as a long time classic game fan I have a question. Why don't we have a flashback style machine that comes with homebrew games built in? it's my understanding that the FB2 is basically identical to the original 2600 (or at least close). I'm sure patents, etc. on the 2600 have expired since it was prior to the NES and NES clones are available cheap. It seems like someone should be able to produce a small, functioning copy of the 2600. slap a chip with as many homebrew games as we can find (getting proper permissions of course), add an sd slot and, of course, a real cart slot and presto, an awesome 2600 clone. Maybe the market can't support something like this as far as getting it into Wal Mart but I am pretty sure the fan base would have great interest. I know I would. It seems like all the major engineering work has been done (FB2) to make this happen. Frankly, some of the fan based devices that have been created over the years like cuttle carts, and controller interfaces, etc. make it seem to me like all of this should not only be possible, but not that difficult using mostly existing parts. (By that I mean not that difficult for the guys that do this kind of stuff cause it is all far beyond me.) the only stumbling block I see is financing a project like thils. If any of you engineer types with knowledge of such things could chime in and give a realistic cost to get something like this off the ground I would love to hear your thoughts. I guess all things considered, it might as well be 7800 compatible too. If any homebrew authors want to chime in about whether or not you would have interest in allowing your game(s) to be included in something like this.( I'm not suggesting you give up any rights and if a product were developed perhaps, like to be sold in the AA store, I'm sure some small royalty could be paid, etc.

There is quite a long thread regarding an Atari 2600 clone been crowded funded and imho I think it would need some form of harmony support. At the moment the Flashback 2/2+ which contain the 2600 on a chip and for that matter a lot of the FPGA clones out there don't emulate "illegal instructions" that are used particularly with many new homebrews. Would it be possible to have a modified version of the Harmony software that emulates the missing illegal instructions? Alternatively how hard would it be to modify the flashback 2 core to give full compatibility? Finally is the "Flashback" name tied to the current owners of Atari?

Hiyas all! Not all to long ago I picked up a modded Atari Flashback 2 from an AA member (Crazyclimber). Everything works great and all but I am not a fan of the flashback cosmetics. Recently I set to work to separate everything from the ugly shell. I am actually going to use a old wood cigar box as the base for the new shell and I want to add a single LED for turning the power on. I don't know a lot about electronics but I want to start trying some simple stuff. Here is some pictures so far. If you can give me any insight to a electronics nub i would be grateful. Cheers!

I described my mental invention to bot Atari and Sega. Both of them said if I can build it, and I'm giving them a percentage of sales, they will allow authorized Atari and Sega systems respectively using this technology. But they will not fund the $17,000 research needed to build a prototype. Intellivision Prductions said ater Dr. King day 2013, Keith, the head of Intellivision will discuss using Intellivision's classic gaming reputation to head a kickstarter project to raise the money to fund the building of the prototype. The basic idea is running an old ROM not intended to run online, and make them run online without programming individual online code for individual games. This can work with ANY 2600 game, not just Atari Games, but third party games too. And because this is not individually done at the game, it might respark inerest in third party games. The only requirement is that each parson has a separate joystick (which may cause a problem for the 2600 paddle games, but I can fix that) and can play multi-player local (sorry Alien Front Online and Outtrigger beyond 4 players or without splitscreen, at least for this solution) on one screen (sorry PS1 system link games) I can offer one "premium" for the backers in Kickstarter fundraiser project, a vote on what system other than the Intellivision will be made first. The only ones I can guarantee are Atari and Sega systems. Nintendo said though they can't guarantee the approval of the concept, they won't review it until a prototype comes in. I don't know what Sony and Microsot think, and there are a few other system making independents like Bally(Astrocade) , Coleco (Colecovision), Magnavox(Odyssey 2 and CD-i), SNK (Neo Geo), Konami (the modern owners of the TG16) 3DO, Emerson (Arcadia 2001), Vectrex, RCA (Studio II), and Fairchild (Channel F). Nothing will get 50%+1 vote at first ballot. All Atari owner will probably pool their votes for the 2600, Sega would be a tougher one to call because Europe would be for the Master System, the US would be for Genesis, (possibly Dreamcast), and Japan would be for the Saturn. If Nintendo sent a different message, the NES wold be up there but how many people would vote or a system that might not be. I cannot specifics discuss with the general public watt he secret is to getting this work because this cold be patentable. But if someone/pool of people made my paypal account $17,000 richer, I can afford to get the prototype made. The company who can make it is Davison, an idea realization company. They quoted me a price of $17000 at the most after discussing specifics, and all they want is 10%+research money. They said if it runs over, they'll fund the rest. If those people at Atari and/or Sega are wiling to either use their name for a kickstarter project, or even fund it themselves, let them speak. Otherwise, hopefully by Dr. King Day 2013, Intellivision will put their name on a Kickstarter project and I'll link it here. Otherwise, I just wan to see the pre-Kickstarter-announcement buzz on this concept. So, any game from the 2600 to Jaguar and from the SG-1000 to Dreamcast being turned online... what do you think of the concept?

Hello! I am planning on getting an Atari Flashback, and decided to come here for some advice. I want to get one to play some classic atari games on my TV until I am able to afford a real 7800 and a lot of games. After that, I plan to use the Flashback in a project similar to the video below: A minturized arcade cabinet, made to look like a PONG, with the flashback inside. As such, I'm having a little trouble deciding which Flashback to look for. I know that the original mod, the FB1 is not the best choice, as the emulation of the games is off. So that leaves 3 choices, a FB2, FB2+ and FB3. The FB3 has more games built in and is a newer model, but is also more expensivie. The FB2 has more arcade style games, which would go well with the mini arcade project. But there is two models of it, with different games. I would like to know which of the three choices you would reccomend, considering my plans for the systems, and for what reasons you suggested it. Thanks in advance! Here's the video. I want to build something like this, but with which every atari flashback I choose instead of a pac-man. I plan to make it look like a PONG with simple wooden sides and a yellow front: (http://youtu.be/j7QE8zUbXfc)

I have a thread on this in the Flashback forums that is ongoing - I'm talking to myself in there. . . . Over here I wanted to find out if anyone could point me in a direction for troubleshooting a jumbled screen like this: http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?app=core&module=attach§ion=attach&attach_rel_module=post&attach_id=224321 My flashback has a cart mod installed that has never worked. The picture is of the flashback menu which did work before I started the mod. Switched to the cart, the screen is also similarly jumbled, but with different colors. I can take a pic of that if someone is interested. What do you think could cause a display like the one in the picture? I'll say that while doing the mod, the AV wires became disconnected from their "sub board." This was annoying because while they were partially connected I was testing the display thinking that my work was bad. Anyway, I stripped and resoldered the AV wires to this "sub board" but when I test the connections from the tips of the AV cable that plugs into the TV to the end connection on the bard I get something like 2 ohm resistance. That is still really low, but I'm wondering if it could be causing my problem. When I test a regular set of RCA cables not associated with this mod at all there is less than 1 ohm resistance from end to end. I don't think that I've damaged the onboard ROM, that seems unlikely, but I guess its possible. I would think that if I Damaged the "Michelle" chip, I would get nothing at all. Also, both of these chips are sealed under high grade epoxy (er something). I think there must be an explanation to whats happened here that I should be able to figure out. I just was wondering if you could point me in any directions to begin testing resistors or power or something else specific that you think could jumble things up like that. If I can't figure anything else out, my next step is to completely remove all my connections for the cart mod and test again. Basic t'shooting to just undo what I did and go back to the last state I tested successfully.
