How far can you go in 2600 Double Dragon?
stop_rebel_scum replied to jpfalcon2003's topic in Atari 2600
This game ends when I say "Fuck THIS" and consider acting out in anger but refrain from it because it's hardly a common game. What's your best technique for fighting? I find the jump kick virtually useless. The only way I can get anything done is to get to the bottom of the screen, wait for the approach, and use well-timed kicks. That uh.. kinda gets boring. I think I have beat the first act once or twice. -
Magical carts have a + number after their name, it's the amount of additional damage as well as reduction in Thac0 that the player carrying the cart can count on when fighting with it. hehe. these games never quite did dnd right and I don't think todays games do either
-
I just got this cartridge today. I was thinking it was a Crypts of Chaos cartridge +4, but I fought some goblins and I think it's only a +2. Thanks for the maps, though.

where'd you land the pepsi invaders? I see it come on ebay once in a while, so it's not exactly as rare as say true love, but it's a very awesome find. I think that's about the only really rare thing i'd want. Is it really a proto? I mean, the regular cart of that thing doesn't have a label or box or anything as it was a limited run giveaway, so the normal cart could be mistaken for a proto. I'd like to see a picture of the cart. Also, coca cola is an incredibly unethical (read: evil) organization that has routinely persecuted unionized workers in columbia, even to the point of having union leaders assasinated, once while within the actual confines of a coke bottling plant. So really, you shouldn't ever try to get a really high score in that game. EDIT: I failed to notice that other topic there. The one that explained everything.

The intv atlantis and demon attack totally ruined me for the 2600 versions, so I vote phoenix. Bosses are pretty sweet. just ask the NES
-
i have this for the NES, CV and INTV... and I was disgusted when I finally tried the 2600 version. Couldn't it have been at least a little better? Besides, I like pressure cooker... when I want my videogames to simulate an entry-level food service industry experience.

Whilst I was thinking in the shower last week, I considered the possibility that an 8-in-1 multicart loaded with hacked versions of Night Driver, bump N. jump and moon patrol interspersed with text sections like dark mage might possibly work to make something like the foolish Knight Rider project? Obviously wanting a license would be ridiculous and nobody would want this cart, as it would probably have to be expensive to make, no? The graphics could be changed to reflect the Knite Driver car, which we could call Kite. Or.. Quit. Qix? Qix. And scoring above a certain point level in a given action game section could display a code number and letter. These numbers and letters would be combined with the serial number of the cart (we would produce 2000 or 3000 of these) and entered into the last program, a hack of codebreaker that would merely exist to print some text about the end result, it's events contigent on scoring high enough in each section to get the best code number/letter. 1. text introduction - explains situation and gives basic serial number (no gameplay) 2. Night driver (Enduro?) - Qix races to the warehouse of the pirate/ninja/smugglers 3. Bump N. Jump (Spy hunter?) - Qix and Mikael fight the pirates on the highway there 4. Infiltrate (donkey kong) - mikael gets out and tries to reach the top of their warehouse 5. Kaboom! (beat em and eat em?) - mikael tries to catch the uh.. circuit boards with smuggled terrorist plans 6. Moon Patrol - discovering the existence of a huge laser, mikael races to it while fighting off the terrorist ninjas who hover above in hanggliders dropping bombs on him 7. Gangster Alley - mikael fights the ninja/mobster/mutants while the missile moves back and forth at the top of the screen, sometimes getting ready to shoot ~~OR~~ Death Star Battle, with the ships exchanged for cars to imply top-down perspective, mikael penetraes the mutant terrorist shield to attack the laser station as it's being built 8. Codebreaker (Dark mage?) - Each action section/hacked game would have 3 point levels, so when the player "Dies", letters and numbers appear next to the point total or replace it. These are written down. Combined with the serial number of the cart, they are entered into this last program and give 18 possible situations from utter failure to complete triumph.

How much will they be selling for, are they only by request or will there be enough that it'll be in the atariage store? I think I'm interested... I love the idea of the cc2 but wouldn't get one because I don't enjoy using my 78 in 26 mode for some reason.. colors... the way the carts seem to really maul the console when i stick them in there... This is off topic a bit I suppose but does the cc2 do 7800 games too?
-
hm, I've never seen one exactly like that, of course, most of those things look roughly the same. That one is pretty nice, though. I generally dislike them because they take up too much space in my room, but I can't get rid of them. At least I don't have any of those eight-game book-folding cases..
-
Ganster Alley and Planet Patrol.. have those. I wonder if there's a way I can tell without opening them? I actually like both of them as games, too. the bomber getting in your face.. hehe Also, why do some of them say spectravision and some spectravideo? I understand one was the european division of the company, but the carts aren't PAL or anything.

Someone mentioned this in another thread and I was surprised. Are they all? How can I protect mine and how long could I expect them to last, more or less?

HSC Season 3 Week 36: Montezuma's Revenge
stop_rebel_scum replied to Ze_ro's topic in 2600 High Score Club
here's my much better.. 539,800. I got a little bored and became reckless but it seemed possible to keep going to 999,999. Maybe if I have a lot of time on my hands some day. It definitely does repeat level three on and on without variation, a bit disappointing, but I love the game anyway. oh and something weird I noticed.. if you hold the reset switch down, the skull in the first room will still roll slowly in place but won't move. -
I like the 5200 controllers when they work. Like almost everyone else, all four of mine are crap. I open them, clean them, rub the carbon, ocassionally replace a part or two, and then struggle to get them back together without breaking the flex circuit and they work for about another few months maybe before needing that again. CX-40's in the wild work perfectly about .. two thirds or three fourths of the time, I'd say? The analog control was a nice idea, but the sticks just need too much maintenance and the non-centering should have been optional rather than mandatory (I have an epyx which switches easily between centering and loose, so it's doable) As soon as I can stomach spending fifty bucks for something I don't really Need, i'm getting a redemption... As for the buttons, I don't mind their position... it's not that uncomfortable to me. I can't play too much INTV because of those hard little nubs too. I'm ok with the disc for most games. I'm ambivalent about coleco controllers. I dislike the cv joy"stick" more than the side buttons, anyway. The super action controllers are great and also kinda "cute", so I prefer those. I Also don't mind the pro-lines so much.. they seem to fail more than the CX-40's in general.. maybe because they're engineered upside-down inside, which was foolish.. the side buttons don't bother me. Maybe because my 2600 stick o' choice is the 500XJ?

HSC Season 3 Week 36: Montezuma's Revenge
stop_rebel_scum replied to Ze_ro's topic in 2600 High Score Club
Here's mine, 87,600... I can do way better though If you're holding four items, you can't pick up any other items, INCLUDING gems. This can be frustrating. One way to get rid of the extra item is to use swords rather than hoard them... if you win a level and still have a sword, that's points you could have got by killing something. I don't enjoy the routes used on the maps posted on AA, but the maps are great for knowing what sword-vulnerable enemies are ahead so you can plan to kill the one that's the most dangeous. Another thing to watch out for: if there are two bouncing skulls, the sword will only kill one of them. This means either don't use swords on them, or aim for the second one rather than killing the first and having the second grab you. If you're coming from the room above the skull room on a ladder, you can just hold down and avoid them completely. Don't bother jumping skulls or spiders if a ladder is available to hide on so they can just pass. One thing I like about this game is that it's not timed, so you can stop and plan a jump or move for a long time. Also the controls are very tight, which I enjoy. You can make Joe turn left or right without moving a step, but it's hard because he's so jumpy. The 5200 version is wonderful, with so much more to explore, though. I can't make it too far with my 5200 controllers the way they are. Spiders can also climb ladders in that one, yeesh! Anyone know how the C64 version compares? -
Categorizing 2600 Play Mechanics: Movement Basics
stop_rebel_scum replied to NovaXpress's topic in Atari 2600
This is interesting, but perhaps ultimately impossible? Another post in which this came up mentioned miner 2049'er as 'terrain capture' or something similar because of the way sections are captured, like in amidar.. but I would agree that point of view is probably a better way to categorize games in general; thus I think miner 2049 is better of as 'platformer'. The same could be said of qbert (which doesn't seem like a much of a platform game, but probably has more actual platforms than donkey kong) Your first person maze games would of course be a mixed category, like skeleton, crypts of chaos, etc. Is skeleton the only good game like this? I've never played the starpath/arcadia stuff. I think a lot of our difficulties come from the legacy left by specific games (pac-maze, mario-platform). Nova, it's interesting that you note first and third person as absolutes because those are obviously the most common literary points of view too.. I wonder if there's any connection? -
2600's are rare? Ebay here I come! I have a 7800 for the same reason I have a 5200... because it's there, and because I can play some atari games on it that I can't play on the 2600. As noted, the best of these games are indeed midnight mutants, tower toppler, choplifter, ninja golf, meltdown, crossbow and alien brigade. There are a few others that are pretty good as well, but I must admit this is a small library of 'must-have's' for any system. Three of those games are light gun games, which many gamers play a few times and never touch or don't bother to pick up in the first place. The other games are great but have an issue or two each. The absolute worst 7800 games like hat trick, karateka, etc are pretty bad and there are too many simulations like tomcat and super huey. The arcade conversions are not That much better than the 2600 in any area except graphics and sometimes aren't even that much better looking. It's also saddled with poor joysticks, a bad console design (I don't like the loose/breakable buttons or the lack of a spring or sliding slot cover) and I think it's prone to failure, as i've seen more DOA 78's than 26's in my life. All this said.. So what. I love the 7800. It's fun and I have to own a copy because I collect atari games and if I didn't have one, it'd haunt me. If we're going to crack on atari systems, we may as well attack ol' stella herself... they didn't make it the most powerful and versatile system they could have when it was first produced and the initial run of games were pretty poor... and we all know how much we all love the 2600 now. Which reminds me.. I have a 7800 that's DOA. Anybody pay postage and trade me a 2600 cart or somethin for it? I also have a doa SMS. Anybody like DOA? "Hardcore 81" was pretty good and they're actually still a decent band. I Prefer DRI myself, but only while DWI.

This is somewhat silly, because it's so subjective and has been a contentious debate for thirty years, but here are your likely replies... Kaboom, river raid, pitfall, adventure, yar's revenge.. of course, this sidesteps games that weren't as famous but kicked far more butt, such as H.E.R.O., montezuma's revenge, solaris & gravitar, fathom, dragonstomper, etc. My favorite?.. ... .. megamania
-
I play skeet shoot more than I do Sorcerer or Star Fox.. and what about the CX26-- games like codebreaker, brain games, flag capture, basic math, basic programming and even hangman, although I enjoy that one. We can all agree on the worst NES game, though... X-men
-
Spectravision games are eproms? all of them? also, my kool-aid man died suddenly and I was wondering if that might be related, if it was eprom or not

If "Pitfall 3" were available... what would it look like?
stop_rebel_scum replied to Propane13's topic in Atari 2600
This is awful, you're like a bunch of people on diets talking about the most moist, luscious, creamy chocolate cake you can think of.. whatever pitfall 3 would be like, I would hope it wouldn't do the checkpoint deal. I'd rather lose a life or lose the game then get hit at the last hurdle before the next checkpoint and go hovering back up the ladder for what seems like an hour; losing my peak score in the process.. -
beautiful collection. Ghostbusters 2? what?
-
I live in the northeast, and pretty soon, wee peepers will be peepin' away! they're just about an inch long fully grown and much much smaller when in development. They're also way cute. I admit one could fit on a lilypad. I am in error! but Wanna Fight? COME ON! PS I love frogger. I'm sure most people have seen the seinfeld episode where george is seen from an aerial view making his way through traffic with his modified frogger cabinet. The only moment from seinfeld I thought was truly funny.
-
well.. uh.. scratch the two I need, I just caved in and ebayed them (atypical of me). I only have two blue labels though, so there I go, I guess. Kung fu master is indeed great. What's the best way to beat the bosses? I lose to them a lot. Pressure cooker is a great game. It's training me to work in food service! And I suppose after I have cosmic commuter, I'll make a decent cabbie too.. Oh and what's this Zenji deal I have a 5200 but I am quite wary of it. I dream about it developing teeth in the storage bay doors and swallowing my wallet.

I'm well aware of the original arcade graphics, as well as the better ones in the Official frogger and even knockoff pc games. I'm aware of what the manual says and even the physical impossibility of such a thin, weakly-stemmed water plant of supporting even a small frog.. But they've always been lilypads to me! You can't take that away! EVER! *watches lilypads get up and walk out of pond* also.. I'm thinking of analyzing Threedeep! but uh.. I sure can't make any sense of it. I think he goes to heaven in the end, but it took me a while to figure out the mother duck took you there. I figured she would just eat ya for daring to go near her or for stepping on her kids.
