  1. I almost wished it were not. Ahhh, if I could use an Atari 2600 joystick on my modern console
  2. Todays controllers are the same thing, they feel different and people prefer one over the other but they ALL have a pad and some analog sticks. Consider the old days when you see Intellivision, Atari, Colecovision and even the Vectrex. All very different. I prefer Atari 2600 and NES joysticks. They are COMPLETELY different controllers. This thread was about "why does Sony use symbols instead of letters?" Like I posted before: If its a letter, number or goofy symbol, who cares? Take 3 minutes of time, memorize the buttons and move on with your life. The controllers overall these days are basically the same in structure, its what feels and controls right for the individual. I like Xbox and Ps2 controllers personally and dislike the Gamecube's somewhat.
  3. Who cares whether its a letter or number or picture?!?! Whats the difference? They are all "symbols" on the button! Memorize the thing and move on!!!
  4. The biggest impact was COMBAT It was the first ever game I played on a TV set besides Pong and I was blown away. I was too young to visit arcades. Combat was packaged with the Atari unit and a friend introduced to the most amazing TV toy. I couldn't beleive it was in color and the icons on the screen actually looked liked little tanks. I thought, what is this system, ATARI?? Wow, I HAVE to get an Atari! From that point on I seeked out arcade rooms when I was allowed to and bought Atari games once a month. (Thanks Dad!)
  5. I have 3 of each: Best: Atari, Activision, Imagic, Worst: Mythicon, US Games, Data Age Very well done games (not my favorites) Atari: Ms. Pac-Man Activision: Pitfall or H.E.R.O Imagic: Atlantis or Demon Attack Very badly done games: Mythicon: Firefly or Sorcerer US Games: Entombed Data Age: Bugs
  6. Space Invaders on the 2600 Asteroids in the Arcade.
  7. I also have the game and was contemplating on playing it. I haven't yet and maybe I never will but I think I'll hold onto it since I'm a Dragon Warrior fan.
  8. For modern systems, the best thing to do if you have the money is to buy a flat-screen TV. NOT a plasma (the thin expensive TV's but those are great too) The picture quality when I did a comparison using straight AV cables for the PS2 on a normal picture tube television was leaps and bounds better on a flatscreen. When I switched to S-Video it was even better than that, not to mention the compenent video you can use if you spend a little more Here's my setup: 20" Toshiba Flatscreen (129$ open box at Best Buy) 4-port videogame AV switchbox ($15) PS2 - Component connection directly to TV Gamecube - S-Video connection directly to TV Dreamcast - AV connection to 4-port switchbox NES - AV connection to 4-port switchbox SNES - AV connection to 4-port switchbox Colecovision - RF SHIELDED CABLE+Adapter directly to TV Atari 2600 - use the same RF SHIELDED CABLE+Adapter directly to TV Sega Genesis - use the same RF SHIELDED CABLE+Adapter directly to TV Commodore 64 - use the same RF SHIELDED CABLE+Adapter directly to TV I simply switch the cables in the back of the TV to the approriate console, I leave the RF adaptor plugged in the back of the TV. I label the cables. The TV itself is already loaded with AV and S-Video inputs and one component so the TV takes care of a lot of it to begin with. AC Power: Simply do not turn everything on at once. Consider playing on at least Flatscreen, I will never go back to the old TV's now, I cannot stop recommending it if you love video games. Its a WHOLE new experience.
  9. Sound will never work in 2000 or XP without an emulation program like VDMsound. I also have a seperate PC for old PC games. The only thing is you have to deal with conventional memory, config.sys and autoexec.bat once again.
  10. Thanks a lot. Although the links don't work anymore. I will search for those.
  11. I have the PS2 version which I finished a while back. It is not Wizardry 8 like the PC version. The ending was great and you could continue the adventure again with the same charactersequipment. It was great. I remember how exciting it was when you first ran into Caramon or Tanis.
  12. It would help. But I'm a little more concerned about difficulty Example: Mothers, kids, girlfriends, fathers, very old brothers. All of these who cannot get past level 2 on Spyro the dragon. Spyro the dragon should have a difficulty rating on it. More specifically, my older sister has her own PS2 apart from mine and she digs platform games. Problem is, over half of them are too hard for her and she simply gives up and not only that, she stopped buying games altogether about a year ago. Hint-books, guides won't help and trying to get someone like that to use a cheat device is like trying to have your grandma play tackle football. One good thing I noticed: GAMESPOT.COM rates the difficulty of games in their reviews. Pretty good but again its from the reviewers standpoint.
  13. What would be so superior? Astrosmash: widescreen with HD support, stereo surround with extra lighting effects?
  14. The Epyx games were my favorite back in the day! You have to be living back then and appreciate the depth these games had as compared to other Coleco games. Jumpman Jr is pretty much perfect as compared to its computer (Apple) version back then.
  15. 6 switch Sears model. Its the first one I ever had
  16. Right. I remember the old thread mentioned Colecovison or Commodore64 games as a possibility. I also hope they have hi-score saves in the next one. I hope its not a dead project since I haven't heard anything for a long while...
  17. Its been a while since I've seen anything about the sequel. Anyone know if plans are still there to make one? I think someone named Klov was here from Activision discussing this about 5 or 6 months ago. Is the project still alive?
  18. Your right. Its not really 8, its the Forsaken Lands, but to me it might as well be. I highly recommend the game. Its a refreshing breather from the more common console RPG's out there. It was definitely worth the money, though it did have a few faults here and there. (Its HARD just like the old ones) Each levelmaze is pretty much a deathtrap. Speaking of old ones, the old Wizardry games were near impossible to finish, I have not met anyone who's claimed that throne. Although the archives do come with the cluebooks and each level is mapped for you so it should be easier these days. Other games I finished which Tyranthraxus mentioned: Might & Magic 1 Ultima's 1-5 and 7 and 9 AD&D Pool of Radiance Curse of the Azure Bonds Secret of the Silver Blades and all the Dragonlance games except for Dark Queen of Krynn. I never finished the Eye of the Beholder games, though I hear they were great games too.
  19. Anyone can help me find the Pong unit in picture pong04.jpg? I'd like to go hunting for it but don't know what name to search for. I'm sure there were other non-radio shack units that looked like that one. If not then do I search for "Radio shack pong"? Mine used to have blue dials and I believe it was from Sears but I may be wrong.
  20. Yup, graph paper, pencil and a notepad for notes. I had a big notebook filled with what every personcreature said in the old Ultima games when I used to play them on the C64
  21. Hero and Megamania ("it'll drive you insane")
  22. Its reaalllllllly outdated. I have a hard time playing it right now cause its just so old. The first Wizardy was released around 1980 or 81 if I recall so expect a lot of black and white and shades of magenta graphics. I have NOT tried Wizardry VII yet from this collection and I have a funny feeling their might be problems with that one as it featured sound and as we all know, no DOS game sounds work in XP. Unless you successfully use VDMsound or something like that... (Wizardry 8 for the PS2 was awesome. I had a great time playing it. It was definitely old-school RPG fun. But thats for another thread...)
  23. You will want "The Ultimate Wizardry Archives" for the PC released in 1998. It works fine on my XP system and comes with all the manuals and hintbooks in PDF form. Read about it here: http://www.mobygames.com/game/sheet/gameId,1367/ That website also has some links so you can bidbuy it.
  24. Exactly my thoughts. The least they could have done was change colors!!
