  1. As far as pronunciation goes, Spanish could be the easiest. Not many weird noises.
  2. Can one use Sys-Check with an Ultimate1Mb expansion? Are there any memory addressing conflicts? I hope not...
  3. @Gunstar Do you have a scanned manual of Neodesk 3? If so, could you share it, Please?
  4. @snicklin summed it up quite well. To me, it looks like it is M$ Basic to Atari Basic port.
  5. You could always use a Dremel tool to cut off the "ears", and to "sand" them off a little, and some solder to seal the cut sides. Done that, works well.
  6. I typed Speedscript from Compute! magazine. It tooke several days to enter all those numbers!
  7. I am not a formally trained programmer, having majored in Biology. Around 1983 at work (Natl Univ of Mexico), on my own I learned to program in BASIC PLUS 2, on a DEC PDP-11-40. The fact that there was not enough availability for me of that timesharing machine made me get my own computer, a Timex Sinclair with 16K. After much cussing due to the crappy membrane keyboard, I decided to buy an 800XL. On a trip to Washington DC, I got me a 1050 drive, and the rest is history. Later migrated to an Atari 520 ST where I was happy coding in GFA BASIC. Eventually I moved on to a Pissy machine (486) with Windoze, but that did not last long, and I installed Linux on it, and that has been my OS of choice since then. On Linux I dabbled in Perl and a little Python. Lately I returned to my happy days of early computing and got the Timex 1500 (still trying to make it work), a working 800XL with U1MB, S-drive Max, and SIDE3, and a 1040STF with GoTek floppy emulator and UltraSATAN. Pure bliss.
  8. Does anybody have the binaries for the HxCFloppy Emulator for Linux? As I try to compile it, the linker keeps complaining: "/usr/bin/ld: libcapsimage.so.2.0: error adding symbols: file in wrong format collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status make: *** [Makefile:30: hxcfloppyemulator] Error 1" That library came with the source. Not a programmer, I am at a loss here. Any help appreciated in advance!
  9. I think the poll should have been designed starting from the base models, then specifying the very diverse mods by area: RAM, video, expansion boards/carts, drives, etc.
  10. I got one of those S-video to VGA, they work well. Agreed totally on the fact that you need to make sure your svideo cable addresses the audio output separately for external speakers. That said, you may also need to upgrade the video chip, as the original one does not do good with current LCD displays: color bleeding, slightly skewed. UAV or VBXL/VBXE do the trick. I got UAV, but still need to install it (my soldering skills are null).
  11. This is sad news indeed. I bought my Ultimate 1Mb board from them about a year ago, and only yesterday ordered the Side3 cart, for my 800XL. I totally understand the reasons. At some point I had my own business too (maintenance and consulting, not fabricating), and it can be really hard in tough times.
  12. How can you tell if your monitor is made by JVC, Goldstar, or Samsung?
  13. Memory management is always tricky. Obviously, a driver/module needs to be loaded at boot time if the system needs it/uses it frequently to be able to interact with a critical device (screen, disk, keyboard, etc., agreeing with TGB1718 here). I don't think it is wise to mess with memory much (unless you are a whiz who knows exactly what you are doing), because the risk of crashes increases.
  14. In my case, with an 1040STF, the PS2 mouse adapter, a GoTek floppy emulator, and UltraSATAn. Had to replace the original floppy, which was not responding.
  15. I am at The Rock (Hill, SC), and I would attend for sure!
  16. Welp, after a nice, in depth cleaning prepping the XL for Ultimate 1Mb installation, keyboard is working great again! Also, the memory upgrade went well. Ultimate 1Mb is a must have upgrade! Now thinking of upgrading to the UAV to improve video quality.
  17. Trip to Memory lane! 1) Turbo Basic XL 2) Speedscript, then PaperClip 3) Printshop 4) Flash 5) SynCalc
  18. Hey Doug_in_NC ! I am your almost neighbor in Rock Hill, and I also got an 800XL from Ebay. The keyboard is also broken (Is that a trend with the XLs?), because only the Reset, Option, Select, Start, and Break keys work. I'd like to know if it is the actual keyboard assembly I need to replace (the mylar replacement), or if it is the Pokey chip. I am also considering getting the Ultimate 1MB upgrade, so I am curious to see it IRL...
