zombiecraig
I was reading an article on Super Mario Land in one of the recent issues of Retro Gamer. In the opinion of the writer of the article, not many games for the original monochrome Game Boy are really considered to be classic, must-have games. I was just curious what some of you thought. I, for one, rather enjoy Super Mario Land. I think it is a unique and enjoyable entry into the Mario series. So for me, that is a classic, must-own GB game. Though when I try to think of others, I can't seem to come up with many. Let's say you had a top ten, what would they be? Include Game Boy Color, if you must, but not GBA. Any ideas? Link's Awakening, I'm sure.
raindog151
Well, Tetris and the first two FF games were quite good. Pokemon could be argued, I'm not a fan myself. I always had a great deal of fondness for Gargoyle's Quest.

Video
Well, of course, Mario Land one and two, and all 3 Wario land games were all must haves. Zelda Links Awakening, And both Oricle games are must haves as well. GameBoy IMO has the best version of Tetris there is to have. It's also got a great Faceball 2k game, that was really nice. TMNT back from the sewers was awesome (though it is a little slow by todays standards) There are a bunch of Classic Arcade games on here, Centapede, millipede, missile command, asteroids, battlezone, etc. All great. And all the puzzle games, Yoshi, Yoshi's cookie, Mario Picross, Dr Mario, all great. There are really to many games to just name ten, so I'll leave you with that short short list up there. Of course, what's classic to you will depend a lot on what types of games you liked.

rockman_x_2002
To be sure, the Super Mario Land games (and their spinoffs, the Warioland series), Tetris, Dr. Mario, the FF games, and all the others mentioned are classics. However, I am surprised that no one has yet mentioned the original Kirby's Dreamland, or F-1 Race (crappy racing game by today's standards, sure... but back then it wasn't half bad to me). figgler
Kirby's Dreamland, I beat that game the first time I ever played it There have been a lot of games mentioned here that I love - Gargoyle's Quest stands out for me because it is one of the few truly great GB games that is not a sequel/spinoff to a console series. The bulk of great GB games are infact the little brothers of NES or other console games. Still they are awesome in their own right. There are 2 each of Adventure Island and Bonk games for GB that are all really good. And has anyone mentioned Metroid 2 yet or Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters? Holy shit those games are awesome. There's the Donkey Kong Land games, which are okay, Wario Blast and a few other Bomberman games I like (Pocket BM in particular). Right now I'm playing Duck Tales a fair bit and it's good too. It comes from the days when GB games were just scaled down NES games (not even original sequels) but that makes it quite good in my eyes. Oh, and Kid Dracula is one of the very best platformers I've ever played Edited January 31, 2007 by figgler

Um... Gargoyle's Quest is a spinoff from Ghost 'n Goblins... I agree with everything else you said. About Kirby's DreamLand, I feel it's far too easy. I liked the sequel (Dream Land 2) much more. And how could I have forgetten about Duck Tales!! Shame on me!

Gargoyles Quest is a spin off from Ghosts N Goblins, but only in the sense that it takes a character from it - it plays absolutely nothing like GnG, and if nobody told you, you wouldn't know. Duck Tales is formulaic gaming at its very best. Great graphics, tunes, and nice level design. I always loved this one Dr Mario and Qix are pretty good too, and Tetris is the best GB game ever. Wasn't Super Mario Land II a bit too easy? Edited January 31, 2007 by Spector

Um... Gargoyle's Quest is a spinoff from Ghost 'n Goblins... I agree with everything else you said. Yeah I know. But as stated above, it's really only Firebrand and if I remember the final boss from GnG is the main bad guy in Gargoyle's Quest. But yeah, they aren't really related and I totally applaud Capcom for going in a totally different direction here, when they could have easily just made a regular GnG game like so many other GB game creators did
Video
Wasn't Super Mario Land II a bit too easy? In my opinion yes, and it's chugtasticly slow. But at the time I thought it was cool that they could do 'super nintendo graphics' on the DMG. Oh yeah, you have to get DK 94 and especially the Super GameBoy for it. Space Invaders was great, and Qix was a lot of fun. I fogot about F1 Race, a lot of people I know hated it, but I liked it, reminded me of Pole Position. For that matter, Top Gear was good too. zombiecraig
Well, I'm not really looking for recommendations, necessarily. Though there are some games that were mentioned that I have not played that I certainly need to try. What I'm looking for with this topic are opinions of which Game Boy games should be in every gamers library. Like for the NES, you might say that Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, etc. are must own games. And while I like an NES game like The Karate Kid, there's no way in hell I am ever going to consider that a must-have, must-own NES title that should be in everyone's collection of games. I do think there are some games mentioned above that fall into this category. Donkey Kong 1994 is definitely a must-have. As-is Tetris. Gargoyle's Quest is a game I need to check-out apparently. But other games like the classic arcade ports? I mean the games are good, sure, but they've definitely been done better elsewhere. Like the original arcade versions. shadow460
D' oh! How could I have forgot Qix!? Especially since the arcade cab doesn't fit into my back pocket? I thought of F1 Race, too, since it was one of the first four player linked games. In the end, thought, Super RC Pro Am outshines F1 Race by a lot. I think the Game Boy was better suited to cart racing than "3D" racing. Oh, another one: Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. I say that because its one of the few Game Boy titles that uses actual polygons. Edited February 1, 2007 by shadow460
figgler
What I'm looking for with this topic are opinions of which Game Boy games should be in every gamers library. I don't know. I mean I don't really buy into this theory very much. The games that ought to be in everyone's library are the ones they like. There is no universal list for any system of 'games you must own'. Even for NES there are going to be people who just don't like platformers, so there isn't much reason for them to be seeking out all Mario games for example. I guess what you and the rest of us here could do is take the recommendations here and throw together a list of what games should be in 'my collection specifcally'

Vic George 2K3
Quarth is my all-time Gameboy classic favorite. Would like to see this game remade (if not updated) for the Gameboy Advance and/or Nintendo DS.

I guess what you and the rest of us here could do is take the recommendations here and throw together a list of what games should be in 'my collection specifcally' Okay, I can certainly understand that argument. For example, I'm sure a lot of people consider at least one of the GTA games to be a must-own title. However, I do not own any of the GTA games and most likely will not. They just do not appeal to me. Although I can understand why people do enjoy them and I am impressed with certain aspects of the game design, they just hold no lasting appeal that makes me want to own them and replay them. So, I'm pretty much back to where this started. It's just a matter of opinion and a basis for debate and discussion. There certainly is no list of games that every game collector must have. Of course it is going to vary by the individual's opinion. While I may enjoy Super Mario Land for the fact that I feel it is a unique and unusual entry into the Mario series, someone else may despise it for the same reason. I'm just curious as to what other's opinions may be.
figgler
There is definitely a wide consensus throughout though. No one would tell you Tetris isn't worth having, or Mario Land or DK94. You know what would be interesting? Seeing a table of actual sales numbers of every GB game. The top 10 would be a good indication of 'must owns'. shadow460
I don't like Tetris much, but I'd never get rid of it. It's one of those games that just hits the spot sometimes. Definitely a keeper.

DK94 isn't worth having if you liked playing the original Donkey Kong and would rather play that than a combination platform-puzzle game like DK94. Guess I must be "no one". But original DK isn't available for GB. I wasn't thinking so much about what one would rather play, but for GameBoy, this is one of the best games out there and there aren't very many other viable DK options
