Hi I'd like to set Stella's zoom to 100% and have a 320 pixel wide screen on my project, is that possible?

Thanks a lot to the help of @Gustavo Pezzi and @Dave C, I was able to solve problems 2 and 3. So now both sprites are reachable to the left and the right ends of the screen which is amazing to me. And also with the final version, Player0 and Player1 are both moveable with the joystick and pretty fun to play with someone to push and attack each other. I know my code is really newby quality, but I'm sharing the finished file here if someone can find it helpful. RandomEmoticons_230809.zipRandomEmoticons_230809.bin

Upcoming book on Atari 2600 programming (now available)

Thank you so much for all the advice, @Gustavo Pezzi! I realize that your lessons were the way much easier to understand with the videos, documents and samples. That means I am actually not confident that I am definitely understanding only those explanations of yours... I will try to see if I can somehow incorporate them into the code one by one, anyway. Enjoy your family time with the baby

Hello! I wrote my first assembly code and would like to share it here. The temporary name is "Random Emoticons". It's like two smiley faces bumping into walls or each other like Pong, and each time they do so, their facial expressions change and a melody from "For Elise" is played. The one would be appeared on the left in the beginning is the player 0 and the directions to move are changeable with the joypad. This is more like an interactive art piece rather than a game, so there's not set any goals to achieve. *English is not my first language, so please ignore any mistakes! A little bit more about it, it's my first code after completing the online lessons for assembly language by @Gustavo Pezzi on Udemy (PIKUMA), and I took on the challenge to see how much I could build on my own and practice. I am very happy that I have come to understand assembly eventually, so I'd like to thank Gustavo again. ***I swear this is not his ad! And his lessons, which teach us how to use debug mode with Stella, are highly recommended for beginners. About my code, I am surprised that I could achieve most of the functions I wanted to include, but there were still many difficulties, so I thought I would share it here and ask for your advice, please. Below is a list of things that I'd like to improve or implement in the future. Is it possible to make the background gradient flip up and down in the middle of the screen in the current structure, so that would look like Tron's title screen? *The gradient display is based on 8bitworkshop. How to position them when they exceed 127? The decimals turn to -128 after 127, so not sure how to handle x and y positions more than 127. How to set the left edge of the screen to 0 in the x position? Even if I set the X position to 0, the left edge of the screen has a space. Is there a solution? Is there any way to randomize the initial location of these smileys in the current structure? I studied what's LFSR, but it seems it wouldn't be the one. Is there any way to make them react only once when the fire button is pressed and then ignore them till we release the button? The only way I could've tried is to stop the whole process until the button is released, which would stop the entire process and the screen would be glitched. Is there any way to make the melody sound better? I changed the way the melody sounds to something I can understand, based on this by @SpiceWare. Is there a way to check how much memory is left? I'd like to know some examples of how to use "Stack" function. It wasn't mentioned much in Gustavo's lessons. When and how can we use it? If there are any other techniques that would help me to better optimize my code, please let me know! Arigato, Shinji RandomEmoticons_230720.bin RandomEmoticons_230720.zip

I am a novice programmer and was just recently trying to test the possibility of creating a game with GPT. So your thread is very interesting. So far I haven't found anything decent that GPT has written that I can compile. I was very excited at first because I am a newbie and what it wrote looks decent though... How does it function in your experience so far?

This is a very nice thread and I have been looking for something exactly like this. I am looking for a place where I can produce 30-50 custom 2600 boxes for my own project right now. Since this post is about 8 years old now, it looks like the link to your template is gone, but do you still accept your box-making service? Hope this finds you well.
-
Hi I am looking for someone who can make the original boxes for my project. Did you find anyone yet?
-
Wow hope this would work for me, trying this asap, thank you!!!

Thank you so much for the comment! I reviewed this but it doesn't mention about the bluetooth connection, does it?
-
@zzip@orange808 Hi let me know if you know anything please! Do you know if there's a way we can connect the bluetooth controllers to Stella installed on Raspberry Pi? I just recently got this controller and tried to connect to Stella on Raspberry Pi but won't work because the controller uses its own specific type of connection and not work like HID devices. https://atari.com/products/classic-joystick

Thank you for your comment and yes, I will take it easy! As you said I might need to change the colors of my original games, I already saw how the colors are different on my 2600 console with old RCA tv, Stella, and Javatari on iPhones. Also thanks about the idea of the foot controller and your own setting.

I appreciate your answer! I will use Stella as you recommend. Do you think I could just follow this article? https://www.engadget.com/2012-09-28-how-to-set-up-your-raspberry-pi-to-play-atari-2600-games.html

*As far as I have searched the past forums, I couldn't find it, so let me ask about the title here. I'd like to build an art piece with Atari games output on a self built LED matrix panel, by installing a 2600 emulator on a Raspberry Pi so that we can play with a Bluetooth controller. I saw some Pis with an emulator already installed on eBay and other places, but I'd like to find a best emulator and install it myself so that I could keep building my own ones. Here is a list of things I have looked into myself. RetroPie https://retropie.org.uk/ Stella https://www.engadget.com/2012-09-28-how-to-set-up-your-raspberry-pi-to-play-atari-2600-games.html PiPlay (*Stella works in it) http://piplay.org/piplay-os/ Recalbox https://www.recalbox.com/ For the Bluetooth controllers, I consider either of the following https://atari.com/products/classic-joystick https://learn.adafruit.com/atarifruit-2600-joystick *This is other thing from the title question, but if anyone is familiar with connecting to a self built LED matrix panel, I'd like to know how to output from the Raspberry Pi. The friend I am asking to build this seems very anxious to see if there will be any frame rate or time lag issues. Btw if you know the best 2600 emulator for this project, please let me know! Thank you.

@Dave C @KevKelley @ZeroPage Homebrew @Sohl I had over 100 visitors to my open studio last weekend and many enjoyed Pizza Boy within my ATARI AR project. I started the project earlier this year and thanks to the support of everyone in this community I was able to make it happen. You can watch a video of people in my studio playing Pizza Boy in AR with the camera on my painting at following link, so please take a look. The experience of pointing the camera at the painting and having the game screen pop up in the virtual space of AR was very new and everyone was very surprised. https://www.instagram.com/p/CitIACoM4ml/ I would like to hold a group exhibition of games created by this community in the near future. We will display paintings based on your games and invite people to play them on my ATARI AR. If anyone is interested in participating, please contact me All my best, Shinji

This is amazing! I'd like to study how you make your animations. Is it possible for you to share .bas files with me?
-
Thank you for always featuring us on your thread, James! I'd like to keep the game simple because the AR system is designed so that the camera must always be pointed at the marker or the screen will disappear and the game will be reset. But thank you for the great fun idea. The Atari AR I am working on is almost complete and works as shown in this video. https://www.instagram.com/p/CgNmGczg8yb/

I was just told by others that there are not only two, but C++ as well. Please don't make me confused further...lol Btw thank you for the info!
-
That sounds good that batari Basic still could make unique looking games like them. Anyway again I'm too new to this kinds and just try batari Batari for now. Thank you again.
-
Thanks for the comment! It's very clear now. I'm really new to this, so, for now, I'll give batari basic a shot! Btw, I asked one person before you as well, what do you think is the ratio of people use those two and C++ this community? Just a simple interest.
-
Haha didn't know that and thank you!
-
If I understand correctly, you are saying that games that seem very unique to me, such as Fishing Derby, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, and Mangia' for example, cannot be made in batari Basic? If so, that is very sad news But thanks for your comment! It was very clear. How much of the community here do you think uses each of these?
-
Hello everyone! I am a newbie who just recently started learning batari Basic. I guess this has probably been discussed here in the past, but I couldn't find it so I decided to post this. Are there any differences in features between games written in Assembly language and batari Basic? For example, something can't be done with one or the other, or something is much easier with either one. I'm new and I don't want to try Assembly language at first, but I wanted to know if there is any difference in knowledge. Arigato, Shinji

Thanks for the comment! If I would order them in the future, it would be about 50-100 pieces prob. It's a lot of work to cut them by hand, so if possible, I'd like to find a place where I can order pre-cut with cheaper fees. I found someone on Etsy who makes and sells boxes, so I'll ask here too. https://www.etsy.com/shop/AtariGameBoxes

The original post is in 2011... but what about this? https://www.covercentury.com/index.php?p=atari2600&l=p&f=a2600_pitfall.jpg Btw anyone know a printshop can print the style of the original Atari 2600 boxes?
