wire for the data lines. I have some thicker wire for 5v & ground but the wire I used for the data and color looked like butts and I hated it. It wasn't clean enough even though the solder looked good.

It's crazy how those towers are still active. I'm sooooo close to going for the Linux box for my daughter. That would be a huge upgrade for her and much faster than her school laptop. I'm debating. -
Sounds like the color for the 7800 color is loose. Same thing happened to me. It broke while moving around the uav. Open it up and check for a broken solder joint from the 6th or 7th pin from the end. It might be broken there, or on the UAV itself. My 7800 games were black and white and I thought I did something wrong until I realized my wire was broke.

Sorry to snipe on the OP, buy by any chance do you have any old msi cards with a stupid 7 pin svideo that comes off of the card as a cable? Like this:
