  1. I was born in 82 so I suppose I'm younger than the average person on this forum (just guessing) and we had two 13" B/W tvs at home. One belonged to my older brother and we would stay up late watching Quantum Leap on Wednesday nights and doing speed runs of the first level in SMB :D.

But anyway, even in the late 80s, early 90s, B/W TVs were pretty common.

Also, the B/W switch on the atari is useful for changing the color in variation 23 of Video Olympics. The normal color palette burns my retinas!

  2. Finished up another experiment. Took a old optical mouse and installed it in one of my dead Atari 2600 paddle controllers. Works quite well.

  5. In my opinion, what sets this game apart from Retro Evolved, is the absolute feeling of advancement in a game. In Retro Evolved, you just start at the beginning of a game, and build up multipliers, extra lives, better guns, etc. It gets slow at the beginning and then gets really crazy...until you die and you have to start all over again. In Galaxies, you have multiple levels, each with different enemy attacks, level designs, and medal score goals. On top of that you have different drones you choose from and level up to help you along the universe. There are more diverse goals other than just getting a high score (geoms, medals, XP points), there is more strategy (should I get the drone to collect geoms, or the drone to save my butt...or maybe a sniper drone...hmm....) and that makes for a much richer gaming experience.

I've heard people complain about a $5 dollar download being turned into a 30-40 dollar game (DS, Wii version respectively) but I feel it's definitely worth it. There is so much re-playability and the DS version is great to take on the go and play for a few minutes at a time. Rent it at least and give it a chance.

  6. Setting up new factories requires a lot of money and resources. Nintendo always strikes me as a very fiscally conservative company, so they're probably just waiting to see if demand sizzles or rises after the first year before investing in more production facilities.

And yes, the brains of the wii are faster gamecube components but you have to remember there is more technology in the wii than the CPU/GPU. There's the wifi card, the accelerometers, the IR camera, blutooth, the diskdrive, etc.

I've always believed that the shortages in supply were due to a shortage in wii-mote components, NOT the console components. But alas, people have their minds set on the gamecube x2 mentality. (OMG!!!! wii=gamecubes duct taped!!!11!! How hard is it to make it! GAWD!)

  7. I just beat the second dungeon and I have to say that this game is very well put together. The controls took me a while to get ahold of, but once you have it, it's like second nature. I second everyone's complaints about the somersaults though: the trick is to make sure that the fairy is touching the edge of the screen when you're making your little circles. Unfortunately, the calibration is off in the right and right upper side of my screen and the fairy won't go all the way to the end, making it impossible to pull off that move for me going right. I've tried re-calibrating it, but everything is still a little off.

Anyway, the graphics are amazing! The best in any DS game I've seen - it rivals Metroid Prime hunters! There are these neat little things the animators put in, like Link turning his head to look at an enemy he walks by, or footprints in the sand he walks over, the undulations in the water...it's all very pretty.

The sound is pretty good too. I recommend plugging your DS into a pair of computer speakers or a stereo system to get the full effect. You'll really hear all the subtleties the sound department put into this game.

On the flip side, this game is pretty easy. Like every single Zelda game since Ocarina of Time, everything is dumbed down and it takes no real brain power to figure out a puzzle because either the fairy or a sign tells you what to do. I long for the ridiculousness of the first 3 zeldas!

Oh and imagine this: the bosses are defeated by using the weapon you just acquired, weakening it with that said weapon and then hitting it in an exposed weak spot. Hmmm...that's original.

In any case, it's a classic zelda with a few new twists in the gameplay. It's not totally revolutionary like I was hoping, but the controls work great, the sound and graphics are awesome, and I'm having a lot of fun with this game.

And here's my friend code (fyi: it's found under File Selection->Battle->Friend Roster->My friend code)
