  1. Windows 3.11 was great. Installing it is slightly tedious with all the disks, but it's completely straightforward. Follow the clear onscreen prompts and it just works. I still like that interface design. If it weren't for compatibility issues I would use it today.
  2. Let it be known for all time: use DOS 2.5 with Diamond. The whole thing booted faster, and the utilities disk worked in one try. I didn't do anything else differently. DOS 2.5 is the whole trick.
  3. I never got to experience 1980s computing in the first place. My experience only goes as far back as Windows 3.11, which I liked. I still miss those icons sometimes. I find it so strange that our screen resolution keeps getting higher but our icons keep getting less detailed.
  4. I'm getting closer, but no success yet. First I tried SpartaDOS, but this results in Diamond booting with no ability to move the cursor. Next I tried DOS XE, and this time Diamond greeted me with DRIVE A already on the Desktop, with my mouse working. However, I still don't understand how to install the utility disk.
  5. It was suggested to open a new thread, so here I go. Simply put, I'm trying to run Diamond GOS 3.0 with the utilities disk in Altirra 4.01. After some struggle I've gotten Altirra seemingly working, GOS boots, but when I install the utilities disk I only get this error. Current Altirra setup: Base system NTSC 130XE Additional Devices None OS Firmware Atari XL/XE OS ver.3 [29F133F7] Mounted Images Disk: Diamond GOS3 Utilities.ATR [93FCA643] Cartridge: DIAMGOS3.ROM [3671BDC5] I am brand new to this, so I don't know enough to know whether I'm making an Altirra mistake, a Diamond GOS mistake, or a general Atari computing mistake. The extent of my Atari computing experience is being fascinated by Basic Programming for the 2600 as a kid, and trying for the last few weeks to get this emulator working. I have never experienced the real hardware. I don't know whether the GOS manual left out a step that was too obvious to need explaining at the time, or if I've broken something that normally just works. Has anyone gotten this working in Altirra? Or if you've gotten it working on real hardware, is there something to the procedure that might not be obvious to a newbie who has only tried emulation? Thanks to anyone who can help. And thanks to this forum for saving GOS 3.0 from becoming lost.
  6. Hi. I am a total newbie who's been trying to get into this for a couple of weeks, and so far I am completely frustrated. What I am trying to accomplish: Add the utilities disk to Diamond GOS 3.0 within Altirra 4.01, and write myself a victory note in Diamond Write. Why I am trying to accomplish it: Because it's cool. There is something audacious about creating a GUI for an 8-bit computer just to be able to say "Look, I can click and drag too." The idea that it works at all is amazing, and I want to experience it. What I have: Altirra 4.01, the OS and BASIC ROMS from Atari.Vjetnam, and the Diamond GOS 3.0 files from this very forum. My first obstacle was that scanning the ROM folders gives Altirra a long and seemingly redundant list of firmware options. Each OS version and each BASIC revision appears multiple times. For example, XL/XE OS ver. 3 appears twice and BASIC rev. C appears three times. This is not at all intuitive to a new user trying to figure out what to pick. I tried a number of combinations that either resulted in the Altirra NoKernal ROM screen, boot errors, or Altirra crashing entirely. I finally got something working, and got as far as the Diamond GOS Desktop. Current Altirra Setup: Base system NTSC 130XE Additional Devices None OS Firmware Atari XL/XE OS ver.3 [29F133F7] Mounted Images Disk: Diamond GOS3 Utilities.ATR [93FCA643] Cartridge: DIAMGOS3.ROM [3671BDC5] This setup successfully boots Diamond GOS/DeskTop 3.0, but all I have is the trashcan. I have tried the Install Disk function in Diamond GOS' Options menu. This gives me a DRIVE A icon on the desktop. However, trying to open it just gives me a disk error. I have read the Diamond GOS manual, and it does not explain much. I'm sure there are some steps here I'm supposed to just already know, but I don't. I thought that was what the manual was for. Can someone help?
