I am not going to say my score is good, but I just wanted to say that I can get 3,270 in Mappy without even trying within 30 seconds. Easy one to do.
Donkey Kong Jr. was pretty easy as well. On my third try I got 2500 in about 25-26 seconds. Just have to get the right start.. sometimes you will get start off where the one guy will go down the rope and you can hit him with fruit, as well as grabbing the three or so fruit. Sometimes you can get lucky and get the red guy with the left fruit, then jump across and get the next guy with fruit on right.
Wow. DKJ took me about a dozen tries - and this is AFTER seeing the show where the contestant does it successfully, so I basically knew what to do. You are a stronger DKJ'er than I.
I agree that Mappy isn't too hard. There are patterns that will enable you to get 6,000 or more, but I've forgotten them. It helps if you can catch the big cat hiding behind one of the prizes.

Many thanks!!You can now edit the first post of this thread. Also, here are some of my own personal "scores to beat." They are NOT actual scores from the show, nor are they averages of 20+ players; they're just scores that give me a good run for the money. You might find them too easy or too hard, but feel free to try them.

I would LOVE to see a new version of Starcade. Do you mean with modern day games, or retro games? Maybe a little of both...I used to love this show. Be nice if they had a 2008 version introducing us to the games now as they used to then.By the way, this guy easily beats the Sinistar score with time to spare. It took me about an hour's worth of trying. I suck.
-
Geoff was also excellent in Jackpot, Treasure Hunt and the CA Lottery's Big Spin. Great host.
Come to think of it, Sinistar was his favorite game. Maybe Starcade took 20 of HIS playings and came up with the score to beat.
-
Just added the scores for two more games. I swear Sinistar took me almost 100 tries before I got it. "Average of 20 players," yeah right. How about "the producers were on a budget and needed people to lose."
Of course, the Tazzmania score is from the olden days when the scores were actually beatable, and I have never come close.
-
Just noticed it has Tazzmania...the one game I cannot beat the Starcade challenge at (1,203 points in 30 seconds). Can you???
-
wait no Galaga either
The highest score I've seen on the show in 30 seconds is 5,310...can you beat it?

By the way, here's my score from my first try at Bubbles: 11,300. Ouch.
-
All that you would have to do to beat the score for Donkey Kong is smash one barrel or jump over 3. If you can't get 300 points in Donkey Kong in 30 seconds then you have issues.
LOL! I think that's because the score is from one of the earlier (Mark Richards) shows, and the "20 players" probably had no clue how to play the game. If they did DK in the Geoff Edwards era, when everyone and his uncle knew the game, I'm sure the score would have been way higher.
The DK Jr. score is actually pretty tough. I played it at CA Extreme this summer and missed it by 15 points.

-
Starcade.tv is posting new episodes one at a time, so I was able to add a score for Bubbles. If anyone knows what the score is for Scramble (I missed it), please let me know. It's on show #92, Sean Doppie vs Joe Blea.
-
My main beef with the DVD version is that it has a noticeable skip after every move (correct or incorrect). I guess that's how DVD players work, but it really detracted from the experience for me.
Also, the 3-d effect has to be "simulated" with red/blue glasses, double imaging, and a weird moving graphic in the background that looks sort of like a tunnel if you use your imagination. I know I can't expect it to be the same as the arcade, but I don't think this setup added any 3-d feel at all.
-
I have to wonder, how you discovered this....and how many more games are unlockable in that machine?
Well, I cheated...I found out by accident online. Can't remember the exact site but I saw the tip and thought...ooh, that's neat. A bummer the patterns don't work.
I don't think there are any other games to unlock...but that would have been awesome if Midway had done that!
By the way, there's a theater around here that has the machine set at turbo. I believe the high score on the hidden Pac-Man game is 999,990.
-
Don't know if this counts, but if you can find one of the newer Ms Pacman/Galaga combo machines, there's a secret code that will let you play regular Pacman. Insert coins, tap the joystick UUU,DDD,LRLRL and you should hear the "bonus life" sound from Pacman. Then start the game. Impress your friends!
-
I know the topic is Hard Drivin but...this is just too freaky on the Cyberball thing.
if you play it like real football your fine, oh and don't run the ball. if you let the receivers run their routes passing is a breeze, and running the ball with the QB is fine too, especially to the left, if the blockers do their job and don't let the defense through, you can easily run for 5-10 yards but only certain plays will your blockers allow you to do this. Playing defense is easy too, just go into long defense every play, choose a corner as your defender and hope you picked the side the offense is throwing too, then pass interfere like it's nobodies business, their's no penalties so any pass you interfere on will either go incomplete or for short gain.Holy COW. Atari5200, have you been opening my brain and studying it when I'm not looking?
That is my EXACT strategy from top to bottom!Great game in my opinion, all in how you play it.I'm with you here too. T.C. for the Lynx is NOT a great conversion from the arcade original. But I do think it's fun.
Hard Drivin...now, that is neither a great conversion nor fun.

...with the invincibility code.
Lol, I wasn't expecting that. But I have to admit that's the only way I play SB2 or Power Factor. I love games that let YOU decide when to stop, not just when you lose your three lives or whatever.
Anyways, "congratulations"! hehe
-
Holy awesome! What a sweet find at a game dealer, with a great pack-in game as well. Enjoy, and welcome. And do continue to share your latest Lynx adventures.

-
I wouldn't call this a legitimate score, but one time my ex-roommate triggered a bug in the program, sending the ball into an infinite loop between two bumpers. He left the game on overnight while he slept. I can't remember the score but I think it was over 150 million.

-
LOL!
But then there will be a world obesity problem...then what??
-
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the tried & true way of simply blowing on the contacts. Worked nearly every time for me.

Poor Pocahontas, after rescuing John Smith and the cute little raccoon, and singing about the colors of the wind, she gets this....
Someone should make a G-rated hack where the characters are clothed, all the arrows are wild berry sprinkles and pieces of blue corn, and the "goal" is to give Pocahontas a hug.
Impressive record though.
-
Oh wait, I forgot, you do have to shoot things on the 2nd level if you don't use the D-pad...I seem to remember that if you don't do anything, you'll end up just short of the finish line. Which would STILL be farther than I got. You're right, I am really bad.

<off-topic>
To insert a tidbit on my favorite game show, not moving was also the trick to winning on Tunnel Hunt (an eerily similar-looking game, though much older) on Starcade. You had to score 3,808 in 30 seconds, and you could usually do it just by firing at the right time. If you moved the joystick at all, it was pretty much impossible to beat the score. Really mean.
Another near no-mover: on the light cycles on the fourth level of the arcade game Tron, hold the joystick to the left, no trigger, and the enemy cycles will self-destruct.
-
Congratulations, that is quite a collection! I think you have just about all the currently "cheap" titles ($5-$10) that I can think of, plus a few pricier ones as well. The only other ones I can think of that are often snaggable for about $10 are Stun Runner, Power Factor, and Gordo 106.
I don't do much Ebaying so I can't comment on the used route. As far as new-in-box carts go, Lemmings is definitely the golden boy; I've not seen it for less than $90 in a long time. Casino and Xenophobe rarely go for less than $40, and same with the Telegames/homebrews that others mentioned. The other Ataris generally go for $20-$30 new. So you're definitely getting into tougher territory, but who knows...you've been an awesome shopper so far!

It's funny, I have Chips and Zarlor *ONLY* for the fractal/life programs. I never play the actual games.
For you super math studs, Chips has not only a Mandelbrot explorer but also a Julia set explorer. Couldn't tell you what that means, but it may mean something to someone out there.

Yep, Gyruss is cake. As is Time Pilot...I think there should be an extra "1" in front of that score. They had a Time Pilot machine at a gaming expo last year, and I got over 16,000 in 30 sec on my first try.
