No updates yet.  The guy responsible for Linux coding had a personal emergency and was not available for about a month.  He is back now and the game is in testing.  Shouldn't be that much longer.

Wow what a disappointment to still not have Atari 50 released on the VCS. I understand there are emergencies but the other consoles have the game.

That was also an issue at the time as everyone had 5200 games already on the 2600. I have the 5200 Pac Man game as well and its as close to the arcade port you could find during that time period. Another mis step was not making that Pac Man game the pack in game similar to what Coleco did with Donkey Kong.

Pacman was the pack in game later in 83.

I lived in New York City and have very little recollection seeing the 5200 anywhere at that time. I remember seeing 2600, Intellivision and Colecovision games all over. Then again, as I wanted a Colecovision so badly, maybe I wasnt paying attention. Today as I have the 5200 and Collectorvision Phoenix (essentially a Colecovision), I can honestly say the 5200 is a superior machine hands down. If Atari's video game and computer divisions cooperated and if this system was launched similar to the XEGS (computer/game system) with a normal controller, the 5200 could have destroyed the competition at the time. Its sad as I view this great machine as a missed opportunity for Atari.

Yeah, if you followed the gaming magazines and shopped at places like Toys R Us and Kmart, the 5200 was there.  The 5200 was only system that could compete with Coleco.  There were people that loved Donkey Kong but I was still into Pacman and Defender.  Both great systems.  Seeing Pacman and the intermissions for the first time at home was a gem.  I am a Coleco Smurf fan.

As I was 10 in 1982 I have zero memory of the 5200 existing as all of us 2600 kids were thirsting for a Colecovision at the time. In January 2022 I stumbled on a gorgeous totally refurbished 5200 at an old mom and pop TV repair store. Having both machines in my lifetime, I can honestly say the 5200 was far superior. Its such a shame it never caught on at the time.

Where did you grow up? If you followed Atari in the US, the 5200 was all over during the winter of 82.

Push and hold the controller in the direction you want to move in.  The controls threw me off at first too, but it's not like how the games were controlled back in the day.

Finally bought this game today. The ship controls are awful. I can't get the hang of it...

Yeah, the ship controls are so annoying.

Atari Inc. advertised the 5200 heavily until early 1984. Atari advertised everything heavily until then. If you were watching broadcast television in the States, you certainly could not miss Alan Alda pimping Atari computers and accessories in prime time like a pimp with a blimp.

Atari did a poor job advertising the 5200. Many commercials showed the 5200 graphics but the commercial was for the 2600. When Atari advertised for Centipede, it would show both 2600 and 5200 art for both consoles instead of an exclusive 5200 ad. 5200 Centipede was the goat in that era. They did this in virtually all magazine ads.

These commercials that did showcase the 5200 were on odd channels and very late times.

Part of the 5200 problem was Atari's dedication to the 5200. Atari could have done better.

First time would've probably been somewhere in the 1985/6 timeframe.  My software collection was fairly skimpy in 1985, but it may have been in there.  1986 was when I started going to user group meetings, so it expanded significantly after that point and there's a really good chance that that was when it made it in.

What I don't remember was if it was a Glenn crack or not.  I don't recall seeing his name displayed, but he also hid some of his credits behind CTRL-G, and I may just not have tried it on that one.

Ok, I guess it would have happened after the existence of the 5200. I was already into the 800xl in 85. Playing 5200 Qix in 83 was pretty cutting edge especially being a fan of the arcade version. I started going to 8bit user groups in the early 90s.

Without realising it, I grew up playing the 5200 version of Qix converted to the A8.

The first time I fired up A8 Qix, my immediate reaction was something along the lines of, "what the hell have I downloaded?"

How Atari could have two systems so close in architecture that software could be ported between them with minimal effort, yet still double up on development work for a single title baffles me to this day.

What year did you play 5200 Qix on 8bit? I'll admit, I had a friend that had many hacked games. Lots. I never had seen 5200 Qix in 85.

It's odd - I had a 400 in late 1982, and we only had over the air TV (with rabbit ears) so I am sure I was blasted with commercials, but I honestly do not recall any memories of the 5200.  We had a 2600 but I honestly don't recall thinking about the 5200 until I started BBSing which would have been 87.  I obviously saw all the magazine ads comparing games on different systems.  I think I realized the games were identical and never gave another thought.  Anyone else have the same experience?

These commercials were awesome.  So many great memories. I didn't see an Atari computer until late 84 and 85 when we bought our first 800xl.  Games like 5200 Centipede, Countermeasure, Space Dungeon were either different or not around for the 8bit.  5200 Qix was better than the 8bit.  I ended up using my XL for almost a decade into college.

I don't consider the 5200 a failure in the sense that it caught up to and was running neck and neck with its competitor, the Colecovision. It definitely didn't dominate its generation like the 2600, but the 2.5 or third generation featured two competing leaders (the 5200 and the Colecovision). The crash killed this entire generation. Did this make them both failures?

Spot on post.  In 82-84, the 5200 was king along with Coleco as the best consoles.  My friends that played the 5200 were amazed. 5200 had no bad games. People have forgotten Colecovision was discontinued only a year after the 5200 when computers and NES were the gaming options after the crash.

    EXCUSE ME!?

Are you currently in the process of moving that family to a new house, and is a member of that family about to give birth to another member that is going to require constant care?  You'd better, because if the two situations are not exact 1:1 analogies, then you're doing a logical fallacy there, professor.  According to you, that's how category errors work.

Also, I certainly hope you've got a score in your back pocket that's better than that sub-900 game you posted if you're going to be this fired up taking on all comers in SB.

You've gone from sizing up and degrading Ray (a person with disabilties) by saying he's got "no assets.  No savings.  I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that if he has a 401k with the Safeway, that's long since been drained...(and) his credit is shot.  Over half his income is in SSI payments, which aren't subject to garnishment, and he's already paying more on the payday loans than he would have to if he just said "adios" and let them sue him....He's (Ray) going to be working part-time at the grocery store and living in a subsidized apartment for basically the rest of his life."  Then you go on to say to Ray, "...but I do care what you do with yourself and with your money, and I genuinely do want to see you get your act together."  You're a wreck and contradict yourself.

Then you go and take jabs at my career, calling me names, mock my wife, and talk about all kinds of off tangent analogies (i.e.,Vitamin C).

You don't know me.  You don't know what I've been through.  You mocking me calling professor is funny.

I'll be the better man and congratulate you with the new baby and house. You should be thankful that you have a wife and a house where others are not as fortunate.

I'll still kick your ass in Super Breakout. 🙂

Not that this is any of your business, but my 5200 is at the bottom of a tote at the bottom of this pile of boxes.  I just bought a house a few weeks ago.  I had to pack.  I had to move. I had to hook up plumbing and unblock our sewer drain. I've got an 8-months pregnant wife who can't do anything around here and a nursery I have to set up.  I've got new furniture coming in.  I work 60 hours a week.  The 5200 is last on the list of things that are going to get done around this house.

When I have it hooked up again and I can get the time out of baby jail, I will get back in the HSC.  You can go back and look at my scores if you want; I tended to place relatively highly when I was playing.  I'm sure I've beaten your ass a time or two, for whatever that's supposed to prove.  I've got say, this is the most bizarre case of internet White Knighting I've ever seen.

Like what I said before, take care of your personal business and play the Super Breakout game.  If you can kick my ass, go for it.  You're not the only one with the busy schedule...I've got a family too.

Okay, idiot.  Ever hear of a category mistake?  That's Day One of Logic class.  Duh.  Oh, that's not what "apples and oranges" means?  Whatever, tough guy.  Let's settle this with a Nerf gun fight.  No?  What are you, chicken?

Do you come to the 5200 AA forums to troll and make personal attacks on people here?  Or are you here like the rest of us to talk about 5200 related topics?

Remind me, are you going to take this months 5200 challenge and play Super Breakout or are you going to make excuses and back out in front of all these 5200 members?

I'm in the middle of moving and my 5200 is still packed up.  You want to do this when I get it unpacked, sure why not?  I think our scores are pretty comparable when we've completed in the HSC.

Dude, whatever excuse you got, go take care of your personal business. Then play the game. I don't care about what Ray does nor do I care about how you don't like Ray. I don't wish anyone harm.

I came here to play and discuss about the 5200.  If you want to make excuses and back out of a 5200 challenge, then message me when you're ready.

Since we're going to be explaining high school logic to each other.  I could just as easily have said that putting Ray to the firing squad would stop his out of control spending.  That is just incontrovertibly true as a matter of fact.  We can point of many examples of people being executed by firing squad that are so incapacitated as to not be remotely able to do anything like take out a payday loan to buy a 7800 multicart.

It simply does not follow logically that I would also be "promoting" putting Ray to the firing squad, or saying that abusing charity to buy toys is the equivalent of a capital crime, and if you can't recognize the distinction, maybe you're the one who needs to bone up on his syllogistic reasoning.

And, again, since you don't be grasping the original point. It is insisted by cvga, and apparently you, that there is no reason to "berate" (explain to me how this term is distinct from "bully") Ray other than to be gratuitously mean to him.  This is simply not the case.  There's a perfectly logically consistent reason to do it, whether you agree with it or not.

And when we're done with that, you wanna' cut heads, axeman?  I can play "Eugene's Trick Bag".  Let's reenact Crossroads, and then we can have a hot wife contest

Since you have a hard time with understanding your illogical reason, and now you're giving an example of "putting Ray to the firing squad would stop his out of control spending,"  I'll say it it layman's terms.  You're comparing apples to oranges.

You going yellow belly on me on a 5200 forum and a current 5200 challenge? Put up or shut up, dude.  🙂
