Here is a hack of Galaga to make the player's ship a little more like the arcade; or rather an alternate interpretation. While I was at it, I changed some of the colors and tweaked a few other sprites as well. List of changes: New player ship sprite & colors Player & enemy missiles now like the arcade in both shape and colors Tractor beam curved a bit and color tweaked Score font like arcade, but other fonts left alone Various color tweaks, such as title screen logo Galaga (Ship Edit).a78 Galaga (Ship Edit).bin Here's a 300dpi color label:

2019-Aug-3: Version 2 of the demo ROMs (NTSC and PAL60) have been added to this post. Version 1 demo ROMs can be found in this post. Hello all! Yesterday, the Champ Games 'secret project' was revealed live on Zero Page Homebrew's Twitch stream: Galaga for the Atari 2600! This game was developed over the last 6 weeks by Nathan Strum (graphics, game design), Ross Keenum (music and sound) and myself (design and programming). It is about 90% complete with just a few bugs to be fixed and bells & whistles to be added. Here are a few pics of the game in action: Game features: 1 or 2 players (alternating) with plans to add in a 2 player co-op mode NOVICE, STANDARD and ADVANCED skill levels a special CHALLENGE game mode where you compete with only CHALLENGE stages all enemies from the arcade included (thanks Nathan!) all music and sound from the arcade included (thanks Ross!) High scores for all game modes; will support save to Atarivox/Savekey Will support Nathan Tolbert's multi-tap (QuadTari) for 2 player with Atarivox/Savekey A/B switch to enable/disable auto-fire (A = no auto-fire aka like the arcade; B = auto-fire with button held down) Pause game via Color/BW / Pause (7800) switch Technical details: the game uses the new CDFJ driver (Stella 6.1 or better) and runs on both the Harmony & Harmony Encore. It also runs on the latest community build of Stella on the Retron 77 (thanks Nathan for the confirmation!) A video of the reveal and the game in action can be viewed on ZPH's Twitch stream archive (link above). We are planning on releasing a playable demo ROM sometime in the near future once a few bugs are fixed. A cart release has not been planned yet (I haven't talked directly to Al about it since the reveal) but I'm sure it will be available in the AA store at some point. Thanks to Nathan and Ross for all their hard work in getting this game together in such a short period of time, and special thanks to James & his team at ZPH for taking the time to debut the game on the ZPH Twitch stream. It was a lot of fun! EDIT: I just realized that the screen shots are super small (not sure why). I was trying to give Nathan a break from having to do all the work but obviously I should leave this stuff to the experts!

A MORE than decent port of one of my all-time favorite arcade games!

Has anybody tried doing the Galaga "no-fire" cheat on Legends Flashback 2019 (or 2018)? I spent 20+ minutes trying this, and the bees never ran out of missiles. I'm not sure if I just did it wrong or if the console has the fixed version of the Galaga ROM on it.

This is a small release that improves support for a few bankswitching schemes: Added support for CDFJ bankswitching type (Galaga, Wizard of War, etc). Allow the DPC+ scheme to not enable playfield 'jitter' effect for certain older DPC+ driver versions; this allows 'Epic Adventure' ROM to finally work in Stella. Note that this release is based on code older than the recent 6.1 betas. Many bugfixes and new features have been done for 6.1, but none of these are included here. This is simply version 6.0 with the above two changes back-ported from 6.1. i am currently on the never-ending quest to play galaga '88 on the go. so far, MAME4droid is useless on my device (android 4.0.4 on samsung galaxy s 2), and my choices are limited. so i am willing to use other options to play the arcade version of galaga '88 on the go. are there any options on how to do this? (please help me. i'm desperate.)

A lot of people feel that Galaxian was rendered completely obsolete by Galaga. Why play Galaxian when you can play Galaga? It has so many more features, so much more action, it's so much faster paced, the enemies come in so many different patterns. Personally I disagree that Galaxian was rendered obsolete by Galaga. Galaxian is a slower game and you can only have one missile on the screen at a time, but this makes accuracy an imperative and accurately timing your shots is a much bigger deal than in Galaga. I get different things out of both games and enjoy them both. I do understand how most people might prefer Galaga though. It's just so much more fast paced. It's Galaxian on steroids. Galaxian with fuel injection. But ok, if your average person thinks Galaga rendered Galaxian obsolete, then how come Gaplus hasn't rendered Galaga obsolete? I can predict some of the answers. "Well, Galaga came out in 1981, and for 1981 it was groundbreaking. Gaplus came out in 1984, and for 1984 it wasn't groundbreaking, so it never caught on." To me this explains why Gaplus wasn't a huge hit back in the day. The arcades had moved away from the classic fixed shooters to more exciting pastures. But these days people are playing these arcade games at barcades, on Namco Museum game collections on various consoles, or on MAME. I get that many people grew up with Galaga and are going to be nostalgic for it and prefer it on principle. But it seems like a lot of people who didn't grow up with any of these games still only talk about Galaga. If nostalgia isn't what's going on, then what is? Gaplus has a lot more going on than Galaga, as evidenced by this flyer. Unless I'm missing something, Gaplus exceeds Galaga by every metric. So what's the deal? I will say that Gaplus can be cryptic... In Galaga it's pretty straightforward how to get the double-ship. You allow yourself to be captured, sacrifice a life, then retrieve the stolen ship. Not too complicated. In Gaplus you can get the "Hypership", the upside down U shaped ship seen on the title screen, allegedly by shooting the shooting star (literally a yellow star that appears and shoots at you) multiple times. However, I've tried this again and again and again, and every time the shooting star simply disappears after a number of shots. I've managed to shoot it 5 times or so and I never got the Hypership. Apparently there is a way to cheat. "At the start of the first stage, the player must move the ship up the screen until it stops and just let it sit there without shooting anything until all forty-three of the aliens have taken their place in the formation. After the shooting star appears, the player must shoot the second Zako from the left in the bottom row of the formation without hitting any other enemies. A Rally-X Special Flag will then appear, and when the King flies down, the player must crash into him (but not the "blaster head" that he is yielding) and your regular ship will turn into a "Hypership" that can fire three shots on the screen at a time instead of just two. However, if you fail to do this correctly, you will not have any other chances to do this in the game. Firing enough shots on the shooting star that appears if you don't shoot any enemies on the first stage is rumored to also grant the hypership." This does indeed work. But it seems like a cheap trick. So far that's my only complaint with Gaplus. The title screen teases that you can get this cool mysterious ship, but I can't imagine ever figuring out how to get it if I couldn't look it up. It doesn't seem like something someone could ever stumble upon. Most websites simply say that shooting the shooting star can grant the Hypership, but if that's true, I can't figure out how to do it. Pardon the long post. Too long didn't read: 1.) Why isn't Gaplus more popular? Why does Gaplus seem to be the black sheep of the Galaxian/Galaga/Gaplus trilogy? 2.) How the heck are you actually supposed to get the Hypership?

While I do know Sega did a somewhat average port of Galaga for its SG1000 console (under the name Sega-Galaga), as well as the MSX version and CollectorVision's homebrew, I cannot help but wonder how the programmers at AtariSoft might have been able to do the game justice for the ColecoVision. Furthermore, wouldn't AtariSoft's programming team have learned from the Sega and MSX versions? The omission of the Challenge Stages is the only reason I dislike the SG1000 port. I'd bet that as a 32 KB cart, at least some if not all the Challenge Stages could be added (since Sega's port only had an 8 KB ROM size). ~Ben

I stuck out a couple tentacles elsewhere to try to get a bit of a hand because I'm not good at getting projects off the ground (though, once they get airborne, they usually stay there). I was asked to try sticking out a tentacle here too, though I felt it was a bit premature. I got to thinking, of all the games I'd like to see on the Apple and haven't seen yet, what is the one that would be easiest to port?, and decided it would be Galaga. I might need a hand getting started, though if it gets to a certain point, the work to that point, plus the sources for the arcade or 7800 version, may be enough to get it the rest of the way.

Any hope of porting a MSX version of Galaga in the future to run using the SGM? My immediate thread search could not find this mentioned. Has there been mention of it? I'd sure like to fire it up after a long play of Galaxian. The MSX version gameplay looked faithful and slightly better than the 7800. -
